So you grow your root stock from seed is that correct? If so, do you guys sell the seeds you use for root stock? Also, about how old do you let your root stock get before using for grafting? Thank you for another video information video!

We try to grow our one here but seeds have been very short the last 2 years here because of weather. So we don’t have any to offer currently and need more than we are growing now. We did typically grow about 20k for understock each year before that and hope to get back to that again. We typically grow them about 2 years in a liner pot before grafting. Thanks for watching! Greatly appreciate it!

@@MrMapleShow how much of the root structure is affected by genetic variations? If you produce a seed by two palmatum, you don't necessarily get the same genetic material as the parent, and that can cause differences right?

I know alot of people who are into Bonsai that I have had to have this discussion with because they get mad that nurseries don't sell alot of Japanese Maple seedlings or cuttings. I think experienced Bonsai artists understand why, but those newer to the art don't generally understand this.

Very interesting, grafted roses as an example just don't live nearly as long as an own-root does. I wonder why maples are so different? I also would be very interested in how you deal with spotted lantern fly? I got an order from you last summer, and suddenly I had spotted lantern flies throwing themselves against the screened in porch, trying to get to the maples that I hadn't planted yet.
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
Likely has to do with the root system genetics. Maples are greatly improved in durability in most instances by having the best roots possible. I’m not sure about the lantern flys I haven’t had an issue with them in WNC 6b here but check with your local agriculture extension agent as they may have better solutions for your specific area. Thanks for watching!

Out of curiosity, would it work to graft a Japanese maple to a bigleaf maple or vine maple, which are both common here in the Pacific Northwest?

Acer circinatum is in section palmata so it is compatible with Acer palmatum though it heals slowly.

Loving the videos guys! If a home grower/hobbyist just wants to play around with seedlings, do y’all have tips on which JMs generally have good rooting characteristics versus those that don’t? For example, never try seedlings of weeping cultivars because they almost always have poor root systems.

So is air layer bad or good ?
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
It’s ok for a bonsai plant. Typically not great for a landscape plant. I personally don’t recommend them as it can be a source for damage to developed trees. It can be done for sure and we may do a video on how to with some friends who are experts with Air layers but over all I don’t recommend it and especially for nursery production.

Would a rooted cutting off of a rootstock tree be as vigorous as a rootstock grown from a seed (for the purpose of using it as rootstock)? I'm a little bit unsure if the vigor is because the rootstock was grown from seed or if it's because you are not using the rootstock of a named variety. I'm asking because if I have a acer palmatum (unnamed) grown on it's own rootstock that is vigorous, can I use *cuttings* from that plant to serve as the rootstock of other named varieties? Also, can acer palmatum rootstock work as rootstock to graft other japanese maples like acer shirasawanum?

@@MrMapleShow Got it. So, for grafting japanese maples, you should ALWAYS use a rootstock that is developed from a seed, not use that rootstock to grow as a mature tree to develop clones (via cuttings or air layering). To use those clones as rootstock is not good because they will never be as vigorous as the rootstock from seed. Another question: if you took the seeds produced from a named variety of japanese maple (i.e., Acer Palmatum Sangu Kaku), would those seedling make good rootstock or should you always go with the seeds of a generic ("standard", "unnamed", "wild"?) acer palmatum? I would imagine a dwarf dissected maple variety (like acer palmatum Crimson Queen) would not make a good rootstock plant, but maybe I'm mistaken. Thanks for your very informative videos.

@@sharpie510 check out our videos we have done on grafting and seed collection. Green Acer palmatum are typically used because they heal quickly and also develop good root systems. Seed from cultivars has lots of variation and laceleafs would make very poor rootstock but others may also. Acer palmatum ssb palmatum works best

grafting for bonsai doesn't work at all, you could sell maples on their own roots for a lot more money if it was a rooted cutting marketed towards bonsai enthusiasts
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
Much smaller market than people planning to plant them. Plus many cultivars do not root or so well on their own roots. We do offer a non grafted filter where we exclusively have non grafted maples. Selection is limited and they do sell out when in stock for sure
