Coming from a 2016 cbr600rr, (which I loved) to a 2017 959 panigale, the difference is incredible. It's noisy, feels lumpy and unrefined in traffic, but once you get it in the twisties, using the quick shifter and banging down the gears, hearing the pops and bangs from the twin Akrapovic's.... There is nothing else that comes close for excitement. I was out with a friend who has a zx10r. He was behind me, when we pulled up at some traffic lights, he just smiled and said 'wow, that thing sounds naughty' 😁😁 That put a huge grin on my face. Awesome bikes, can't imagine riding another Japanese bike again.
@JonesBrosGarage4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. The V2 is clunky at low speed, although it is very smooth in low power mode. I sometimes am just putting around and miss the smoothness of the Japanese throttles. Then I get into twisties, banging gears on the highway or I just get off my bike and stop to look at it.. And I instantly know I would never pick something else. I will most likely always own a Ducati now, even if it is beside other Japanese bikes. Ducati will always have a spot in my garage, hopefully the V4S next. Nothing else I've ridden compares 👍

Interesting points you make. While I agree with most of them, I did want to add something that I feel explains why Ducati is a more expensive brand than most using logic. I do not think it is fair to say that Yamaha (or any other brand for that matter) does not put the same amount of effort and passion into their product as Ducati does. However, I do believe Ducati is better at appealing to passionate riders. You touched on production numbers between Japanese bikes and Ducati slightly but I would like to add some more detail. The reason Yamaha (and other Japanese brands) can produce more bikes and offer a cheaper price point than most is simple. It comes down to scale. Yamaha has the ability to produce thousands of bikes because they have the infrastructure, cash flow, and negotiating power to keep costs low. They have multiple revenue streams that can help with cash flow issues that companies like Ducati used to have (pre - VW acquisition) In essence, since they can produce at larger scales, they can negotiate vendor part contracts to create advantageous pricing that other niche brands do not have. For example, Brembo might give them a brake (haha) on pricing if Yamaha promises to order 100,000,000 parts over the next 10 years. If you look at the Ducati brand post VW purchase, you will notice that their production numbers, service quality, and model lineup had grown tremendously over the years. They were able to do this with access to the deep pockets of VW. However, the production numbers are still not on par with the big Japanese brands in terms of scale, and they will never be because this brand is a very small subsidiary of a behemoth auto company. Lastly, let’s get to the pricing. It’s simple supply and demand. Ducati can afford to charge more for their product because there is less of it. Yamaha is focused more on volume than exclusivity, therefore having an abundance of supply will force them to price their bikes accordingly.
@JonesBrosGarage4 жыл бұрын
I think you're correct with Ducati not necessarily always being more passionate about their motorcycle than Yamaha in cases like the R1. However, I get the feeling when designers sit down to design a motorcycle predominantly to be used in foreign markets as a means of reliable transportation, they don't have that same excitement designers of bikes like the V4 have. I say this because all of the large manufacturers create bikes for several markets and it happens that their greatest selling bikes are very utilitarian. This isn't something you really see with Ducati. I also think there was alot more passion pre-VW obviously, as Ducatis were largely hand assembled and I definitely should have mentioned that in the video. VW coming into the equation though has allowed for more efficient production and more reliable bikes though so it's not really a drawback. With that being said, I agree with your points 👍

I owned a 2015 monster 1200. The highest prices are the desmo checkups done every 30.000 kms. Other than that, the prices will vary according to where you live, but normal checkups are similar to any other official dealers checkups. Not saying they are cheap, just saying that other dealers like honda, yamaha or kawa can also be as expensive. My current MT10 is more expensive to maintain.

I personally avoid owning them out of warranty just because the parts can be so expensive and on a bike that's already depriciated something catastrophic isn't feasible. I will say from my experience and what I've always heard, ever since Volkswagen has taken over they have made huge improvements in reliability. But for regular maintenance it is unavoidably pricey unless you do it yourself. On my bike it's about $350 every 3500 miles and $1200-1800 for the desmo valves every 15,000 miles. Between work and owning other bikes I'll probably never ever see 15,000 before I upgrade to the V4 to be honest. 👍

