Why are students' lives SO different in China?!

I do agree that China is pushing students way too far in terms of education. I often hear about how Chinese students receive the most amount of homework out of any country, but I didn’t think it was this bad. Singapore is also known for being one of the best in academics, and as a Singaporean, we definitely have a lot of pressure placed on us, but UNIFORMS WITH CHIPS AND CCTVs? That is too far. Give these kids a break. There is no point forcing them to become the best if they can’t even take a rest. They are humans, not academic machines. Cut them some slack.

As a Chinese person from Thailand, I'm beyond grateful that my great grandparents moved to Thailand and started their families here. I can't even imagine what it's like to literally wear a device that tracks your brain all the time. That's just invading the child's privacy and it could be a stressful thing especially for kids with ADHD/ADD/Autism and other developmental disorders.

As someone who studied in China before, i can first hand tell you that the education system has many flaws, we are put under constant presure of being “the best” at everything and thats what most parents expects of their children, we have lesson almost 8hours a day and some even up to 10, plus bullying is also a major issue cus even if you report it, chances are the teachers dont give a sh-, but what i hate the most was that the schools forces you to memorise a sht ton of stuff and the teachers are allowed to hit you 💀

As a Filipino student, there's a small amount of expectations my mom gives me when it comes to school, but she doesn't force me to study 24 hours. She understands that the way for me to learn is in my own pace and she encourages me to have fun because, as she said, you can only be a youth once. Not to mention the school she enrolled me to encourages independent learners. We have an aloted day on where there will be no teacher, but they expect us to study on our own.

As a student who used to study in local schools in Hong Kong, I can confirm that they rely on memorization and not critical thinking. And honestly this is the reason I switched to an International School. The amount of stress was just unbearable, imagine having to arrive to school at 7:55am, going to bed at midnight due to studies and tutorials, having 6 chapters of Math in an Exam, Chinese Literature (ancient language) that is useless nowadays, needing to know what the author wants to tell us (I often end up questioning people how will teachers know the answer when they're not the author), students not knowing why they have to study those, teachers that can't even mark exams or unit test papers correctly, Physics formulas that you have to memorize without knowing how do people come up with that. (Just my experience in a local school) And if you ask me who to blame, it's the teachers and the Education department. If the teachers want their students to concentrate in class, then just make the lesson interesting, keep the students engaged. And don't get me started on the Education department, it has so many problems with it. One of them is the HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education) examination, you literally have to memorize 12 Chinese passages and answer questions for Chinese, that often leaves me and my friends wondering "Why do they have to determine our jobs or Universities based on 12 useless Chinese passages?" Like if you want to be a doctor, what does it have to do with what you learn in Chinese, English and Math? And why not grade us based on our dream jobs? Not to mention that the local Chinese students are literally suffering because the Chinese in Hong Kong was just too hard, and yet, the Education department didn't even reflect on it

As a formal Hong Kong student who moved to sydney, I can relate to this. However, note that all the education systems (except Finland) also have the problems that you pointed out, but it's just that Hong Kong is worse. Schools never prepare us for the future, and 90% of the knowledge they teach is useless or you would never use it in real life. Unlike Western countries, Hong Kong doesn't even use a laptop for school, so we wouldn't know the basic ICT skills like Word, Powerpoint, etc. They are also too exam oriented. We only have exams and there isn't any assignment which counts towards our grades. For example, we never learn how to write a scientific report for science, which is an essential aspect of science. We only do exams for every subject. However, a good thing about Hong Kong is that they teach better maths. Not only the maths are better than Western countries, but the textbooks and the way of teaching it is more clear and more logical. The maths textbook in sydney is much worse than Hong Kong. They give you questions that you haven't learned throughout the textbook. But still, Hong Kong is too stressed, and I also hope that the Education Bureau would do something to fix the system. It's so flawed that even the heads of the Education Bureau put their kids into international schools while trying to persuade parents to put their kids into local schools and embrace the flawed local education system to the parents.

