Growing up playing osrs and playing rs3 now in my late 20s, I think it is the culture of the game. Grinding takes work, it eventually gets to some people to look for shortcuts. When they find a scam that turns a huge profit they could never grind out, it gets addicting. I think this is just another factor not talked about in the video

@@peterkeigwin847 Not disagreeing with you, I just believe that runescape as a grind fest game IS tailored toward all the "illegal" aspects of the game itself. People need gold to grind = gold markets. People don't want to grind to max skills = bots. People just want to be at the end game content without thousands of hours put into the game and there is a market for it that the runescape devs don't tap into. If there was a 'legal' through jagex buy option for lv90 in a skill, you bet your ass people would do it. It goes against the spirit of the game, but there are a lot of people who just want the shortcuts to enjoy. I just believe that the addicting nature of scamming being so profitable.

@ignskeletons3 жыл бұрын
I think this is true, Jagex sets very low XP rates and item drop rates compared to some similar offerings in the MMO market. For example, getting an Ely Sigil from Corporal Beast is a 1/4095 drop chance. and can be sold for nearly $1,000 USD on the black market. Whether you're a hungry Venezualan or a player who legit wnats the item for its stats/looks you may look for shortcuts like scamming. I feel like there would be less scamming if drop rates were increased, but this ofc would have negative affects like loss of value, less sense of accomplishment, etc.
@t.s.84303 жыл бұрын
@@ignskeletons Yes, it has been low rates and drops for so long Jagex could never make them better, the player base has been groomed with that "sense of accomplishment" since the beginning and removing that would be disaster for the game.

Exactly, they just want you to buy more bonds and membership to get everything you lost. Then with the pther hand threaten to rollback people because of duplicated items. Collect a check with minimal effort. I came back after 792 days away and gradually walking away again. Its pointless.

Its not really that easy to solve. Restoring items could be a nightmare to restore without causing damage to the other players involved. The main problem is Jagex does nothing if you get scammed. It is basically encouraged or just accepted as part of the game. In similar games, such as WoW, the company running the game will look at chat logs and trades between accounts (if reported) and not only ban the scammer, but they will return the items to the person who got scammed. Now of course there are still people who might try it, especially over Discord so there is no proof of the scam, but when you have a high chance of losing the items and getting banned/suspended if the person you scammed reports it, you won't even bother. This even covers things like "trust trades" where you pay money for a boost or something like that which can't be completed just in the trade window and requires you to trust the person to fulfill the service after they get the gold.

Around two years ago I stopped abyss luring on RS3. I justified it by saying that I didn't actually lie to anyone and that people would benefit by my gifts if they were to proceeded with caution and not go back to the abyss after leaving. I also justified it by saying that when people enter the wilderness they assume the risk of losing their items. I was also in a bad financial situation and wanted to quit my fast food job because it was awful. I didn't know how to give to society in order to replace my fast food job. Eventually I quit deceiving and people on Runescape and tried to give to people by reselling on eBay instead. It was successful enough that I could quit my fast food job. Now I resell on Amazon and am moderately successful at it and I flip Coogi sweaters on eBay for fun. I wish I had started reselling and providing products for people 7 years ago instead of wasting my time on Runescape but I can't change the past. If you scam on Runescape or somewhere else I challenge you look around for other ways of making money on the internet that can help people. Do some research with a basic "how to make money on the internet" KZbin search and you'd be surprised how many options there are for you if you believe in yourself and are willing to work hard without success for several months.

