Well I am American and my wife is Bulgarian/American. After America got it's latest train wreck of a president, who is making a mess of everything he touches, we decided to come here and give the American Rat Race a break. We both retired early (56) and are living off my Pension, something we could not do back home. So I can not speak about income, taxes, setting up businesses, which this channel focuses on. I can say this, we bought a house in a small village near Stara Zagora (due to being close to mom-in-law). My property taxes for the year is $9. totally unheard of. Now I do not get American fire and police service......everything, everywhere has a trade off or a Pro and a Con. You decide. We have better than American Internet, cable with too many channels, two cell phones with unlimtited everything and I pay about $60. Petrol is more expensive than home, but for us driving distances are much much shorter. We moved from Phoenix. Weather, again leaving Phoenix, so summer is 90's. Okay for us. Beach is 2 hours away. Winter (so far we've on been here 6 months) in stara zagora area is mild. Low 50's day and high 30's at night, rainy. I grew up in the midwest.........this is not winter. In the mountains clearly colder and snow. depends where you live, and yes we go to the mountains to enjoy some cold and snow. Is there corruption, tell where there is not. Govt institutions slow, yes, but I'm retired. I too feel it was weird to come here for a fresh taste of freedom, but I am seeing it. I don't need a park pass to go hiking. I ride my dirt bike like a responsible adult through the village and straight into the forest and have miles of trails. No permission needed, just act like a responsible adult and no one freaks out. I have not kept a budget or tracked our spending, but I would guess we live a pretty decent life on $1000-1500 a month. No mortage, we paid cash. I won't even touch the great COVID debate, but will say we have mostly traveled within the country and Turkey. Pro's and Con's.............all comes down to what you want. Some will like it some will hate it..........oaky.

Things like the low tax rates, membership in the EU, the possible path to citizenship, affordable real estate, affordable work force and general personal freedom are very enticing for potential emigrating entrepreneurs. When they did ask, I would just show a false certificate and say I was vaxxed back in Aus. No questions asked. I think you are totally right about how long the freedom will really last in Bulgaria. Interesting comment about how the EU could gang up on Bulgaria and change this tax haven into just another EU State. Agreed that they will try to do something. But it will have to be more radically implemented. The reason is that the vast majority of Bulgarian's are extremely cash poor while also being extremely real estate rich. So the EU would have to flip the way taxes work on real estate, but that is even problematic as BG'ers are cash poor but not willing to sell their properties. The properties work as a social safety net for them. It's extremely good protective financial model. Let's watch and see ;)

As of this writing the Ukraine/Russia war has started and I don't want to get caught in a country that could be invaded next. @@xeelaxiu9039 Bulgaria is in NATO and that makes it secure. Russia invades exactly the countries that they consider "close" or "inner circle" i.e. sphere of influence countries. Ukraine escaped the sphere of influence when they kicked out Yanukovych 2013. That is why there is war there.
@namelesscynic1616 Жыл бұрын
C'mon guys. Don't fall for the Russia wants to invade Europe nonsense. This is all part of the narrative to support the proxy war against Russia. Bear in mind that Ukraine was invaded by 190,000 troops, that was not enough to take over the country, it was meant to shock the West into agreement that Ukraine should stay neutral from NATO and was a miscalculation on Putin's part. As evidence emerged of the betrayal of the West in the Minsk Accords never being serious but a sham to allow Ukraine to arm as admitted by Merkel, a rather shocked Russia had to quickly mobilise more troops as they realised it was in fact the West that wanted a war to regime change them. I have no concerns that there is, or ever was, any attempt to to invade Western Europe by Russia.

How good is the healthcare, if we are being frank about it?
@pog519 Жыл бұрын
govt healthcare is covered by employer and costs like $7 a month (mandatory), it provides you access to a general practitioner with a tax of $2 per visit, these will give you prescription to check up with specialists for free. Small and emergency procedures are free, x-rays and most tests are free when prescribed. Common surgical procedures are free of charge (pacemakers, fracture repair, lacerations), while some will cost you $3500 (hip replacement). Private healthcare insurance can cost about $1000/year, but will cover all prescription medicine, ER, dental and most non-cosmetic operations. Most of these also cover all sorts of sicknesses, even cancer treatment and transplants (normally they have maximum of $1.5 mil return). They also fully cover MRI and other high-tech tests. There are problems especially in smaller towns, because they are not funded and they lack staff and materials there, there are villages where there are no doctors whatsoever, but as long as you stick to relatively large towns and cities, you can find decent or even great service for small or no cost. Be ware of scammers though, has happened before. Also if you have serious problem, do seek a second opinion before reacting, because some medics might not really have the qualifications they claim they do.

