Everything in life is a Cost vs Benefits analysis. I moved from Toronto to Vancouver as a young man in 1992. I attended UBC and worked and lived downtown for 20 years spending nights after work in Yaletown restaurants and pubs. In that time the population of the city doubled. Between 30,000 - 70,000 people a year moving here. Now that I'm 52 years old my interests and priorities have changed. If a person has children it's not surprising to move out to the suburbs. I've been in Abbotsford for 3 years now. I don't care about going to the beach anymore, I don't ski anymore, I use to enjoy the crowded streets of Robson and Granville but now I don't. I've been entertaining moving to New Brunswick where I can buy a house on 5 acres for $130,000 (small hobby farm). That's hard to resist. I know families with 3 children who have moved to Edmonton and other places where you can make more money and your dollar goes much further. For young people and/or young couples Vancouver is a great place to live. Without question the best weather in Canada only better in Victoria. But I know people who were born and raised here and now live in Regina and Calgary and they find the winters nicer for them in those cities, stating they don't like the wet damp cold we have in Vancouver. It all boils down to personal preference and cost benefits. My aunt and uncle moved to Aldergrove/Abbotsford from Ontario 4 years after I moved to Vancouver in 1996. They've since retired to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, which is the retirement capital of Canada. With a lifetime of savings for 70 year olds it's possible. If you're a young professional you can't beat Vancouver for lifestyle.

OMG, sounds like we are twins, i'm 54 and bored by the mountain and beach views for many years. i moved in Vancouver in 2000 and now living in surrey since 2013. i would not move to NS or NB just because a house is 130k I emigrated from western europe and i realize that people over there can afford more maybe double with their 3000euro income than a 6000$ net income made in canada. sorry still life affordability is better in EU including buying a property or rent one .

As someone from Toronto, while Vancouver is gorgeous as a city I found it extremely boring aside from nature/outdoorsy activities. I also found it very hard for people to let you in, which I was surprised because I thought Toronto people were bad (grumpy & pushy) but... I got the impression that no one in Van really wants to make connections and people are very suspicious and reserved.

I had seasonal depression and severe migraines all 7 years I lived in Victoria. Sometimes my migraines lasted up to 3 days. Vancouver is gloomy all winter as well. Moved to GTA and had only light headaches a few times. So relieved that I don't have a lingering headache everyday of the winter anymore, no migraines so far. There are a lot of sunny days here.

There are massive populations of people from China, Japan, Thailand, India, the Middle East, etc. They are spread out all throughout the Vancouver area. It's unbelievably diverse. They may not all be concentrated in the downtown area but that's not really just "Vancouver" now is it?

Would it surprise you to know that many people from South America have lighter-colored skin - mostly because of their European heritage? According to the latest census numbers I can find, the "Black" population in Toronto (the metropolitan area being more than twice the size of Vancouver) is around 8% while it is 1% in Vancouver. That's not a massive difference. I think it's more a function of geography than some kind of immigration policy conspiracy. Asia is simply closer to BC. Seattle's demographics are very similar to Vancouver and if I had to wager a guess, New York is probably closer to Toronto from a demographics perspective. It's been that way for decades so shouldn't have been that much of a surprise when you made the move to Vancouver?

As someone who just moved to Van from Toronto: -The homelessness in certain areas is on a scale I've never seen in the entire world, (maybe skid row in LA?). The east side of Vancouver is an example to the world of what policies to never follow in terms of homelessness, drugs and mental health. -The mountains, hikes and views are even more awesome than you would imagine. -Summers are super sunny. -The ocean is astonishingly overrated, the water is brown at all the major beaches, and just never clear. Some beaches are a lot of fun though because good crowds (wreck beach). -Population is much less diverse than it thinks it is. 90% of people are either white or asian. Almost nobody jaywalks and people really respect rules. -Cheaper than Toronto now with Covid, very easy to find a room downtown around 1k/month.

As someone from LA looking to move to Vancouver they definitely do share some similarities. The high cost of living, homeless issue, and traffic, I mean especially LA being notorious for its traffic. Unfortunately seeing 1 hour of traffic has become normalized for me. Surprisingly a lot of people I talk to, including myself, want to move out of LA because of the weather as well. While having year round sunshine is nice, it gets pretty cumbersome when it consistently hits 30 degrees or more even during the "winter." It would be nice to see some real seasons. Solid videos btw!

I've lived in North Vancouver for almost 6 years and I love it. I fully identify with all of the negatives and reasons people leave but I agree that I'd rather have wet than cold and I just love the mountains and ocean. I will add that the other reason for the traffic issues is that there are no highways in Vancouver just around the outskirts because of some strong neighbourhood advocacy many years ago.

