Canadian here. Canada doesn’t actually have Free Speech protection in our charter. It’s actually worded “Freedom of Expression”. All the print adds and magazines we get in the mail are filled with "POC"--usually black but sometimes half black/half white people, more rarely Hispanic (which is crazy when you consider how large that population is in this country), and almost no Asian or white people. Last I checked, the US was at least 60% white and black people accounted for around 13% of the population. Truly bizarre.

A comedian, Nicolay Ramm, here in Norway actually had to remove an episode of his show where he impersonated a japanese game show, and he was the japanese host. Yes, he is white. Steve Colbert also did a show (I think the show was "Strangers With Candy") where Colbert shows a collection of dolls that are racist caricatures, saying things like "Oh, here's a little rabbi with money bags...and here's a little Indian with firewater..." It's realllly bad. Someone on that show also described a mentally challenged character as "having the strength of a gorilla, and probably loves cake." They're disgusting.

K-Von, you are MY HERO! This is an awesome video and your writing and editing skills are top notch! All the time I started to think of a point, you addressed it immediately... and when it got to the point of exhaustion you let it hang there and then took it home. I totally agree with it all. As an entertainer myself, I see so many bizarre audiences that experience cognitive dissonance. One wedding party I did had me laughing on the floor, because the entire thing was 100% old school Greek... but after the old people left the last hour was devoted to 90's gangsta rap and the lyrics were nast-tee... and we had so much fun. I was laughing watching the bride jump on tables and let it all out. Not at all racist.... just loving the music just as we love all entertainers that make us feel good! One thing you missed, the Indian guy in Short Circuit came out recently and he is Jewish.... he says people never recognize him, because that character was totally made up! I was surprised! And the Indian in the environment commercials from the 1970's (the guy that cries at the garbage... it made me tear up too as a kid) wasn't a Native American at all... he was black! When I learn these things I don't get mad, I get impressed... in high school when I found out that the majority of super models in the magazines promoting brands are actually young boys, I was like "woa!!".... even in nature Animals do it too.. bugs pretending to be sticks, chameleons pretending to be rocks, some of them pretend to be leaves and even impersonate the illusion of being blown in the wind.... come on man! You are AWESOME and I am glad you have this platform. If you are EVER in the Chicago area, let me know!

This is the best explanation of black face I've seen. Well done, K-von. On 'come as your hero' day at school, I remember a young white boy being reprimanded by his teachers for wearing black face. He had no choice. His hero was a BLACK person. Hardly racism, more like respect and admiration, yet he was made to feel like he'd done a bad thing. I am not the citizen of the US, maybe that’s why I don’t really feel the problem, but as soon as it is not extra stereotypical, normal looking black or asian or brown face, then there is nothing to be offended. I actually never understand why people get offended when you call asian as asian or black as black. I am asian and if someone calls me asian I am okay. I just think US Society overreacts about racism. Don’t talk about it and accept everyone as human , not black not white not gay not whatever it is. Just humans. We are all same breed. It works