I've heard the paint is thin and fragile on Ducatis but mine has some of the best automotive paint I've seen to be honest. Granted the bike is still relatively new, but it looks like the day I got it. No swirl marks at all, it's completely a mirror. It also has been very resistant to chips (I've maxed the speedometer several times) and I've ridden on roads with lots of pebbles behind other bikes throwing them at me. No offense to the guy in this video, and I mean this all in good fun, but I'm gonna roast him because I disagree. Mind you, this is coming from a Ducati owner. To me, this shows the potential for a cliche to get tossed around and popularized when it really means nothing at all and is completely invented and infused into things. Ducati somehow means passion whereas Honda means utility? Who says? Panigale owners ride because of passion whereas R1 owners are lame average guys? Uh, why? Ducati is made of special material like with the shoes analogy (uh, it's metal, just like all motorcycles, so that analogy doesn't apply; Ducatis aren't "special in their very makeup") whereas other bikes are made of "normal" stuff? No. Hondas are soul-less utilitarian machines whereas a D-U-C-A-T-I represents fire and thrill? Honda CBRs, like all sport bikes, are beasts of machines. Uh, where do you get these claims? I'm pretty sure any person who has a sport bike especially says the same thing about their own bike. That's general to the motorcycle hobby, not unique to Ducati, but you infuse special significance into Ducati by wording it as exclusive. It's like begging the question. You didn't list a single stat about the bike or explain what about it merits special regard; you just claim it to be true without anything to back it up. It'd be like me comparing MotoGP riders and saying, "Valentino Rossi, yeah he rides fast and all, but Mark Marquez? That man tries to WIN. He drags knee and elbow in the corner and rides a Honda and attacks corners with a passion. When you think of Mark Marquez you think of an unchained cheetah. He even rides past 100 mph. Just... special." Again, taking general facts about ALL riders (since all riders automatically drag knee and elbow, are trying REALLY hard to win and go around corners fast) and wording it as if it's a special characteristic of the particular rider. You even said, "When you think of Ducati, you think of a V-Twin. Just, you know... really special." Uh, what? The type of engine it has is a qualitative difference, not a quantitative one that implies better or worse. I could list an arbitrary spec about my R6, saying "When you think of R6, you think of 599cc inline 4. You know, just reallIy special." It'd be different if you bragged that the Panigale puts out over 200hp or has unique additional features, which is MORE than anything else, not "different." I've heard people actually claim that they like the fact that their beloved Ducatis are unreliable because it gives them "unpredictability" and therefore "character." LOL. Because they've pre-decided that "Ducati is special" and then describe the bike from that standpoint, not the other way around. You want my opinion? I actually think reliability is an important part of a bike's "specialness" (ahem... Honda and Yamaha) because it means it was built meticulously and built "strong," and there's pride in that. Ducatis are very fast, impressive bikes by and large, but they're not all that they could or should be given what they cost. They are egregiously overrated and not worth the money new. - They've been very unreliable - Their color schemes are boring and the V4 is ugly - They aren't the winningest brand in racing - Despite being unreliable and needy of service, they're also more expensive to service - They aren't unquestionably faster or better than their competitors And... - They're double the price of their competitors. I happen to dig the looks and quality of the "boring, everyday Japanese bikes." What's the justification for spending 40 grand on a fast and unreliable motorcycle because of some unproven and blurry "Italian mystique"? You tell me.
@Navieri3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't even own a ducati but I can say for a damn fact I've never seen anyone on one, see Japanese bikes all the time and sure they are great machines, I ride an 18 cbr1000rr but it is safe to say they are common. Have yet to see a ducati which to me indicates they are rare and desirable. Take this panigale v2 compared to any 600 out there, and even some literbikes like my fireblade, the V2 gives you way more for your money, which 600 offers all the tech the v2 does? Nothing. Hell my fireblade came with the bare minimum because it is a base model, the v2 has more features than my literbike. When people say ducatis have "character" or "soul" I kinda understand what they mean, inline 4s are so boring and don't sound the best imo