I think it’s also important to mentioned that a big part of the increasing homelessness problem is that other provinces are shipping their homeless population to Vancouver , through one way bus tickets, because the weather is more mild in Vancouver , giving them a better chance to survive... people on the streets from places like Nova Scotia and even Quebec..

Only thing I disagree is months without sun, I’m a landscaper so I can tell you with certainty that it very rarely rains all day every day. There is always breaks in the rain and sun pops out constantly. Again, I’m actually out there so I know. And I’m born and raised here so again, I know. Playing tennis outside in January doesn’t happen anywhere else in Canada so it’s a compromise for sure, we have some gorgeous days in the winter that feel like spring. Anyone else remember the Olympics in February 2010? It was 12 degrees some of those days.

Sorry I call bs, the sun does not “pop out”constantly, the breaks in rain just means it’s still cloudy but not rainy. Olympics was 10 years ago honey and that was an El Niño year (rare). The sun pops out constantly in winter , yeah you’re not for real. Maybe once spring comes round but one thing that is most definitely not popping out in winter here constantly is sun. You lie. Where did you grow up, Tsawassen?? That’s the sunniest part but still, not that sunny. It most definitely is months without sun, even if it’s not raining all day. I’m going to check back with you in a few months , it’s end of October now we’ll see how the season pans out the next few months and who’s right😉 Have fun landscaping in damp Vancouver this winter hey at least there’s no snow! The reality is, November to February it’s overcast with showers for days on end, then there might a break with some sun and cloud for a day or two but not more, then it’s back to grey. If the sun pops out it’s a rare thing.

I suffer from SAD so Vancouver would not be ideal for me. I do have a brother in Victoria and he absolutely loves BC. He is from Nanaimo and lived in Ontario for a bit but did not enjoy it at all. I myself grew up in Newfoundland so I know what it means to have no sun for weeks at a time!! Where I live now we get lots of sun and have gorgeous hot summers so that works very well for me!!! I think a common growing trend is people will choose to live in Vancouver, but they will work a rotational shift somewhere remote such as FSJ. The salaries offered for up north jobs in BC are too high to ignore.

I love Vancouver for it's Massive Bio Mass surrounding the city. The year round ice hockey facilities, the year round soccer. The parks and cycling. The ski hills right in the city. My wife and I raised our son in the city. Grandview/commercial drive. We had our little guy in capoeira classes, animation classes, hockey, futebol. It was a great city to raise children and be an active family involved in Arts and culture. Unfortunately, the city became flooded with foreign real estate speculators and criminal drug gangs who launder their profits from fentanyl into Vancouver housing, numbered accounts, luxury cars, etc..Corrupt politicians, the economy of poverty...so much festering dishonesty and greed seethes through the under current of what once was a charming west coast temperate rainforest city. The artists and musicians and writers and bohemians and backpackers and mountaineers have all left. The city worships the KARDASHIANS now.

I live in Edmonton, but lived in Vancouver back in 1999. Even at that time it was expensive and the employment situation was bad too. I was however, one of the lucky ones as I lived in Vancouver during the 60's, 70's, 80's, and most of the 90's. The lucky times were the 60's and 70's, as back then, Vancouver was an awesome city. Gastown was really cool and it was clean and safe to walk East Hastings. Then came Expo 86, and after that, the city took a huge slide into what it is now. Before I left I use to say to others, "what good is milder weather and pretty mountains, when you go hungry and can never enjoy them?" I left for Calgary and got a job and an affordable place to live in one day!!! Yes, it's not as mild of weather, but it just toughens you up and now it's been so long, I don't even think about it. I now own a great place in Edmonton, I have a full belly, my bills are paid, and the taxes are low. Vancouver is a very pretty city, (outside of East Hastings), but with what I have now, I would visit but never move back. Just one persons story to consider. All it takes is courage to make the move!

I agree with 100% of what you said. I lived in Van for about two years struggling with almost everything you mentioned, but I also had superb moments I will never forget. Today, after a couple of years that I had left the city, I think if the person wants to live there they need a good plan + focus + a considerable amount of money + a bit of luck. BTW, I was trying to find a video to convince me not to love Vancouver anymore... That was a big fail. hahaha Thanks for the awesome content. PS: You forgot to mention how it's hard making friends in Van. That's the worst one in my opinion.

