I live in a big US city. Most of the time I feel I’m the only one dressed for an occasion. No matter how fine is the place, you see men in cargo shorts, crocks and wrinkled t shirts. Ghastly.

I was supposed to stay there for 3 weeks, after 2 weeks I could not take it anymore though. It was just boring. There was just nothing to do. Just going by the images you show, I'd say Italians are stylish for what they're NOT wearing: no baseball caps, t-shirts with decals on them or torn jeans. No hoodies, oversized necklaces or grills that spell out "CASH MONEY" in rhinestones on their teeth. Also, their pants arent hanging below their butts, their clothing isn't three sizes too big and they're not trying to "make a statement" by going against expectations. Italian culture is very big on presenting a "bella figura." One of the ways they do that is to dress stylishly. But, the concept of stylishness applies to every aspect of the lifestyle of Italians who want to present a bella figura.

Getting well dressed is more and more seldom nowadays. Jeans tshirt and sneakers are now the global way of dressing up (not even trend anymore). Except in some higher positions but even there no more ties, jeans, casual shoes etc. Sad. But multi billion companies like Nike, Levi's, Gap and others are mainly responsible. You can't even find anymore shoes in malls or regular shoe stores, you have to go to the few refined ones. For children? Only rubber shoes. The clothing companies don't offer anymore a chance to the general population (they are considered for them as low class) a chance to get somehow well dressed all what counts is their profit. They sell super slim, skinny, tights, t-shirts, hoodies rubber shoes whatever sells the most. And worse all items are labeled for display as free advertisement (logos and names). Italy is not an exception. The stylish you see here are the invited in special events like fashion shows, nominations, etc. In the 30s to 60s it was the general population that was well dressed (at least the largest part of it)

silk in italy it's something outsiders would not expect. and if you travel trough modern italy countryside... well you will not notice because it's not there, anymore. but my grandfather was a silk worker during the war, silk was crucial for the war effort because you would use the strong fibers to make parachutes and other ropes that require strenght and low weight. however, after the war and the introduction of NYLON silk lost it's importance and the silk production, and all the farming behind it, quickly disappeard. but for centuryes silk (and beeing able to work the silk) were among the best pying jobs for the working class. also, no matter how poor you were, everybody that could afford a suit for him and theyr family would commission one because you have to go to church in sunday, and you HAVE TO be dressed properly to go to church. so you would find silk handkerchiefs everywhere (EVERYBODY had an hankie with him everytime), silk shirts and in general taylors in every town, no matter how small. and when a dress was damaged, it would have been fixed by expert hands. the idea was that even if you are poor, you have to dress in a decent way, "the dress don't make the monk, but appearances are deceiving"... with the economic boom and the new found wealth in the 50s and 60s we stopped doing that. tailors are more scarce today, and we usually trow away damaged dresses, even because theyr quality went down real quick so, no real incentive to repairing a damaged one.

As its said in the phrase- personal style is, well, very personal. You're right, a man (or anyone for that matter) won't start dressing well if they have no desire or necessity to do so, so you badgering them about it will most likely only push them further into their habits or just plain annoy them. Either start setting the example yourself, or start associating with people who already make it a habit to dress well themselves- not for you but for themselves. Trying to change people to suit your own personal standards will only give you both a headache.

Because Italian factories buy the finest natural fibers. Italian textiles and fabrics are the finest. They make classic clothing that wears well and does not fall apart. If you want Zara (Spanish) or H&M (Swedish) and have clothing fall apart before the next social function, ok. I wear classic Italian and Swiss suit and tie and get amazing respect from staff in shops, restaurants, airports, etc. Yeah so do the ripped jeans and dirty t-shirt SV billionaires with their Black Card, but they fly pj Private Jet. For the rest of us, classic Italian attire is worth it.

Clothes are merely the half of it. It's the way your average Italian carries himself with natural poise which the British don't generally have.

are you making broad generalizations about all Italians? probably, but I love it. I know it sounds bad, but it is literally true, and if you are going to generalize, I apreciate that it is positive. multo bene, mi amici. arrivederci

Having been stationed in Italy, most didn’t dress like this. Poor fitting jeans, everywhere. Maybe the rich in a big city. Also, much of the craft houses are being purchased by the Chinese and keeping the Italian name. I think that was another reason why Chanel was buying all their craft houses to keep them run in France.
@SoulEternalPeaceWarrior772 жыл бұрын
You're totally right about the craft houses. There were some "Italian made" clothes I was researching & I found out A LOT of the companies are under an umbrella conglomerate that make clothes in China & then ship them out under the Italian name for hundreds of dollars around the world. Fashion is a total scam 🤣

It is not about being rich or poor, it is full of rich people that dress in flashy designer tracksuits... it is about being more or less traditional

@@garlicgirl3149 Yeah, if the website you're buying from doesn't specify where exactly it's made, more often than not it's made in China. Real Italian designers will pride themselves on telling you the city, what material, the craftsmanship they use.

Lol you're 40 years late man! I'm a businessman in Northern Italy working with managers in Turin, Milan, Padua, Roma etc. You dream of Italian Italian elegance! In business meetings you find people 3 days behind the shave, no tie or polyester tie, suits and white sneakers, tattoos exhibited, ankle slacks no socks and corduroy slippers. You're stuck in the 60's... I buy my silk ties, shoes and suits from U.K. that's the real country of elegance..

Even as a kid in the mid 70s, when watching my favourite film The Italian Job, I could see the Italian actors had an effortless style about them. Rossano Brazzi is the epitome of cool at the beginning (though driving a Lambo Miura helps), with his slim jim tie and wraparound shades. Raf Vallone is the every inch the dapper Mafia boss, and even his underlings look absolutely sub-zero. I don't think we'll every have another era like the 60s for sheer coolness, in terms of fashion and design.
