Because it was still a coming of age story, only instead of growing up through the loss of her parents she is choosing instead to save her father's life by potentially sacrificing her own. So we still see a person we want to be like (someone willing to give their life for that of our relative's) without the parent death to get her there. Also she still gets isolated from her family and can be seen as 'dishonorable' for being unsuitable for marriage

Related to Him Hawkins from Treasure Planet. Them parental abandonment feels, man. Just his entire rebellious attitude from being a kid of divorce, watching his single mother work herself ragged, but also not having a constructive way to vent frustrations. Jim was actually kinda a genius for the solar surfers he built and the way he understood the map. Remember how he built a surfer in like five seconds? Or how when he finally had a father figure that encouraged him, he flourished? Jim's entire story was so good and hit home so hard. I need to rewatch that movie.

Yeah! He's an inspiration to us all. If you want to make a story more lighthearted, don't let the parents live! It would ruin everything. Just ad animals with weird names and change the ending to a kiss so that the main character won't die. Works for Ariel, too.

When my family adopted my 7yr old brother from China (Mulan is his favorite movie btw), I noticed the lack of Disney movies with happy adoptive families. There is Meet the Robinsons and... that's it. The orphans either go back to find their birth parents or people group (repunzel, jungle book) or their parent(s) just die. It would be nice to see some more pro-adoption Disney movies in the future.

It's not Disney, BUT the lego Batman movie was very pro-adoption. It showed very clearly how much Alfred was like a father to Batman and how excited Robin was over the thought of being adopted by Batman and Bruce (he thought Batman and Bruce shared custody over him and it was cute ^^). Heck! Just the whole credit song, "Friends are family", is all about how family is shaped by those you love; not necessary by those you share blood

I'm not arguing that, the line just feeds into the theory that happy families/happy situations don't make interesting stories. (this is also something i don't believe in a 100%, but cannot deny that conflict/tragedy/a protagonist will move a story along better rather than love and acceptance.)

Why not just make interesting families? I mean, as interesting as orphan protagonists are, why not make interesting families? Think like the Incredibles: they were interesting as a unit, but also as individuals. Why not have an alchemist who found their interest with the guidance of their grandparents? A kid who became so frustrated by their parents’ divorce that they ran away from home and became a boxer? Triplets who were destined to be the chosen one and were secretly mentored by their older sister cause the parents wanted to protect them? You can have families still be interesting for a story cause guess what? Lots of kids have dysfunctional families, and feel they don’t have an outlet. Kid protagonists with dysfunctional families that not only win, but thrive by their own grit would be a great message. Just as good as a coming of age orphan story.

I'm a writer and I can honestly say that killing off parents in the beginning does allow the character to develop past that. It allows them to rise up and look all the more heroic seeing as they came from such sad origins, and the Disney character I most relate to is Belle. I've always been a bookworm
@hannahpallister50837 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, so this is a Pixar theory, but what if Bonnie is Boo's mother? Since the Monsters travel back in time to when Boo is a toddler, they could have gone to far enough after Toy Story 3 that Bonnie could grow up with Andy's toys, and pass some of them down to her daughter, Mary Gibbs. So then Bonnie must have married a man with the last name Gibbs.

You know what is interesting? Most Disney characters have dead parents or a dead parent. Or sometimes they are separated (like Aurora or Rapunzel). But the one I find most interesting is Jim Hawkins in Treasure Planet. *Spoilers if you haven't seen the movie* He lives with his single mother, but then in a music montage you see flashbacks of his childhood and see that his father just got up left left them, abandoning his wife and child.
@Kahtisemo7 жыл бұрын
I was actually just thinking this when I saw the title. And it's kind of funny, because in the book Jim's dad died of illness and he seemed very close with his father. At the same time, though, having his father walk out on them makes a lot more sense to the Treasure Planet narrative especially with it being a futuristic interpretation to connect with a modern audience. (Not to mention, it helps explain some of Jim's psychology and why he took to connecting with someone like Silver.)
@ninjalite78827 жыл бұрын
Claire Firedragon They never really revealed Jim's father. I know it focuses on Jim Hawking and his adventures but somethimy bugged me. Jim was traveling along side PIRATES he should have found his dad by now. Or DID he already? Please don't hate me for this. I just want to get this out there. What if he was working with his father all along and he just never knew it? I mean it has been 12 years since the dad left. I think we can assume he was 5 years old when the dad left. Or maybe 4. It would have been a long time since he last saw his dad. And who knows? His dad might have gotten into the pirating business. We barely know anything about him exept for him leaving his family. What if Captain Silver was his father? I mean Silver might be a menacing cyborg pirate with a tendency to betray his crew but it could be possible. I mean,it's been 12 years. A lot could happen to a man's appearance in 12 years. The first time we see the dad,his body(which is the only thing we see in the flashback)looks like the body Jim would have when hes an adult. But in 12 years of raiding and being a pirate,the mystery dad could be John Silver after years of being a pirate. And Jim wouldn't know a thing. I mean,if that's not evidence,would about Silver's attitude toward Jim? In beginning Silver was indifferent towards the kid. But when the movie progressed we get to see Silver's fatherly side. He actually seems to care for Jim's well being and actually calls him Jimbo repeatedly. Something a father might do. And when the other pirates where planning to take over the ship and they suggested killing the boy in the most gruesome way possible,Silver prevented that from happening. I never looked for clues or cared about the mystery identity of the dad the first few times I watched the movie. But the clues are there. Pointing to Silver being the father. If I'm wrong about this... Would anyone with better knowledge clarify this theory? Oh and btw,this is my first theory. Don't hate me for it.
@ClaireFiredragon7 жыл бұрын
UltimateNinja10 Its an interesting theory. If you believe it thats fine, I'm not a huge theory person. But I will say Jim was more like 7 or 8 when his dad left in the flashback. He is much older and taller than he was in the beginning of the movie.

