The Chesapeake bay is the entrance to Norfolk Naval base the largest Naval base in the Eastern US. Well during the design phase for the Chesapeake Bay bridge it was the cold war. The USA was worried about the Soviet Navy attacking the Bridge and blocking access to the base. So by putting tunnels on it at the deepest points of the channel that point became moot for the USA. That is also why there's more than 1 of those tunnels so incase we ever had gone to war with the old Warsaw pact nations. We had multiple ways to get our fleet out of Norflok and into the Altantic. We did not build a bottleneck where they could just sit at and shoot our fleet at.

The Chesapeake was done for practical reasons of going under shipping lanes vs very high spans on 17+mi stretch, but was still an engineering feat in its day

They built the bridge/tunnel combo for defense reasons. They believed that if a bridge were built and were attacked, the damaged bridge would prevent the ships from getting back out to sea. They decided to tunnel under the channel so the ships can still get out to sea if we were to ever be attacked.

Up in the New York City area you can see what happens if you don't have a tunnel. As container ships got taller and taller, they could not fit under the Bayonne bridge - so they undertook an expensive modification to increase the clearance by 64 feet.

Orwell needs rewiring, the rain is only supposed to start when the interior light comes on as you get out to load/unload, it should then stop when the light comes on as you climb back in the cab after finishing. That's how it works in the UK and we don't want you to feel short changed :) To be fair though it probably takes a bit longer to put 12 cars on and off and we do have big raindrops over here. Big, cold, wetter than a wet thing on wetday raindrops. Standing 16 foot in the air loading we're also a bit nearer the source of the damn things too!

Never fails, you wash your car or truck, then it rains. Don't ya love the sound going through the tunnel? Back in the 80's, when I had my hot rod 72 Gran Torino Sport, I loved every opportunity to go through the Hampton Roads tunnel. Crack the window open and listen to the exhaust system. Good times! Yes, I know why. As a native Virginian, I should know!

The Cargo ships and for the Navy ships could get to port. I guess it was easier to make a tunnel than build a really tall bridge. Spent a few days in Norfolk. and did drive on that road with the tunnels
@danielanderson6751
@danielanderson6751 Жыл бұрын
The tunnel is mainly there for ships to pass over because the could varry from ship to ship and depending on the size it would be unpractical to build a bridge tall enough to accommodate the ship without being a draw bridge for structural and economic reasons

That track and those video edits were spot on... you made my day! 🤘 Edit: Answer to the bridge/tunnel question... The short answer: shipping lanes. Ships need a way to the ports, specifically military and those oversized cargo ships. A tall bridge would be insane and the amount of land needed just to get up it would not be logical. As far as that derailment... I live with the 30 mile radius of that incident. Lovely isn't it?

Good morning. Most of ships company have a house away from the ship and or the base. Not to mention the ships in drydock being outfitted with the latest version of a b c x y z. The base will have ways of getting ships personnel to the ship incase of a bridge/ tunnel issue/ attack. Kinda like landlocked airbases/ stations. Itd be a cluster then it's clear up.

The CBTB is made this way so Naval ships and deep draft submarines can pass over it. The idea behind it was that if for some reason the US was attacked a bridge could block the waterway and Navy ships could not get in or out. The tunnel on the north end is mainly for commercial shipping. BTW what is the toll for a 5 axel vehicle now?. Stay safe dude.

Been over the Chesapeake bay Bridge tunnel more than a few times. By truck or motorcycle. They have some inland ports and shipyards in Portsmouth, Hampton, and of course Norfolk. Need to get the Navy ships as well as cargo/container ships in and out. Good luck trying to get over that span in high wind. I had to clear all the snow out of the bed of my pickup and put the two gas cans I forgot about in the "wind van" before I could get across. That was an interesting night. Seeing all the dry vans and recreational trailers unable to pass that night due to wind.

I love the tunnel/bridge combos. They can be slick at times though. They’re around because of high/heavy commercial water traffic. I love seeing the dual stacks & smoke coming out of both of them! I got a question for ya. When I would drive on the road and a tracty-trailer would go by me I would give him my lights to let the driver know he had room to move over in front of me if he wanted to, or, at night, turn my lights off so he could do the same. Most often the truck driver would flick his trailer lights off and on rapidly for a little bit in, (some times the four ways) I assume, an expression of gratitude for the courtesy. Do you guys still do that stuff? Even if it comes from a four wheeler?
