We live in France and overall we find people very friendly. However there are the odd one or two rude people who we have encountered but we just say that you get rude people in any country. The last one was a woman who accused my Husband of stealing her trolley in Lidl and was trying to take it off him despite the fact it had his empty bags in it. He gave up arguing as she was shouting really loudly then she saw her own trolley further down the aisle, shrugged her shoulders and left his trolley. Now that is rude. No apology or nothing. 🙄

I've been visiting Paris since 1984 & every trip has been pleasant & memorable for all the right reasons. The locals I've encountered have consistently been accommodating & polite so this reputation of rudeness among the French still eludes me up to this day.

We went to Paris last year and stayed for over a week. I expected a bit of rudeness but honestly experienced the opposite - everyone in the shops and restaurants were warm and kind (and one cashier at La Grande Épicerie ensured that we did not over pay for a cloth bag). Everyone seemed to want us to leave happy. We fell in love with France and will be back!!

So touching. You describe the integrity of bonds in France. Another way of thinking about "rudeness" is that the French so value their friends that they don't care to perform superficial things with people they just met.

It seems counterproductive to be rude to people pouring money into your city as tourists though isn’t it? Especially if you have a business that depends on tourists.

Great video! I have very pleasant encounters in France (the occasional rudeness but that’s not just France and I don’t take it personally) I have never had bad experiences in Paris and have met some of the loveliest people (locals) there. It does help that I speak intermediate French 😊. And I’m probably French underneath as I’m direct, honest and not afraid to speak these words. 🤷‍♀️

Indeed, no country on earth is exempt from rude people. Paris in particular has the drawback of any large city worldwide, it's a source of stress that takes its toll on people and their behavior; saying this as an ex-city dweller, now a "refugee" in the countryside 😀.

Theo, I have good news for you: the word 'honest' is pronounced in English in a French way, without 'h' 🙂. I know how difficult it is for the Romance language speakers to pronounce 'h' but in this word you can just relax and skip 'h' at the beginning. I like your channel, you create positive vibes.

I'm an American who has visited France 11 times. Countless times I have observed other Americans (mostly unawarely) doing everything possible WRONG, while interacting with the French. I WAS very lucky to have had an incredible Parisien high school teacher who taught us not only FRENCH, but ALSO French manners and customs. Being calm, soft-spoken, POLITE and patient -- those are NOT "American" habits. Growing up, we all instead learn that being "assertive" and "direct" -- "gets results." But such behavior in France translates as: "I am a superior person. YOU don't matter. Do what I want -- you peon." (This is the EXACT OPPOSITE of "equality" and "fraternity." !!!!) Even in Paris -- I have seen massively over-worked waiters who have gotten pretty jaded (shell-shocked by 3,000,000 tourists a year!). So, in Paris Bistros (not in super-rush times), I enjoy "melting a waiter" -- by being calm, funny, and showing that I get his or her challenging life! I usually succeed. This is not "all about" US pushy-and-unconscious-appearing 'Murkins -- we are visiting THEIR country. (Google-Translate French below . . .

I am from Canada, and my first ever French teacher in elementary school didn't like me and singled me out in front of the class, when I got to high school my French teacher was not as mean but was just mean enough that I didn't participate in French class and ended up failing and taking another credit instead. I only knew how to say my name in French until about a year ago and then I met someone who is Acadian from Canada and super nice and began learning French on Duolingo, I'm now almost at an A2 level and love the language. I didn't realize I was associating the whole language and culture with just one mean teacher in elementary school, since I now have a whole new appreciation for French culture I became curious to learn more about what I tuned out for so many years!

French people aren't rude, not even in Paris. I'm American and spent a week in Paris, and everyone I delt with was polite enough, with very few minor exceptions. Hot tips: Don't dress like a scum bag, and make an attempt to speak French. Also, be courteous! If you are polite (say: hello, excuse me, please, thank you) people will be polite back to you. Amazing concept, I know.

I think you have summed up the French psyche very well ; both the good and the not so good. I think a big thing for foreigners visiting is to really make a huge effort to learn the language. It goes a long way towards building good relations. It is your homeland, your country and we are always guests even if we live there. I do not live in France. However I am working very hard on my French and aiming to achieve a high level of fluency in time. Of course what each individual can achieve is going to be different. Your English is very fluent; except ,uncharacteristically, you got the title wrong. "Why do people think the French are rude? " or "Are French people really rude" would be correct.

I think you (as a visitor) have to radiate the right kind of energy, understand the rules of politeness and yes speak and understand French. If you do that it's fantastic. If you don't understand what's expected of you, if you can't speak and understand, if you've got a chip on your shoulder then yeah, not every experience is going to be a good one.

I do not think the French are rude, I think Scandinavians are super rude! I think overpriviledged people are quite rude without realizing them. People are just angry over small things, I encountered some people who looked for food from trash bags and dumpsters, they cleaned them, cook them and feed to themselves and to their children.

I have been to France many times, I have only ran into rude people on the Metro and it wasn't rude to be but older pensioners. My last time (Nov 22) one was threatening an older lady for calling him out for not paying to get in as we all went through. My French is not great as it's been decades since university my body language stepping between them made him leave her alone. Otherwise I find the French to be kinder and more helpful than others on the continent.

I've been to France twice (Paris and Lyon), and I haven't met anyone who was rude. My French language skills are not very good. When I'm in France, I always greet people in French and ask in French if they speak English. If English is not an option, I use my bad French skills. (If I'm very desperate, I will use my phone as a translator!) I've found French people to be very patient, pleasant, and polite overall. For what it's worth, the "rudest" people I've experienced as a group outside of my home country were British people in London. Even there, most people I dealt with were polite. There's always someone who is rude in any group, regardless of country. It's not worth dwelling on it in my opinion.