It depends on the persons options. I'm from EU, Spain I was in Vancouver and I prefer it here in Spain and any other EU country. If you are in Canada or North America then I would either choose that city or Toronto

The cost of living is eventually going to crash the housing market because the number of homeless people is going to section off larger and larger portions of the city and ruin property values, as a 25 year old with a 40-45k salary moving out of my families house is not in the books if I want to live an enjoyable life. It is definitely bad when the market is pricing out future generations of locals, people are often too busy working to pay living expenses to make time for leisure activities that help in developing communities and giving people reasons to stay when they can have much better lives in other regions of Canada or the world. Not only the cost of living but also the extortionate ICBC insurance rates, that require you to pay the cost of a decent used car every 2 years on a clean driving record because without it you can't get a license plate for your vehicle.

it’s all about budgeting and spending within your limit (not getting a new iPhone every year or buying an expensive car to impress your friends etc.) I was able to buy an apartment 2yrs after college in the early 2000s by being careful with my spending and investing my savings. It might be harder now because real estate prices have gone up but with historic low interest rates, it’s much easier to service debt.

I have been living in Vancouver for 6 years now and yes I fully identify with every point made in this video, including the positives, and even some things not mentioned here (the proximity to nature). I knew what I was getting into when I moved here regarding the cost of living and the weather. Living in Quebec for 35 years has made me LOATHE snow... Well, as a kid, it's GREAT! Boy how fun it is to play outside in winter! But as an adult I've had enough of shoveling for a LIFETIME! Even taking that into account, I am now at a point where I am thinking of moving away. I am not looking forward, AT ALL, of living in a winter wonderland again. But one point that is driving me away is, well, driving! Really, THIS is the aspect that is getting under my skin more and more as I spend time here. I find it increasingly annoying to drive ANYWHERE around Vancouver. There's just TOO, MUCH, PEOPLE! It's not just rush hours as Adam mentions (though it's certainly a lot worse), but at any time of the day the roads are just full, and slow... and the traffic lights, good GOD this city can't coordinate traffic lights to save their lives! Tower are popping up everywhere, the region is getting thousands of additional residents every year, and with roads staying mostly the same it can't be any other way that the traffic is just going to get worse and worse. And yes, I know it's very likely just as bad in any big city. And that's where these moments to reflect have lead me, I've come to realize that my happiness lies outside of big cities. I don't need to nightlife, the entertainment, the pro sports or the big concerts. Well, not as much as when I was younger, at least. So why am I putting up with the big city negatives if I mostly stay away from the big city positives? As a matter of fact, I don't have to!

Having just gone through all the hassle of moving from Southern Ontario and all of the stuff that goes with moving from one province to another I really don't want to do it all again, but I'd be just fine with living in a place like Edmonton which is were I wanted to go originally. It was my wife and step son that wanted us here. Being Asian Vancouver feels more like home to them. I personally don't mind snow, but along about February it's nice to take a couple of weeks down south to break up the winter a bit.

Calgary is better! Locals are friendlier, there aren't any crazy traffic lanes, no homelessness, no pst tax, quality of living is good. A rented apartment costs approximately $2500 and higher.

Sun comes up every day. We get weeks of rainfall with sunny breaks in between, November to February. Our spring, summer,fall seasons are beautiful. Born and raised here. Don't forget people, we live in a rainforest, surrounded by mountains and ocean waters. Seasonal depression can be cured by getting out, rain or shine! Go to a gym, eat well, sleep well take lots of vitamin D ☺️

I want to move to Vancouver from Poland and the weather here is pretty similar, but even worse as winter is dark, wet and cold. Traffic in Warsaw is pretty much the same. Cost of living even in Van is still lower than in Warsaw, because here, we would earn 50k a year, but spend 2-3 as much, so yeah...

On rushhour, skytrain can be very busy too, closed to other big european and asian big towns. Hopefully there is a very high frequency of trains. On the other side, when you talk about Van, do you talk about Vancouver City, or Metrovancouver ? Metrovancouver might be easier to live, dispite of the weather. There is less homelessness, it's less expensive.

Rain, cold, windy, no sun for 30 days? Welcome to Hamburg, Germany 😛 8 months of winter, maybe 4 months of summer. Rain, rain, rain. And crazy, insane ice cold wind through the winter. But you find 1 bedroom apartments for under 800€ a month and salaries range between 35.000 - 100.000€ in general. We have high taxes (up to 45%) but health care is already included. The more I learn about Canada, the more I realize there are many similarities to Germany.