I relate the most with Merida from Brave who ironically has both of her parents. It's because I'm a teenage girl myself and have always hated how princesses, especially Disney ones, end up with a guy at the end of their films, sometimes even from a betrothed marriage that happened to work out. Don't get me wrong, I've always been one of those girls who runs around in a tiara and wants to be a Disney princess but I haven't had my first crush, kiss, boyfriend, etc and I'm fifteen. Instead I'm much more of a nerd with a doll obsession as well as one with books. I read Harry Potter as early as first grade and quite a few times by third. But my point is I connected more with Merida because she felt real. She doesn't get any guy, just freedom. She loves her horse more than doing housework. She's adventurous and bold and doesn't listen and isn't a reactionary character like Cinderella or Snow White. And she has both of her parents. Her story is about accepting her fate but also changing it, kind of like what you hear in Captain America: Civil War. Compromise where you can, but where you can't, don't. Merdia does just this. She spends the movie getting to know her mother and changing her mind while going on an adventure that brings her mother to her world outside the castle. The reward is a change in how marriages are done and Merida and the other suitors get to choose rather than fill their parents' expectations and wishes. My parents and I all agree (and my little brother can sit through the movie unlike other princess ones so I'll give him credit too) that Merida is the easiest to understand and connect with. I'm aware people don't favor her or her movie, but I think she deserves more credit. :) ~kiki Edit: I'm very sorry this is long. As I've said in the replies, I'm a very wordy person who loves to write. I never expected people to actually read this or to reply, I was doing it more for fun than anything else. Also, I'd like to add that yes, Merida's movie is a Pixar movie, but Disney owns Pixar. She is also an official Disney princess. So, yes, she is Disney. If you want to look at produced from Disney only, my favorites for similar reasons are Tiana, Anna, Rapunzel, and Moana. And since everyone thinks this is apparently my life story, I'll add "thank you for reading my life story" but I should say "thank you for reading a giant comment about my favorite Disney princess and my argument to why she is my favorite and supporting bits about where I'm coming from. For those who think the Harry Potter bit is irrelevant, I'm just pointing out that I would prefer to read, and have for years, than go out on a date or hang out with friends, which leaves me alot of time for movies. It just helps to explain that I'm a LITTLE different than what you might think and have always had a foot in the fantasy/book/movie world.

The Small Lovable Heart Here is your flaw: Merida is a Disney princess! She did star in a Pixar film, but Pixar is owned by Disney and there is a reason people say Disney-Pixar. She has had an official ceremony to become a Disney princess. I hope this brings some clarity to why she still applies even though she is not soley Disney, she was created by a branch of Disney. ~kiki
@PinkBubbles7 жыл бұрын
1d af kermit She's my second favorite. I've recently rewatched the Princess and the Frog and she's definitely a character I can get behind, though Merida will always be my favorite. (I'm a HUGE Disney-Pixar fan and basically every branch of Disney I will love) I love that she isn't driven by romance and blindly marrying someone, but the thing that stops me a bit is that there is a part of the movie where she would choose being with Naveen as a frog that she's known for only a few days and will give up her restaurant. She can always "fight" for him once they're human again, so that will always hold me be but from a story point of view I am aware why that part was included (conflict). But regardless I do really love her ~kiki

Because he was horny. Seriously, most versions like Ever After and live action Cinderella attempt to show a mutual love between the step-mother and Cinderellas father... but it's never enough affection or time to warrant marriage. Him wanting to get laid on the other hand, is far more plausible.

