Im hesitant to say this, because I know I'll be notified with like 50,000 replies hating on me. But I don't. I don't want the originals back. I prefer the new. If I'm going to be completely honest. Also I know that no one asked, before you say it. Just felt like piping the other side of this battle, which I've seen thrive in their safe places where no Color Splash haters would go often. They're just too afraid to speak up. Trust me, you probably believe its like 99% want old and 1% prefer the new, but its more like 60% to 40%. Quick note I should probably address: I haven’t ever played the original or Super. I have TTYD, but by the time I got to around the first boss it just hadn’t clicked with me yet (which all the other new ones I had played did). I also like most people don’t like Sticker Star, but it is my first Paper Mario game so I’m a little bit Nostalgia biased. When I said new I was talking more about Color Splash and Origami King than I was Sticker Star.

I think that whichever half of the series one person starting playing with, is they one they normally stick to, even if the other side has valid arguments. For example, Sticker star was my first ever Paper Mario game, and I love Color Splash to death, so I'm more of a "Modern Paper Mario" fan. I do understand why people hate Sticker Star and Color Splash, but some of the parts people hate about those are parts that I love. Now I am tied between Color Splash and Origami King being my favorites. I have played some of TTYD, like I think almost to the first boss, but It just doesn't have a click with me because I started with and grew up on on the other side of Paper Mario. And I think all those people who like TTYD and the OG more just started with those games, and didn't have the click with Sticker Star and Color Splash like me with TTYD. I hope this explanation goes out to more people so they can understand my side of the argument, because currently due to my reasoning there are statistically more people that love the other side better (because of it being their first) that its getting a little overwhelming Edit: Just watched another minute of the video after making this comment, and found that you already sort-of addressed that.

I Definitely Agree With you, it's what happened to me with the atelier series there's fans who love the og rpg games and those of us like myself who love the newer jrpg style of games. I'm basically saying the same thing about the new games that you did about paper mario, me falling in love with the 3 ryza installments they clicked with me way more than Any of the first 20 og rpg style games did i couldn't even Play the rpg return to form called atelier sophe 2 as the newer ryza jrpg style was so drastically different that it didn't matter if i played the older style it's not the same genre or mechanics that i fell in love with. I have friends who like the older style more and that's valid i just can't even Buy Them To Even Experience The Og Style Because The Newer Style Is Just Too Different, The rpg return to form was so different from the ryza installments that it Only Hurt Us Newer Fans.

Interesting. I think you boiling down the argument to "toxic fan vs toxic fan" is actually correct. Thing is, writing it off there would be a disservice to this whole situation. The Old vs Modern Paper Mario split reminds me a lot of Teen Titans vs Teen Titans Go. The issue happened when Nintendo (in TTG's case Cartoon Network) made something that, one, completely shut out original fans, and two, WAS HORRIBLE. That's not the kind of thing people will immediately listen to, and yeah yeah, subjectivity, but Sticker Star is A HORRIBLE GAME. I will cite Chuggaconroy's Sticker Star Video Series as evidence to that game, as a whole, being OBJECTIVELY bad. TTG meanwhile, traded the well-rounded core of comedy, storytelling, character work, world building, and the fantastic villain of the Original... for comedy exclusively... much more childish, low-brow comedy. I will cite the episode where Cyborg and Beast Boy say nothing but "waffles" for 11 minutes, and the one that ended with every toilet on earth leaving to form an alien colony or something (not kidding, this was a real episode). But there's also the issue of how neither tried appealing to the original audience and just abandoned them. Even for as divisive as SPM is, it's still grouped in as OT because it has the core DNA of the OT. Story, compelling characters, creativity, partners. A lot of things were lacking, but it shared the same identity. Then the series becomes an Action Adventure with bare bones storytelling and no interesting characters. At most, you could say they're funny games, and that Origami King is pretty good. OT fans being abandoned doesn't give people the right to be toxic, but I'd argue it gives them more ground to work with. New Trilogy fans refusing to want the series the chance is exactly what the OT fans were worried about. That, and the large majority of them likely haven't played ANY of the OT games. I played Sticker Star, so I at least have a right to say it's terrible and knew the series following that formula would NOT be something I'd like.

to break the ice as a fan of the older games, I felt Color Splash AND Origami King had fantastic settings, visuals - even some funny characters along the way...but I could not get past how annoying the battle systems were and/or how useless and meaningless they were. Those games certainly kept moving a step in the right direction - further and further. My hope with the remakes is that it entices Nintendo to give us a proper sequel to the originals.