We had a business in Vancouver. There are many reasons to leave Vancouver. If you run a business where you need to lease space and have employees Vancouver is getting worse every year. 3000sqft is $10k property tax. A "standard" house worth $2million (nothing fancy) will likely set you back $10k property tax also. That's like renting ($800+ a month flushed down the toilet). Commuting through downtown (carpool) was a nightmare. Constant construction on most city blocks, every turn more construction. Plus they'd close 2 of 4 lanes on Nelson in morning rush hour... what?? There's nobody with a common sense brain left in city hall. You can't go to Stanley Park or most major recreational places on a weekend because there are 10x as many people there. Parking is crazy expensive. Sure, the beaches are beautiful and ocean is nice and the mountains look pretty. But it's lipstick on a pig. Cost of doing business, cost of running a business, cost of sitting stuck in traffic, cost of having employees sit on a bus on Georgia street for 25mins because some dolt decided to change the bus lane during morning rush hours.... the craziness just doesn't stop. Now, lets add on the recent ideas of making downtown and east to Clark St then south to Broadway a toll zone!! How about the recent announcement that ALL residential parking in the city would soon require paid permits or pay to park. What about the idea of removing at least 2 lanes on the Granville bridge for bike lanes. What?? Vancouver has the highest taxes in the province yet the city complains they are broke. What the hell are they doing with the money?? Oh wait the mayor just renovated one floor at city hall for what $700k while he asked the province for money as they are broke?? Something isn't quite right here. As a business owner, relocating anywhere about an hour out of Vancouver (or further) just makes sense. Three other business owners I know are moving their businesses out of Vancouver. Another one is so fed up with the red tape and crazy permit fees for renovating his warehouse space he's ready to pull the plug. Instead of $140 business license fee, why not move to a community where there is no business license required.... all these things add up. I've lived in Vancouver for decades and I've seen the slow decline. As more businesses move out what is the city's tax base going to be? Jumping ship was the best move ever. Before this I watched the "everyone is leaving California" videos.... it's all the same.... super high cost of living where eventually it negates the positive aspects.

Correction. There may be "some" snow in Toronto anytime from the middle of November till the middle of April but it's not that much. We moved from Guelph (about an hour west of Toronto) to Vancouver in the late spring of this year. There are a great many people that try Vancouver and then go back to where they came from because they couldn't handle the depressing weather here. At least with the snow and cold for 5 month the other side of the Rockies there's sunshine most days, and that has a tendency to make people feel a lot better. The downside I see to southern Ontario is the extreme heat and humidity during summer months.

@@nucks2233 I can't disagree with what you say. When a person either grows up in a certain place or lives there a long time they get acclimatized and it feels normal. My wife and step son are from the Philippines, and after him coming here to go to UBC he decided to stay here, ... and of course his mom wanted us to follow. They are used to rain, smog and heat, and not that fond of snow, so as with most Asians Vancouver seems like a more comfortable fit for them. As for me although there are some things I do like about Vancouver it wouldn't make my top 100 places in Canada I'd prefer to live. P.S. the Canucks did well last season and that was great to see. They're going to have a very good team going forward.

Sunshine average hours per year: Toronto: 2066, Vancouver: 1938, Victoria: 2109, Winnipeg: 2353. I would argue it's more in peoples heads as the hours of sunshine isn't that great otherwise we should all move to Winnipeg. I don't want to be in Ontario for the cold winters or the summers for the humidity. It's a personal choice. I moved to Vancouver because of the weather.

We moved here at the start of June and I'd say that's a very accurate list. I personally (my wife and step son from the Philippines think differently) would rather move to a less populated and much cheaper area of BC. Give me the snow and sunshine of a place in the mountains and I'll like BC just fine. I also hate the narrow side streets here with cars lining both sides of the road and only room for one car to get down between them, and the lack of parking almost anyplace a person goes.

Well there are a lot of larger North American cities without a lot of unsheltered homeless people. Calgary, Montreal and Quebec City, or Miami, Las Vegas, Boston and New York. When I say New York people think I’m lying. But by 2019, New York only had less than 3500 unsheltered homeless people. That means people living on the streets. That’s less than most major cities in the world, like Berlin, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Rome and etc. New York has a very extensive homeless housing program, as well as a robust rehabilitation system for substance abusers. Int total there are about 60.000 people without their own homes, but 56.500 of those have permanent shelter and do not live outside.

I been in surrey for 15 yrs excellent East Indian food! traffic not bad rents range from 800 to 2500 depending on condition of the place and how many bedrooms. The entertainment and night life is super boring! There is lots of malls and parks, busses run well skytrain runs often to Vancouver but only runs till 1am . Mostly south Asian community living in surrey they are very cliquee so if your not south Asian it can be lonely.Also there is a lot of homeless and south Asian gangs but unless you are involved you should be safe . Just don’t go out alone late at night.