I think the father didn't want to be alone. In a book called Alfie The Doorstep Cat, a woman called Claire falls in love with a man called Joe, who was sweet at first but starts turning horrible to Claire, and Alfie's reasoning for it is because he heard of humans rather wanting to be treated horribly than wanting to be alone. Btw that's not the plot of the book, I took that from the book to explain how Cinderella's father didn't notice, just as Claire in the book didn't notice.

Good video!^^ I'd like to point out that the fairytales were made in an era where death during childbirth- waaaay more common. But removing the 'guiding hand' the main character has to step up, regardless of their predicament. There is no parent or guardian to take that place, and I feel like that's part of why we encourage and root for the main char. All in all, you got the right of it, I just had to add my 2 cent.^^

what about quasimodo? his (probably adoptive) mother is killed on-screen, and his father (?) is arrested and presumably killed later. i’ve always theorized that his real parents probably abandoned him because of his deformity and he was found by the romani/gypsy woman.
@hallowenangel5 жыл бұрын
That theory does make a lot of sense since Quasi was way to pale to be a child of romani/gypsy couple we see in the begining of the movie. (unless of we consider albinoisme but i don't think Quasi had that.)

Just a quick question, but does anyone else notice the similarities between Pocahontas and Moana, you see they both have a grandmother figure that they both look up to and they both have a disagreement with their parent(s) over the same thing: FREEDOM, oh and of course they are both daughters of a chief, they both wear a necklace which is very important to them and they both are trying to find who they are by following the ocean(lake) they both have two pets Pocahontas has a raccoon and a hummingbird and Moana has a pig and a chicken they also try to find their way by using the wind, Pocahontas the black arrow and Moana the sail on her canoe and JUST LOOK AT THEM they sera look alike.
@marlayna1477 жыл бұрын
Foto Vea Maybe Pocahontas is Moana's ancestor? Or vice versa?
@LoremasterYnTaris7 жыл бұрын
Unlikely that they're related, given their geographic locations. Pacific islanders were (and some still remain) exceptionally talented ocean goers, but given that Pocahontas lived on the Atlantic Coast, the likelihood of them or their descendents being in the same area before the mid 19th century (at the very earliest) is practically zero. Interesting theory, but an improbable one.

There's also Princess Aurora who had her parents live, Mulan who had both of her parents and her grandmother, and Hercules who had both his parents and foster parents live (granted in that story it would have been difficult to off his blood family seeing as they're gods but they could have killed one of his foster parents). Angie, Well we don't want to romanticize divorce. I feel like all making a divorced couple would do is make it more normal that it should be... but that might just be me
@shuzzlinreader53397 жыл бұрын
It probably has some thing to do with the whole princess aspect. There's no such thing as divorce among royal. King Henry of England had to make a whole new religion (the church of England) just to get rid of Catherine of Argonon. If royals ever do split it's because one died (sometimes because their spouse had them murdered) or they are thrown of the country in exile (usually the woman because patriarchy)

Parent Trap was first made in the 60s. The 90s one is a remake.

Shuzzlin' reader, That's a good point. However, we can't forget the more "realistic" movies, where the main character isnt royalty. I always wondered why Disney doesnt do any stories about Princes, I've always wanted to see one of those.

Exactly. Harry's parents would never have let him wander around causing mischief, and Luke Skywalker could not have gone to save the galaxy if he'd had a single living parental figure (who wasn't, you know, the threat to the galaxy). Even Percy Jackson had to have his mom kidnapped and presumed dead to set the events in motion.

This is a Harry Potter theory. The diary in a the second Harry Potter film is destroyed by Basilisk venom. In the same movie, Harry is stabbed in the arm by a basilisk fang. If the fang destroyed the soul in the diary, shouldn't it have destroyed the soul in Harry, and if so, why are harry and Voldemort still connected? Is Harry made a horcruc twice?
@tatianahernandez28657 жыл бұрын
LolaSS S I think it's because voldemort had to kill Harry himself for the piece of his soul to be killed, as discussed in the later books
@Okay_Is_Wonderful7 жыл бұрын
LolaSS S Yes, if Harry had died in the Chamber of Secrets, so would the horcrux. Remember that the others had to be destroyed beyond magical repair. The host was restored, therefore the soul shard survived.