There's ways to optimise, but if you don't actively look to optimise it's actually either: 1. 15% + 500 eur per month (600eur/month if the new government passes the last minute taxation increase) 2. or 15+32.9% ... whichever ends up being less. Afaik (and based on what my accountant says) the 10% thing only works if you had less than 3 trades overall which is pretty impossible in crypto.

...from a 15 yr BG resident. Cost of living in the big cities is much higher than suggested in the video. Tax rate is 10%. Most people speak enough English for you to skip learning Bulgarian. I speak the language (C1-C2) and find it to be more of a parlor trick than of real use. The biggest things missed in the video are 1) the social-values & family construct is similar to USA in the 70's (a plus), 2) BG'rs are great partiers (a plus), 3) their professional arrogance is off the charts (can be a very frustrating realization), and 3) you must have a Bulgarian partner here to have a happy life.
@OffshoreCitizen3 жыл бұрын
I'm not really sure what you mean by social values? And why a local partner? How do you find socializing in Bulgaria? Is it easier than where you're from?
@yanbu0003 жыл бұрын
@@OffshoreCitizen My point is simple. The video understates the challenges in BG, and many items portrayed as simple are the opposite. My advice to anyone considering a relocation to anywhere is that they should contact locals who are like-minded to themselves who have also been residing in their target location for at least 5 years, then ask them hundreds of questions. BTW about "social values", I'm being subtle; figure it out....

As long as they speak English at least I don't see the harm. I agree to go around speaking any other language and expect people to understand you if arrogant as hell but in a more modern world, I feel like just English with a Bulgarian word here and there should be totally fine.

If Bulgaria wants to offer incentives like Turkey or Portugal did they'd flock there. Bulgaria should 1. Make dual citizenship universally available without restrictions 2. Offer streamlined long term visas based on such investments at competitive prices with Greece, Portugal & Turkey 3. Make the path to citizenship more accessible Then there'd be tons of people who'd want to come and invest. Getting residency in Bulgaria is overly cumbersome, investment visa options aren't very competitive (keeping in mind it's not a Schengen country so this makes it less attractive than alternatives so needs to be more competitive in other ways), path to citizenship is quite difficult

The fact that there's more (perceived) liberty in countries like the UAE and Bulgaria compared to western Europe and NA (for most people) really is a huge redpill. I'm currently in the process of acquiring a fully remote job as a software engineer in order to move to Bulgaria. I'm Currently located in Germany, but in the last few years I have developed a distaste for this country and how things are done (e.g. my tax rate straight out of university is 45%. Also: 50% of the government budget goes to social welfare and a huge part of the rest is wasted on ideological garbage policies. And the few useful things the money is used for like infrastructure never get done because the German government is extremely inefficient and bloated (and to make matters worse in recent years increasingly constrained by ideology) 🤔). Also: I would love to get to know other people in a similar situation as me since currently most people I know just call me crazy when I start to expound on the advantageousness of Bulgarian tax residency.

@@OffshoreCitizen I would say it's not as bad as it could have been. First of all we were lucky to have avoided a coalition of the three leftist parties (the left, the greens and SPD), which was a real possibility. The two leftist partners of the new coalition (SPD and the greens) had some "unrealistic" ideas (like a wealth tax and even higher income taxes for "top income earners"), but most of them didn't make it into the actual coalition contract. Probably mostly thanks to the third partner of the coalition, which is the liberal/libertarian party (FDP). So it seems to me like fundamentally nothing is going to change, for better or worse. Instead we are going to continue on our path of slow decline. Their pick for health minister is also worth mentioning. It's Karl Lauterbach (SPD), who is quite controversial even among his own "crowd" for making some questionable (i.e. authoritarian) demands about the handling of the covid situation. Like wanting police to be able to freely "enter" peoples homes to check for "violation" of pandemic laws. It goes without saying that he's in favour of a general vaccine mandate, which is now right around the corner by my estimation.

Bulgaria now is better than Bulgaria 10 years ago and drastically better than Bulgaria 20 years ago. Very few western countries can claim the same. Some people would rather live in a place that's bad and improving, rather than nice and getting worse by the day - at least in part because the mindset of the people there is the main driver of the direction the country is heading. If the West doesn't value personal freedoms, but you do, and you want an opportunity to achieve economic independence and you still want an EU passport with its privileges where else could you possibly go? Nowadays the West is only better for people at low-end jobs with no ambitions of owning a business or becoming exceptional at what they do, that's the sad reality.
