A lot of the people that work in these prisons, a few generations ago their people were farmers that lived off the land and were self sufficient till they got put out of business by mega corporations. They are ideal workers for the system. The only thing they are experts in (farming) doesn’t exist for them anymore. They have essentially no economy or opportunities where they live, are looked down upon by outsiders that they distrust and hate, their hometowns have been destroyed by an orchestrated meth epidemic and they are ignorant towards pretty much every single aspect of human life, outside of farming. They are obedient mercenaries, and enjoy the power they are allowed to hold over and abuse against the city slickers and minorities sent to the prisons to live under their watch.

The Guards unions are really powerful and they control a lot of votes. Those unions vote on not legalizing marijuana and having harsher penalties for petty crimes so those prisons could be filled up. In California in the past 30 years more prisons have been built then schools and more money has been spent on incarceration than education. If that doesn’t tell you something then something is wrong with you.