Same i am studying at hong kong now and i can assure that there are stacks of homework and school time averaging 8 hours a day, and i am not even counting after school activities and revision for exams. As you pointed out, i seriously do not understand why we need to memorize and study useless stuff that we probably will never use ever again. It's just for university. Even funnier, is that those stuff are HKDSE curriculum. The Education department is definitely the one to blame. Even my parents told me memorizing is the key to success in exams. Now you see how ridiculous the education system is. And unfortunately for me, i was unable to study at a international school because my parents thought that the avaliable ones have too low banding. I think it's kind of the same with the Viet education system, of course not to extreme measures like these, but from what I've experienced, these things you said relate a lot to me. They force you to memorize a shit ton of stuff, repress opinions, put under constant stress of being a "flawless student", yadayadayada,... Same with how @VEN.3x3 phrased it, arriving to school at 7:45, going to bed at midnight due to studies and tutorials, memorizing 6 chapters for an exam, except Viet students just learn normal-ass literature thats not going to be relevant in normal day-today lives, same with those teachers, they "supposedly" know the answer when they're not even the author. Also from my personal experience, the "teachers" are very unreasonable and usually abuse their power against us to blame the students for literally the smallest things ever, we don't admit it, immediate "Bản kiểm điểm" for us. As a person who studied at an international school in Shanghai, even I was not fully aware of this. I just heard rumors of schools treating students poorly, and teaching them to hate Japan and the U.S. Before this, I only knew about the heavy workload and stress. But do remember, this is only some schools in China. Edit: Most other schools's problems are just heavy workload and some stress when it comes to high school exams. Though I know that stress isn't good, their situation a lot better to the types of schools shown in this video (coming from a priviliged asshole who can't even speak chinese at a high level). And before anyone says anything, yes, VPN is illegal in China, but the law itself isn't enforced, unless you are seen directly using a VPN in front of high-ranking officials.

I am an international student in China, and the normal Chinese schools really stress the kids out, it's really different from the international education that I felt, I used to go to a normal school, and I was dismissed around 8pm, homework was usually done until 12pm, and I was required to be at school at 7pm the next day, and I could only get a few hours of sleep a day, and the weekends were full of extra classes, which made you numb. And there were tests almost every day as the curriculum moved very fast. Chinese education is much more than that, and it pains me to say that last week three students in my area ended their lives because of the long periods of time without weekends and breaks, and I'm glad that I'm now experiencing an international education, otherwise I wouldn't be able to imagine my life.

As a Filipino student who studies in an international school in Qatar, my parents wanted me do good in school, and they don't pressure me to always study. They also help me understand lessons that I'm having difficulty with and are like teachers to me. And they let me relax whenever I'm done with my homework. This is really sad to watch that the fact that china's education system is pressuring student to become "perfect" and giving the lack of freedom is horrible. As a formal Hong Kong student who moved to sydney, I can relate to this. Schools never prepare us for the future, and 90% of the knowledge they teach is useless or you would never use it in real life. Unlike Western countries, Hong Kong almost never use a laptop for school, so we wouldn't know the basic ICT skills like Word, Powerpoint, etc. They are also too exam oriented. We only have exams and there isn't any assignment which counts towards our grades. For example, we never learn how to write a scientific report for science, which is an essential aspect of science. We only do exams for every subject. However, a good thing about Hong Kong is that they teach better maths. Not only the maths are better than Western countries, but the textbooks and the way of teaching it is more clear and more logical. The maths textbook in sydney is much worse than Hong Kong. They give you questions that you haven't learned throughout the textbook. But still, Hong Kong is too stressed, and I also hope that the Education Bureau would do something to fix the system. It's so flawed that even the heads of the Education Bureau put their kids into international schools while trying to persuade parents to put their kids into local schools and embrace the flawed local education system to the parents.

I’m a Chinese American, I lived in china till I was 5. Lemme just say, it was really hard. They discipline there kids at a very young age. Coming into the u.s (adopted). I already knew most table manners. They would also only give u 2 meals or 3 meals but little amount in the orphanage. Not to mention I only had 1 pair of clothes. I had a heart disease so it made it really harder for me.

