I'm a lefty, I play soccer with my left foot as well. Really gets the goal keeper confused. My mother discouraged me to be a lefty, when I was a child, so I learnt how to write with my right hand, however the left one if faster, better and always more active. I have over the years slowly and patiently tried to assign more tasks to my right side, however its not a natural instinctive process. I have to think about it, however I hope one day that my right side can be as good as my left side. I believe I will be using more of my brain when I achieve this goal.

I wonder what types of effects occur for left-handed people who are forced to be right-handed. Where I grew up in China, left handed kids are slapped on the hand and forced to use their right hand. It's probably due to some old superstition and the fact that we traditionally used ink to write and you don't want to smudge over what you just wrote. I wonder if the left-handed person who is forced to use their right hand will be disadvantaged through their life because they are technically using their non-dominate hand. Or, is this something that won't really matter that much in the long run. But I guess, these types of experiences are probably difficult to study.
@KhAnubis6 жыл бұрын
The history of this is actually really interesting. It's widely known that 4 out of the last 6 US Presidents were lefties, but before the 20's, our data on the matter is mostly shrouded by mystery, since being left-handed was practically treated as if it were an illness. In Ancient Rome, soldiers would march right-left-right-left (dex-sin-dex-sin [notice anything familiar]), since the left side was considered unlucky. As a leftie myself, I'm personally interested in when (and why) these attitudes changed. Also, I largely grew up using a right-handed mouse, but later (aged around 12 or 13) decided to switch the mouse over, to match my hand dominance, and it was a bit difficult at first, but now I find I pretty much can't use a right-handed mouse anymore.
@neurotransmissions6 жыл бұрын
That is a tough question. I imagine lefties would get used to writing with their right hand, but it may cause unnecessary stress. That is one of the possible hypotheses behind why left-handed people’s lifespans are several years shorter on average. Essentially being forced into a right-handed environment when it is not natural. But again, that’s not proven.

I think I found likely evidence that I was probably converted from being a lefty in my preschool years. Just this summer when I was digging through the family album photos because I was bored, I came across photographic evidence of me using my left hand for writing. I don't remember how old I was, I might have to go back at a later time and see if there was a timestamp on when the photo was taken. If I had to guess, I'd say maybe around age 3 or 4? Anyways, yeah I found that one photo. I don't know if there is more. My family wasn't able to bring all of our family photos when we immigrated to Canada a decade ago, so who knows. I just found it interesting, seeing as I experimented with switching my hands way back when I was in middle school even before I discovered that photo. At this point in my life, I'm already heavily left hand dominant.

Testing the genius hypothesis is fairly simple, unless things have changed since I was a kid, schools have gifted programs which to get in you have to take tests including psych evals to determine that you are a person with a high IQ, highly adaptive person and an atypical thinking process. (Which always made me think that being labeled a genius was tantamount to saying I had a mental disorder.) Anyway, a simple blind survey of these programs could determine the percentage of young geniuses that are left handed. In my program in high school, 70% of us were lefties. At the time there were only ten in the group, so to small a sample to be statistically significant, but get every program across the country and you might have a good sample that would cost very little to achieve.
@neurotransmissions6 жыл бұрын
Yes! And in fact, that exact thing has been done. Here is one of the studies we cited to support that claim. It sampled from 7688 children: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1000995
@equesdeventusoccasus6 жыл бұрын
Neuro Transmissions Not exactly what I was proposing, however it does argue for the possibility that my gifted group was an outlier rather than the norm. As I was reviewing some of the other studies I found a smaller one that appeared to be closer to what I was suggesting, but I couldn't understand what they were talking about in the abstract. It is perhaps because I don't know the correct jargon, or perhaps if I read the entire study it might make sense. What are your thoughts on: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9339338

I'm curious, I'm left-handed but right handed to right. Somehow I get quite confused about what I can and can't do. When I knit, I knit inverted(only my grandma who is left-handed could figure out how to correct my mistakes. I had to teach myself how to crochet because I can't process someone who crochets with their right hand. So I've ended up inverting it left-handed. How I've no clue?! I can't seem to even do a simple braid without getting mixed up by the end and my braid not even looking like a braid. Most can't figure out how I do most things and to be honest I can't either!? It's really getting to the point where I can't ask for help, even from left-handed people as they have said some how I've inverted what I'm doing. How is this possible? Is there any way I can learn do(or even see a right handed person or a lefty handed person do what they do and me repeat them?) things either right or lefthanded? Or see one way or the other? Most don't realize just how much one misses out fro very small things like braiding, knitting down to the bigger things like walking into something because my eyes/brain saw it on the oposite side. Thus is horrible to explain but it's so very true and discouraging and makes me look and be so very clumsy ontop of it all..PLEASE, can you explain this to me? Thanks in advance! Keep up with your awesome talks and thanks again!

