A few years ago, I saw a farmer complaining he was paid 20p a pound for apples he grew, when supermarkets were charging around £1.60. Well, he could open shop Friday - Sunday and sell them direct to the public for the same price. He could get together with other farmers selling different produce and organise a store between them, or a market stall. 'They' could make the profit, even from a weekly market stall.

The environmental laws are there to protect soil, water and pollinating insects. However, if Europe is bound by them then there should be 'zero imports' from countries which do not abide by them. Trashing your own country's home-grown industries by buying cheap imports has been going on for thousands of years, not just a recent thing. Humanity has always done it as soon as one group of people can discovered a low economy willing to sell the same product for less. Despite the technology, there's always someone with a pair of oxen, a rough wooden plough and an income of a dollar a year who is quite willing to work for an extra dollar, supermarkets ultimately making larger and larger profits on the difference. Governments and supermarket chains alike don't know how food is being processed abroad. We've all heard about slavery and slave like conditions on South East fishing fleets. Yet, still the fish comes in from there. My husband accidentally bought fish from China in our local, just last week. It was such bad quality, obviously very old and possibly defrosted and refrozen multiple times (certainly more than once). That is not fit for human consumption. My son alerted me to the fact that my dried apple rings also came from China. There is no alternative, so I have to go without. In the supermarket, the lion's share of fruit comes from South America. I don't know what they spray all over it. The shops probably don't care. The government has made it clear it doesn't care about anything anymore. Shoppers want to support farmers in the UK and in Europe. However, just as we have less and less hoi e where our technology, clothes and books are produced, the same is true of our food. I really wish every protest didn't spawn a bunch of arsonists to start setting fire to things though. What is it with men and wanting to start fires? Just don't. It's releasing toxic chemicals into the air burning just any old rubbish, and you're breathing it in. It causes local councils to have to pay to fix things, when they're also strapped for cash. Nobody wins and the government doesn't care.

Speaking for LATAM Ecuador especifically, farmers are paid close to nothing unless they are part of bug conglomeratatws where still the workers get minimum wage constantly exposed to pesticides with no real concern for their health. Small farmers are paid close to nothing and lately the cost of production is high compared to what they are able to sale. Middlemen are the ones to make the most. And that has to change... Anyways just venting here.
@rosshilton11 ай бұрын
The European Union was formed in November 1993 with the Maastricht Treaty. The strength of the EU was it’s protectionist anti globalisation trade barriers that made it more economic to buy from within the group. The aim of the EU was to protect member nation jobs, farming and industry, by adding tariffs to imported products. But within six months the World Trade Organisation was established by 123 nations at a meeting in Marrakesh. This agreement was exactly the opposite to the protectionist anti globalisation trade barriers created by the EU. At its core was trade liberalisation, include binding the negotiated tariff reductions for an extended period. This WTO agreement has created a nightmare for the EU. In theory as member nations they should abide by WTO guidelines. They ignored this for around a decade, and concentrated upon side issues like free movement within the block. They also began a back door campaign to thwart the WTO by implementing EU standards that could be used as non tariff barriers to trade. But by the early 2000s they were under increasing pressure to open up markets. In response to this they began negotiating Free Trade Agreements, that contained strict protectionist limitations and were FTA in name only. The agreement with Japan was actually called a Economic Partnership Agreement or EPA. It specifically limited Japanese car imports, making it a mockery, and was not an FTA. In recent times even the FTA negotiations have collapsed. The Australia FTA fell apart, and the Mercosur FTA is falling apart when the EU wanted severe limitations on agricultural products. Hence the recent French, German, Belgian and Dutch farmer protests. The EU is now an anachronism in a free trade world. It is desperately trying to find a justification for its existence, when in fact it’s relevance ended with the signing of the WTO.