Super interesting perspective Crumb, one thing I think you missed was anonymity - being anonymous. When 95% of us started playing this game in our childhood we didn't have the communication tools we have now. Sure some ppl played with their friends or family and used things like AOL/MSN, but over time we (the ppl watching this video) all went solo. You scam some noob for his full rune - your mum wouldn't know. No1 can find out and therefore there is no penalty as you mentioned. I've mentioned this to you before, but I believe Runescape is the source of all modern internet hacking. Do a search on haveibeenpwned and you'll find 100s of RS fansite databases. The ex-owner of leakedsource was admin of an RS bugabuse forum. At the time, Hacking runescape fansites was not hard, stealing gold was the logical next step and this eventually led to larger external data breaches and credit card theft. But my whole point here is that IF it all started with runescape that's why we still have so many scammers. They are the script-kiddies who never made it big time but after years of practice and reducing moral standards have nowhere else to go. Loved the video more than your usual ones, would love to see more.

Let's say you befriend a guy, gain his trust and take his tbow, it's easy to say to yourself "It's just a game who cares" but the guy who lost the tbow could of been going through bad times in real life and rs is the only thing he enjoys, they don't think about it like that. Very interesting take on the issue. I do have some empathy for Venezuelan scammers, given their terrible economic situation I can’t honestly say I wouldn’t do the same thing in their shoes. I do believe the first world scammers/hackers are amongst the biggest losers in society though
@Impulse1543 жыл бұрын
One thing about the narcissism / lack of empathy - if you believe that victims to scams deserve it, due to being stupid or unprepared or whatever, then you can justify scamming them, because they deserve it.

For real when i was like 10 i had like 950k in complete junk items (probs worth 80k tops) and i told a guy that i was making a series on flipping. I got a 1m cash stack accepted in trade and told him i would stop recording and trade him it back. I logged off for 20 seconds, felt horrible, quickly logged back in and gave it all back and said i dc'd.... that was my 1 and only time scamming someone :D

I remember pulling these schemes over skype with a friend back when I was 14-15 in 2011. I think we got about a billion gold over the summer holiday in total, which was a pretty big deal back then. The profits we made gave us this kind of rush that made it feel like a game almost, like tricking people into trusting us and handing over their money or taking it into dangerous places was this addictive game that we kept playing. Eventually we went back to school and years later, the allure of ’runescape gold’ wasn’t really there anymore. It probably sounds really crazy the way I described it but I think a lot of scammers get that rush too, especially during the payoff, ie a successful lure etc. I’d feel miserable doing this for hours as an adult though hahahaha

I would say it's more of a "Online I can be anyone" rather then "my true self".
@sukidable3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the only people who are freed to be their true selves are those who are just free of their social anxities, or people who are... well, pardon the word, but, evil. Otherwise your online persona really just becomes a warped abstraction of who you really are that is largely a reflection of the culture you're immersed in.

This may be an unpopular comment but as someone who "lures" I can say that I often pretend to sell gold to sites to find what account theyre currently buying/selling on and i find gp sellers and many scammers this way. I will often once or twice a week find one of these people take some money and do a drop party for f2p players. as for why its because nothings being done about the scammers and gold buyers so I like to think in some shape way or form im helping.

As a kid, I lured a lot... like every single day for years. Made billions of GP off of it. I never sold any of the gold but had friends who made thousands. I liked the cash on the game as a kid. Definitely fucked a lot of people over. Keep in mind all of this was happening when I was 10-13 years old. When EOC hit I stopped luring, quit the game, and then came back for the 2007 version. Still play to this day and haven't scammed/lured ever again. For one I started playing the game legit, grinding max cape, etc. Two I feel like I grew out of that invisibility complex you mentioned once I got into high school. The game wasn't the same and the community I lured with was broken up through bans / quitting. At the time it was a lot of fun. We were rich in the game, we played every day together and could blow money on anything. For others in the community, it was a way to pay college tuition, bills, etc. Overall, I think I was just a young kid having fun on the game at the expense of other people. Looking back I wouldn't say I regret it because I think it taught me a lot. Like I said, it's probably been 9-10 years since I last lured/scammed anyone. I enjoy the game a lot more as an adult now.

I want to say about 2 years ago return of wilderness did come back and did stream videos. They were gambling videos. He could of been a good guy if he hadn’t been corrupted by scamming and seeing how easy it was to get gold without putting in for the grind.