I only played TTYD amd Super but I thoroughly enjoyed both because of how emersive the stories felt. Only modern one I'd give a chance is Origami King since it has a battle system that seems competent and the story and characters are likeable enough.I didn't bother with Sticker Stat because it felt like the battle system in that game was a sin to RPGs. It just rubbed me the wrong way and Colot Splash looked more enjoyable but ghe only highlight to me were the lines of dialogue given to the shy guys.

You got me thinking about what a NEW modern paper Mario could look like. It's a dream scenario but still, imagine a true sequel to TTYD. It takes place, let's say 2-3 maybe as many as 5 years after Mario and the gang defeat the shadow queen. All the party members are going about their lives, and the game starts with Mario and Luigi receiving a letter or something that brings them both to Rogueport once again. The game starts off with the brothers splitting up and going separate directions (east rougeport and west rogueport) to fight some force that has taken over. Ideally we would get to play as both characters, and at some point through the chapters we meet new party members and maybe reunite (temporarily) with old party members. They could bring the best elements from each game: character swapping from Super, gameplay of the first two, Mario and luigi exploring together like the M&L series. BUT In an ideal world we play as Mario and have our own party members while Luigi once again goes on his own adventure. But this time we get to play as Luigi instead of hearing him tell the story. Maybe this becomes available after the end of each chapter, and there becomes a way to swap between the two brothers. Even if the Luigi chapters are shortened versions of the main story I will be an extremely happy camper.

I like how the first two were carrying the touch of Super Mario RPG and expanding on Mario's universe. I wasn't a fan of Super's gameplay but I really loved how dark yet funny the story got, the other 3 two I played and eventually sold/deleted not too long after I got them and haven't played origami King after seeing the battle system and bosses. I see the series in a somewhat similar situation as Luigi's Mansion except that series remain consistent throughout. With Paper Mario, We just don't really know what it is anymore, one game it could a 2D platformer, the next its New Soup with paper, and who knows what their going to do after the TTYD remake.

I think the issue that Nintendo messed up on was that they completely abandoned the RPG Paper Mario genre for literally 20 years despite there being a consistent audience for that type of game. Well to play devils advocate for a second He Knew what made the first 3 games good remember the sticker star beta version shown at e3 2010 it had everything that made the ogs so good he Obviously Wanted Us Everything We've Been Screaming For, but Miamoto stopped him and played that demo and said it was too similar to ttyd and told him to make it different than any other game in the series and he had to start over, it's not tenobays fault he wanted to give us what we wanted but was Forced By The Higher Ups To Change The Game, What Happened After That Went Completely Off The Rails To Where We Are Right Now, That Was Miamotoes Fault Not Tenobays.

Not everyone is gonna have the same opinion, and that's actually kinda a blessing in disguise. It's great hearing different takes from people who have differing opinions about something. On one condition though: they shouldn't be talking down on people who have said different opinions. Let's make an example: Sticker Star is one of my least favorite Mario games. Am I gonna be angry if I see someone who likes the game? Of course not. If they like the game, that's great. Am I gonna disagree with someone who says that the game is overhated? Maybe, but not to the point of starting a fight. Agree to disagree, after all. Someone saying that people who criticize the game are "TTYD fans who can't handle change"? Now THAT would be where I draw the line: while there are admittedly people who just blindly hate the game just because it's not like TTYD, saying that applies to everyone who criticizes the game is such a reductive way to dismiss valid criticism levied against the game: such as the battle system being poorly executed, the story being practically nonexistent, and the characters mostly having rather generic designs. And it's kind of hypocritical of that someone to call "TTYD fans" toxic while they're out here generalizing people criticizing the game as one giant toxic mob and putting all the stigma on fans of one specific game in the franchise. The fact of the matter is, neither one side of the franchise is more or less toxic than the other. For every toxic classic Paper Mario fan there is a toxic modern Paper Mario fan. However, this toxic portion is, ultimately, nothing more than a vocal minority: they're very loud, but also fairly small in numbers. And letting said vocal minority paint your perception of the whole fanbase is just ridiculous. TLDR: Criticism and praise are both perfectly fine, but the former shouldn't be taken too far to the point where it stops being constructive and becomes straight out flaming, while the latter should come from a place of legitimately liking it, not to just spite the people criticizing; that's called "toxic positivity".