So i just write it off as living in a right handed world and then just using tools and all right handed. Cause they are made for that. And thus just being from practice. But like when i write left handed i hold my pen differently, more writing up rather than sideways so i can still kind of read what i wrote

I think learning how to use my phone single handedly with my left hand first may have helped me learn to concentrate when writing with my left hand & that's because it used to be shaky but eventually I got my left arm & hand stronger & it became perfectly steady. I've also got used to doing other everyday things left handedly. This came in handy in 2022 when I broke my right hand wrist on the 21st of May and had a cast from the 23rd of May when I found out it was broke then I had an operation on the 9th of June and had K-Wires in my wrist and had a cast till the 20th of July. I got even more used to having to do everything left-handedly.

I don't know that my being left handed has anything to do with it but I keep being astonished when the circular friendship cross stitch art thing is in the background instead of the foreground and goes behind your head instead of in front of it. Probably doesn't have anything to do with my being autistic either. But the strength of the sensation is remarkable enough to comment on.

I am left handed. In context of Nepal using left hand is regarded as crime. There are so many social rules which are prohibited as well. like not eat with left hand. Not write, not worship god not offer anything to anyone. I am also facing all these issues till now. But I feel confident on my lefty habits.☺️😊☺️

TIL my dad is not ambidextrous - he's cross handed. He writes and throws a ball right handed, but plays pool left handed, for example.
@mistyhaney55659 ай бұрын
My child is cross-handed, or task specific regarding the hand or foot used. He is also nearly symetrical. He was diagnosed with autism at three and a half and part of the numerous tests included precise measurements regarding bilateral symmetry. Most people are not symmetrical, one side of the bodies extremities are slightly larger. The only asymmetrical feature he has is one earlobe being very slightly longer than the other. His task specific nature doesn't seem to have any underlying pattern, i.e. fine motor skills versus gross motor skills.

I write with my left hand, and perfect mirror image with my right hand, at the same time. It's not something I taught myself. I've been that way since I learned to write.

I'm left-handed but do most things other than writing in the right-handed way, though I don't think it's because I'm naturally "cross-handed". I think it's because all the tools, sports equipment, etc is made to be used right-handed. When I played little league the coach just told me line up on the right-handed side of the plate at bat, and that's how I learned it. When I started golfing the only clubs I had were righty, so I learned righty. When I learned to use a computer, the mouse was on the right side, so I learned it that way. When I use power tools or a rifle the only comfortable way is to do it right-handed, etc. The only things I do lefty besides writing are throwing a ball or using a racquet.

I thought right-handedness won in evolution, because left-handedness exposes the jugular and all the other veins close to the heart that make it easier to bleed out.
@neurotransmissions6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for bringing this up, Willem! Evolutionary biology can be very fun and exciting to think about. However, we need to be careful because sometimes it's just a bunch of hogwash. Hypotheses like the one you present is just not provable. So it could be that more people are right-handed because then we can more quickly protect our jugular...or someone made up a really cool story.
@willemvandebeek6 жыл бұрын
Not provable? Isn't amputation of the left arm more lethal than amputation of the right arm? I am not saying we should start amputating limbs left and right, but hospital records of accidents and even during wartime would show this, wouldn't it?

That is so interesting! Do you think you were taught that way or was it natural?
@iggyrap11416 жыл бұрын
@@neurotransmissions natural since It's always felt right to catch and throw a ball more with my right hand as for cutting I'm not sure I mean if I catch and throw with my right I'm pretty sure its the same for cutting if that makes sense

@dheerajphone91286 жыл бұрын
Cross-dominant here. Right-handed for everything except shaving (where I use one hand for each side of my face) and playing cricket/baseball (where I use my left hand to swing the bat). I bowl or throw the ball with my right hand though.
@neurotransmissions6 жыл бұрын
How interesting! Was it automatic that you'd hit on that side or did you pick it up from someone?
@dheerajphone91286 жыл бұрын
If I picked it up from someone, I don't remember who or how early in my life. But in all my memories of playing cricket, I've always stood and played the lefty way. I thought it was normal before I was told otherwise. Standing and playing the righty way feels weird and I can't aim for the ball if I play that way. It's the same for how I play table-tennis (back-hand with the right) or would hold a tennis racket or a golf club.