Guys..as a hk student I cannot confirm this is true.the videos you have saw are actually shorts from Chinese platforms,not all schools have headsets and those things for posture.But,I can confirm that Chinese student love to compete as they have a lot of pressure.there are lots of homework and strict teachers,but they have not gone that far where there are chips on ALL uniform.The videos where you have saw the little girl play ping pong,she was crying out of pressure,but her coach must have already told her that she can do it.The speaker might sound strict,but you can’t just let the girl pause the competition when there is a whole bunch of audience?And for the other little girl crying because she couldn’t play,this really has nothing to do with the school,it’s the parents.But still,Chinese students have WAY lot more pressure than us.And there might be some punishments like running laps,standing in the corner,or even getting hit.But I am very sure that these actions are illegal.But there are also little kids like what you guys call ‘Sephora kids’ online making videos of themselves like they are an influencer or smth.These strict things can occur and depend on the place in china.If you are in a more developed place in china you are more likely to be ‘controlled’.No way you actually read to here 😂❤

A Vietnamese myself, I already feeling a lot of pressures from learning in academies to academies just to try and get a scholarship somewhere abroad. I can say no one else will enjoy this type of pressure. I have to learn English, math, literature. Those 3 subjects I studied each one 3 times each time 3 hours per week. And near future I be learning German and French. You know the pressure is really high when your whole calendar is just studying and studying, homework and homework. Just imagine have to walk home after school, can't take a shower nor dinner and go directly to another campus to learn the same thing you learn at school but more harder and advance. This is just a bit of what most Vietnamese been through, Im lucky because I study in a non public school. If we take a look at South Korea, it another hell on Earth, one of my friend he have to study from 6 am every morning until 2 am the next day before he can go to sleep.

It's not as extreme in India but the students here do have some unhealthy amount of pressure on them. It actually comes down to the population and the job market. The competition is extreme and you need to take extreme measures to get a job better than other people.

As a Chinese student myself, I wouldn't believe all this information. The truth is that students want to get into good universities because in China if you don't, life will be hard. Parents try their best to prepare their child, making them learn things beforehand. But this causes a ripple, so everyone has to do so to become the best in class, and so go to a good Uni. The problem isn't China, it's the parents.

I agree tho, I'm chinese but i was born in Italy and when I was a little girl still going to kindergarten my parents sent me to China to learn because they thought they would work in Italy to earn more and then come back to China forever, but I was so "emo" because in kindergarten I couldn't do math (we already learn when we are little kids) and I used my fingers cuz I suck in math and the teacher yelled at me then I cried so bad lol. As a Chinese person, I can also quite say that Chinese schools are pushing their students too far. I study at en international school, not a Chinese school, and my schooling is uncomparable to how harsh those schools' school life is. They have so little leisure time that they can't even enjoy holidays anymore. I've never seen a Chinese student who enjoys school, unlike me and some students at my school. that’s pretty tense, but my dad makes me learn on Saturday. First he makes me read chinese on his laptop for 30min, then he makes me read a Chinese book (which dad reads most of it but I still read some sentences) for 40min (it felt like 40.) then he makes me do his really hard math questions that are for like 6th grade Canadian that usually takes me 2 days. Indonesian here. I can say, the education system here are not too strict but not too free either, it depends on how the teacher teaches but there are some basic rules and additional rules, but I can surely tell you that attentiveness and discipline can change from the teacher itself and not how the rules or teacher applies tools. Seeing China progress in a way that is really concerning and pretty much controlling, they apply these things to the children without seeing the side-effects. While it's working, it is certainly risky and controlling. It's just an example of: "If you can, doesn't mean you should."

There isn’t really much to learn to be honest. I was taught to just memorize. Even math! We have to memorize it too. But do I understand how the equations work? Lol no. It is like I know to build a home but can’t make foundation. I learned foundation in the US because if you do pay attention, they actually teach you the “how” to math. That is why we need balance. I am a Hong Kong student. The pressure in the schools are tough. Sure, we aren’t monitored 24/7, but in my class(the ‘smartest’ kids), we constantly feel the pressure. Once, I got a 93 in English and a 96 in Chinese. And what did I do? I cried. Loudly on the way home. The system here is not as bad, but it’s tough for kids like us. Our teachers think we are geniuses, and expect us to get at least 80-90%. I think I’m scared of algebra now because I can’t understand it, unlike most kids in my class.