I haven't played TTYD but I have seen Chuggaconroy play it. and I would be more willing to play a game like that as oppose to Origami King. but thats only due to it not feeling like a bloated experience in the actual battle system. Basically its whatever I would be in the mood for since the feel like of the story for both are different. Older fans have had those incredible experiences with the first two Paper Mario games and are extremely upset at how their favorite Mario series is being treated and how inferior they have made the newer games. You are saying Newer fans don't like the Older fans because they are being made to feel bad for liking the newer games, which was basically EXACTLY what I was saying when I said "Newer fans see Older fans talking about how garbage the newer games are in comparison, and take offense to it". And I'm not "talking down" to the younger fans, I'm just stating a fact. Most younger/newer fans that were part of the divisiveness had never touched paper Mario 64 or TTYD. They didn't have the perspective of the older fans so they didn't understand why they were so militant when it came to attacking the newer games. So naturally the newer fans didn't like that the older fans were ripping on one of their favorite Nintendo games and rushed to defend it. That's when the divisiveness started and devolved into "You are just nostalgia blind, you want all the games to be the same!" and "The newer games are GARBAGE IN EVERY WAY, If you think these games are good you are an IDIOT!" arguments.

@@gboogie3257 Its not "talking down" to them, it's just a fact. An older fan who never played the newer Paper Mario games also don't know what they are missing, because they haven't tried them. There are some redeeming qualities to the newer games that older fans who never gave them a shot would never know about, and that they'd want in their ideal Paper Mario game.

I wish more people would look at Sticker Star as a smaller, portable version of Colour Splash. Some people just say they kind of like Colour Splash but absolutely hate Sticker Star when they're overall pretty similar games.

the problem is both that Sticker Star was a letdown in everyway possible. but even ignoring the negativity it got whenever that was the most recent paper mario game, its still not a good game at all

@@tallyikroe2476 It was a letdown to classic paper Mario fans, I prefer it and colour splash to ttyd but I do believe they would be best as a spin-off series so they could keep making classic style games at the same time, they both deserve to exist and to be liked or criticized. But just to be clear I do like ttyd and it’s very high quality, it’s just not my favourite game.

Ranking the games best to worst WITH REASONS I never played Super or 64, so those won't be on here lol 1. Color Splash. The card mechanic is cool, I LOVE the Koopalings, and I also like how they took ideas from Sticker Star, my first ever paper Mario (so it's nostalgic for me), and made them better so it was not inherently bad. I have no Idea how people can still call this Sticker Star 2.0, when it looks so much better, the mechanics are so much better, and the OST SLAPS. Best Nintendo soundtrack I've ever heard, especially the map theme and how it gets better every chapter. My Wii U charger completely broke a couple days ago, and conveniently just then did I have the urge to play Color Splash and that feeling has not yet gone away. So it's kind of just the only thing on my mind. 2. Origami King. Amazing storyline, cool puzzle battle mechanics, and I think the item system is cool too. I for whatever reason feel like it works better here than it does in TTYD and 64. I'm just not too used to those ones. Also, why do people hate this game still if it removed almost everything they were roasting the previous two for? They removed things, they removed that battle system, they gave back partners!! They kept toads, but to be honest I think I like toads more than I like original characters. They did have original characters, too! Just not many of them. 3. Sticker Star. While I do see why people hate it so much, it's my first ever Paper Mario game and it holds a place in my heart. It hurts that piece in my heart every time I see someone talking smack about it, too. It's not my favorite, but I might return to it often in the future because of the memories I had with it. 4. TTYD. Very controversial, I know, but I just didn't get a click when playing it. I wasn't too big of a fan of the battle system, I had stopped playing for a few days once, came back, and had zero clue how the battle system worked. i think that's a little flaw, is with Sticker Star and Color Splash the battle system is pretty straight forward that you don't really need much of a tutorial and can really just jump back in whenever. But with TTYD, oh no you got to remember. I also had no Idea where to go and was soooo lost in one of the *FIRST AREAS IN THE GAME* that I just am not a fan.

Not really gonna rag on your ratings because ratings are arbitrary at the end of the day, but I hear the "they fixed your gripes in Origami King, why aren't you happy old fans" claim all the time from your side of the aisle and it's super annoying. They removed a battle system that was tedious and annoying and replaced it with one that, while better, was still tedious and annoying with hardly any purpose. Partners hardly do anything - only one has real field abilities (the toad) and they're region-locked, so you can't even bring them with you after a certain point. Saying partners are back in TOK is like a server arguing the plain burger on a bun he gave me was what I asked for when I ordered a cheeseburger with a bunch of toppings. When I hear the phrase "partners in Paper Mario," I think of active, functional PARTNERS that aren't just story props.