@@Navieri I'm completely on point with all that you're saying. I will agree with you that... yes, Ducatis are generally very elite bikes in terms of performance. They are consistently some of the most capable motorcycles available. But a lot of Ducati glory is based on bullshit and on top of that, it really peeves me how unreliable they are. Mind you, I have a Ducati, and I absolutely love it. It was my very first bike! But could I generally justify breaking the bank, spending double the cash on a Ducati that is MAYBE better and if so, only by a little? The new V4r? Yeah, it's hot. And it's fast. It comes stock with all the goodies - the Brembo brakes, Ohlin's suspension, really nice electronics, tons of horsepower... but what of that stuff demands 40 grand? Are you telling me that an R1, a ZX10r and a CBR1000rr, let alone the new Fireblade SP, aren't very special, sickeningly fast bikes that compete with and rival that V4r? And couldn't you spend half the price on one of those and tweak it by adding Ohlin's suspension and Brembos? You still haven't proven to me this: Where does the 40 grand come from? And again, let me recite: Ducatis are also UNRELIABLE.
@Navieri3 жыл бұрын
@@NYGiantsDiEhArD the 40 grand comes from the fact its a ducati. It's the same as buying a Ferrari or Lamborghini or say like Louis Vuitton clothes, you are paying for the name and brand, that doesn't necessarily mean they are "better" than brands that aren't as expensive or sought after. As for unreliable this isn't the early 2000s anymore the reliability disparity isn't anywhere near what it was. With all due respect, I'm surprised, you own a ducati but don't understand why it carries that kind of price tag?
@NYGiantsDiEhArD3 жыл бұрын
@@Navieri Hold on. It's definitely not the same as Ferrari or Lamborghini. In car world, speed is exclusive for class for the most part. Most of the world's fast cars are elite expensive cars. So yes, Ferrari and Lamborghini get to play "special Italian car" because they define that high performance category and are "special" for that reason. If you want a fast car, it has to be an expensive car. The same isn't true in bike world. Speed is not a serious luxury on a motorcycle. The fastest superbikes are by no means the most expensive bikes in general. Harleys and other slower and much more basic bikes are more expensive. So Ducati is trying to carry over that Italian speed and luxury reputation from car world into bike world, except it isn't justified by a difference in performance. They're expensive JUST BECAUSE. Ducati compared to a Honda in bike world (on the same level) isn't the same as the difference between a Ferrari and a Honda in car world (a Ferrari is incomparable to a Honda). You literally just said it in the beginning of your comment: "You're paying for the name." And then you turn around and say, "I can't believe you as a Ducati owner don't know what you're paying for." What in a Ducati earns my payment of 40 grand? I'm being serious about that. That's double the price of an R1 or any other liter bike. And so far I've gotten blurry answers!

Sticking a M4 caliper on a 2021 bike is not really the same as sticking a Stylema or M50 caliper on it is it? Who has been using Brembo master cylinders for their sport bikes for over a decade? Ducati. How many sport bikes still come with rubber brake lines? Not Ducatis. How many bikes still come with cast wheels even on the up-spec models? Have the Japanese manufacturers figured out how to program an ABS system that's usable on a race track yet? Have all the Japanese figured out that up/down quick shifters should be standard equipment on every model? When is BMW going to figure out that the electronics shouldn't be options? How long after the trend moved to TFT dashes did it take Kawasaki to get rid of that ridiculous display they were using? It has nothing to do with passion. It's about a handful of small details Ducati gets right straight out of the crate and the Japanese brands (and some European brands) require you to spend money after the fact to fix.

What i think of Ducati: beautiful looking but badly engineered bikes when compared to japanese bikes. So much vibration through the grips and even through the wing mirrors! They're NOT made to a higher standard than a japanese bike, you're just kidding yourself. The japanese have mass production down to a T and the quality control is the best in the world.

v2 makes lots of vibration and inline 4 makes lots of buzzing. yes ducati made to a higher standard than the japanese. you must be blind not to notice the difference. even the rubber handgrip feels a lot more expensive not to mention others like the handlebar, LCD screen, Mirror, levers, footstep, paintjob, seat etc. its like comparing toyota camry and a mercedes E class. camry is cheaper and probably faster and more reliable too but its not a mercedes.

@@holypai you clearly haven't ridden any sports bikes. Ducati quality has always been questionable. In fact it's not just ducati bikes but Italian bikes and cars in general. Just because a ferrari is beautiful and fast doesn't make it high quality. The fit and finish of Japanese stuff is far superior. Have you not noticed the slackness of the v2 throttle? Maybe you should research it.

Only when the quality of the product doesn’t live up to the price. I think great examples are Harley and Zero motorcycles. They’re good bikes and I appreciate both of their goals. But in Harley’s case you shouldn’t have to pay MORE for older technology, the fact they stick with old school tech should make them less. And in the case of Zero, their subscription service is sickening. With a bike like the Panigale V2 you’re paying for cutting edge technology that other manufacturers copy, and incredible styling.

BMW's have better technology than Ducati and, as a matter of fact, Ducati has copied, or at least tried, the technological feats of BMW. BMW's are the most technological bikes in the world. When the Ducati V2 or V4 get's both the heated grips and cruise control, and match the TFT screen of the BMW, to catch up to the BMW, I'll be impressed. But, until then, I'm not impressed with Ducati's technology at all....

They already have a great TFT and heated grips are like a $60 upgrade that's useless on a Supersport. Cruise control would be decent to have. I don't really think Ducati has copied BMW, I think they're just both leaders/pioneers in their business. Every automotive manufacturer copies other companies when they create groundbreaking technology. With that said, Ducati has their own style and has created tons of incredible bikes. They also have developed their technology mostly in-house, it's not like they literally just put BMW parts in them. Saying you're not impressed with them is like saying, "I'm not really impressed Koenigsegg hit 300mph because Bugatti did it first so it's not a big deal."