Paul Robert's. I've been friends with return of wilderness since his original account. Friends with him on Facebook. He bought his mom a BMW and paid off a beach house in Thailand. He's not worried about anything. He'd also a professional guitarist that makes income.

i used to scam/lure when i was a kid.(not all the time & literally got scammed for all the money i scammed & gave the rest away and quit when osrs changed.) nowadays after all the real shit life's thrown at me, after being a highschool dropout and becoming homless and a drug addict ive actually changed my ways, nowadays i would never scam anyone and to be honest i still feel guilty about it sometimes, so i like to give away money to random noobs, makes me feel like i can somehow balance my karma becasue i was stupid when i was younger. But my reason for mentioning this is that what i kind of experienced while being on the streets was that theres kind of a rule in the place i was at: and that would be that if you let someone take something from you, it doesnt belong to you anymore. and this would be true mainly for the fact i would wake up in an alley after blacking out from being so tired and walking everywhere on the street (to get food, stay clean etc.) ;- my stuff would be stolen.. anything i owned the previous day before i passed out... so basically where i grew up, if someone steals something from you and u let them (allow urself to be scammed) then it is what it is.. however its a little different because you could always try to find the person that stole from you and go do them in (beat the fuck out of them) which is a common consequence on the streets. but anyways basically what im saying is, like even i myslef have been scammed years later on runescape when years ago i was the scammer. i liked the video i just wanted to share! karma is real guys, start doing good if uve done bad youll feel better
@danieldecastro41643 жыл бұрын
oh and if its too good to be true it definately is unless youre super lucky or something... trusting random people is a hard thing to do and it doesnt help when you do trust them and they stab you in the back, IF YOU SEEE SOMEONE ATTEMPTING TO SCAM SOMONE PLEASE HELP THE VICTIM

Interesting topic, i wonder if jagex even cares about these type of scammers/lurers, there was a guy who lured me once who literally had the name "Lots" people told me he had been doing it for at least a week, and that a week ago he had 6 tbows. The point at which he got me he had 14, so 1 tbow a day? Lol.
@Hakkapell3 жыл бұрын
Jagex does NOT ban lurers, and I say this case on my experience of luring ~15b between my partner and I, being totally open about it, being reported hundreds of times, having people post video evidence, and speaking with a former jmod... Basically, his explanation of the logic was "if someone chooses to enter a dangerous PvP area that blatantly warns you that items will be lost, that's on you." That being said, we never RWTed, used glitches or oversights by Jagex. (Think of the wildy teles that didn't have warnings) 95% of the people we got were greedy idiots thinking they were in on the gig, and the other 5% were the type you wouldn't leave alone with a glass of water for fear that they'd manage to drown.
@Xortrox3 жыл бұрын
@@Hakkapell Lmfao what a joke response from jagex, they clearly are clueless about their own game as per usual, nearly all these lures use literal glitches to make you enter those areas, e.g animation stalling. Took them a year to patch vengeance after I got lured myself once :D
@Xortrox3 жыл бұрын
@@Hakkapell As for the greed part, I kind of see that. Although it's become more along the lines of the victim playing a hero role, anti-anti luring from what I've seen.

@@Hakkapell Exactly. Basically saying in a nice way you're a fucking dumbass if you do fall for a lure 😂. was hacked yesterday have had contact with this person for a long time and actually had good conversations. but yesterday he asked me if I could post a post from his clan on the osrs forum and rate it. I already played osrs in 2007 and during this time I was cheated in the same way as it happened to me yesterday, although I actually knew it and was skeptical. I wanted to log in with a second account. Tried it a few times and it didn't work, I wrote to him that it didn't work and he said to me, oh no matter, let's go soulwars and then I put on all my armor and teleported to soulwars. After that came the logoff and I couldn't log in for about 4 minutes and when it went all my armor was away about 280m
