Thank you for this timely vid! I have a big position in FTN and LBS in my non-registered. As a former fund accountant (12+ years) I can tell you, while it's annoying QV only publishes 2x a month, most big hedge funds only publish 1x a month and super large PE funds publish quarterly. Professional fund administrators also publish T+10 business days after month end or even later normally. Bought a bit on the dip but no more. Never said this before but you've totally helped me become financial independent and also remain in Toronto with a roof over my head with KLIP and YieldMax intros I would have never heard of elsewhere. I have just retired and thus my strategy changed from growth to cash flow through collecting dividends. I bought DFN and FTN as they represented a group of the highest quality banks, thus less risk than holding individual stocks. My plan was to adjust my portfolio towards high dividend ETFs after collecting dividends from the split share funds. However "ON" the date of record DFN dropped big time. I find that some wording of the rules of the Ex-dividend date and the Date of Record are different. Do you collect the dividend if you sell "ON" the Date if Record or do you have to keep the fund until the close of the Date of Record day, meaning you are able to potentially sell on the next day ???. Is this different for different managers ??? Thanks to Adriano's video I will keep, at least the majority, of DFN and FTN and wait until the Banks regain their footing, hopefully by Christmas. Thanks for your dedication Adriano.

Adrian great points. This is the way I look at split Class A's in down markets for my personal account. Leverage provided by preferred shares is fixed (a constant dollar amount, not variable / % of NAV like many leveraged investments), which basically means that as NAVs and share prices for Class A's go down, there's higher leverage and more potential for Class A's to jump strongly when markets eventually take an upturn as they have in the past. I've been in this business for long enough (since 2006) that I now start to get kind of excited when Class A's start declining like we're seeing now. Not a strategy for the faint of heart - market bottoms can't be timed, you may get some more downside before the upside - but it's been a very good capital gains strategy for me.

A lot of the split shares are trading at a premium so when times are tough people sell off. When the markets good they buy in creating the premium. Just like Adrian said. That's the biggest reason as to why they tank. If your not getting the dividend you make no money and the stock is going to crash so they sell if there's even a chance of a dividend miss.

It's because Class A shareholders are in partnership with Preferred shareholders (anywhere between 40/60% to 60/40% depending on the fund). So Preferred shareholders receive their guaranteed amount (usually from the dividends paid by the underlying stocks) while Class A shareholders get 100% of the growth/shrinkage of the fund even though they only own 40-60% of the fund.

#1 Tip for Split Shares : DON'T buy when the Premium is past 10% - 15%. I have taken a massive haircut on Splits because I bought at 30%, even higher 😅, Premiums. How to Check Premium : Stock Price / NAV * 100 = Percentage you're paying above or below the Intrinsic Value of the fund. E.g. : DGS is trading at 4.65 NAV is 4.80 4.65 / 4.80 * 100 = 96% So, the Stock Price of DGS is 96% of its actual worth. A bargain. I screwed up and bought my Splits way too high. Learn from my mistake. At least I won't be selling now, but paying so much and not getting Distributions for months on end hurts. I'm out of Splits as soon as I can recover my heavy Stock price loss. Missing Distributions for months is not why I do Income Investing. Question : If everyone comes to my conclusion, and drop Splits, will the Stock Price never recover? Oh dear...will a bunch of people (including myself) be left holding the bag on Splits?
@PassiveIncomeInvesting Жыл бұрын
i think that is a fairly good TIP, but remember its personal opinion also. i have bought RS when the Premium was more than 15%. again the stock price DOES NOT MATTER . eventually people come to their senses. the more people SELL the more the Veterans BUY and typically HOLD so it takes shares out of circulation. so when people start buying again, it will go up. supply and demand 101 because remember there is a set number of shares
@belovedsurfing7210 Жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian. Sorry for taking so long to reply. Appreciate you taking the time to make one as always. You're right. It's just my Personal Opinion (and yours as well often expressed in your video), but I think it's a good rule of thumb. I just have to disagree with you on the Stock Price though. Sure, buying DFN at $8, and it going down to $4.60 or whatever it is now, likely won't be a permanent condition, but it's chances of recovering back to that $8 price are unlikely. Why? It's share price has continued to depreciate since its inception. The higher the price you buy in, the lower your Total Returns. Buying Splits when the price is low just makes more sense. You get a higher Total Return. And, when there are so many great CC ETF's out there, that you have introduced many of us to Adrian, what reason is there to buy Splits when they're above 15% premium unless the Yield is ridiculously high? It hurts me if people don't buy DFN or DGS as I've been killed on these funds, but I get it. When they recover (hopefully back to the highs I bought them at) I'm out. I think many people feel the same. Regardless, thanks for the great videos and information as ever Adrian.

I waited until DGS missed a couple dividends before buying 6000 shares at a discount to Nav. I don't care if it misses more monthly dividends as I know when it finally does pay I'll more than make up for it in spades with some major capital gains on the share price. It's the only split fund I have now as I sold my DFN a year ago and then in the last couple months I sold all my FTN & even BK (both at a nice profit). With BK I purchased BKCL which is paying a higher dividend so it was an easy decision to make last month. With the sale of FTN I bought a good amount of HMAX & DGS. Like Adriano says it's ALL about the Nav........ DON'T buy it when it's selling at a high PREMIUM (that was another reason why I sold my BK & FTN).
@henryhonda8408 Жыл бұрын
It's also a good time to buy some DFN but myself I would wait until it misses another dividend payment. If that happens the share price will be much lower and the slight premium it's still selling at will most likely disappear. I'll never buy another split fund at a premium price even after they all recover when the stock market improves. There are so many great new ETFs with high yields so why take on risk with split funds. I'll only buy distressed split funds like DGS & DFN etc when they miss payments.

Yes, ENS will have the same issue if their NAV drops below $15, but the NAV in that fund is normally quite high. However, I don’t like how Middlefield updates the NAV on their site. I can’t find it stated anywhere other than in their fact sheet which was last updated June 30, unless I am just blind and can’t see it. Lol. Anyway, at that time the pref NAV was $10.13 and class A $11.96 for a total NAV of $22.09. Thus it would have to drop a lot to get below $15.00, but obviously not impossible. It is simply panic selling. I have large positions in BK and ENS. High interest rates from the FED and fear of a recession has seen tonnes of money pour out of the market or into a limited number of tech stocks. Also, October is historically the worst month in year for the market. People are panicking and dumping their positions. Enbridge and the Big 6 Canadian banks are not going to zero. However, also look at the underlying assets. The biggest holding in BK is Royal Bank (RY), and it is really trending down right now. There is fear in the banking sector related to high interest rates and possible increases in mortgage defaults. With Enbridge, they just spent billions to buy natural gas companies in the US. Even though this really diversifies their assets, some investors didn't like it and the stock took a hit, which forces ENS down.

Welcome guys. He is your number one source of destroying your family wealth. All this nonsense and you could have just been in xeqt or vfv and not have to deal with all this BS. Imagine never have watched his videos in the past and not invested in what he recommended! Remember 1-2 years ago how he pushed how amazing these split share corps were and how amazing the 18% yield was?

thanks! spoken like a real man. blaming some1 else instead of taking responsibility for your own actions and decisions. you clearly STILL do not understand how these funds work and their risks. is that my fault? or yours? since you seem to have low intelligence let me spell it out for you: i do not recommend anything, i provide my opinions, show people how I INVEST and educate on income oriented funds

Yet another respectful comment from the Oracle of Panama. Better alternatives to splits have been out for months yet he still promotes this stuff. Ask yourself does Adriano really care about his audience or his KZbin and sponsorship revenues!!

@@billlumley9493his interviews are the most soft ball answers you could possibly ask and always cuts In to say I totally agree. Would not expect more when it’s a paid advertisement. Gotta remember nobody is sponsoring ads on his channel for free. He doesn’t even have the balls to come out and say my bad guy you down 50-60% on a fund I pushed. His core holding Hyld for example is hemorrhaging cash. Hyld buys and sell out of underlying etfs every couple month. Are down nearly 30% in two years and underwater still if you count the dividends reinvested. Meanwhile snp500 up 18% this year nasdaq 40%. I stand by my statement, The number one source of your wealth destruction. Has he ever once asked Hamilton why in the holy hell is your MER 2.5% higher than most mutual funds. Has he ever explained dividends are just simply your own money coming back to you, it’s not free money. I wouldn’t expect him to ask anything about CC since he has stated he has never traded an option himself.

Folks, the market is simply panic selling right now. Remember also that September is historically the worst month in the year for stocks. In 2020 I bought DFN after the market crash when it was not paying a distribution. A couple of months later it began paying and I was collecting 200.00 per month. Then I sold DFN in 2022 for a profit. I'm thinking of buying it again even though it isn't paying and repeating the formula. Note also the quality of the stocks within the funds. The top holding in GDV is Apple, the king of the tech stocks. BK holds the top 6 Canadian banks. Are the banks going to zero? No. When the interest rate hiking cycle is over and some cuts start, money will pour back into the market as fear is replaced by greed. If your risk tolerance is low, focus on ETFs and cash funds like HISA to balance out your portfolio.

Moreover, banks perform better in a high-interest rate environment since their margins of lending money are higher. However, the problem is that they have to hold more cash in reserves for the possibility that more people will default on their mortgages. That means the banks will have less money to increase their dividends. But once things stabilize with fewer defaults, the banks' cash reserves will eventually be released to shareholders, and the banks will continue to make higher margins. Banks never lose in the long run!

Ditto....... the time to buy split funds is when it misses dividend payments. Then sell when it pays a dividend (rinse & repeat). I even made money a couple times at the start of the year with FFN doing this.

did you add up all the dividends i 2 years. only counting the capital and ignoring the income is nonsense . also you only lost it if you sold it
