The Lakers have taken a ridiculous amount of free throws compared to their opponents this season, especially since the league apologized for blowing a call that would've sent LeBron James to the line to beat the Celtics in January. Coach Nick goes deep into the footage to examine whether there is a conspiracy to help the Lakers get to the line so much more than their opponents

Three things can be true at once: 1) FT disparity is not always unfair, as if teams always foul the same amount each night. 2) Drives per game do not correlate with FT attempts per game. Thank you for pointing this out 3) You have been weirdly defensive of the refs lately. I don’t know anyone in favor of verbally abusing them so I’m not sure why you’ve picked that straw man when coaches/players/fans just want to see refs stop T’ing guys up so quick.

There wouldn’t be as much of a discrepancy if other teams had better defense. Lakers have the number one defensive rating for a reason they are good at defending without foul. Other teams think they should just get calls when they don’t deserve it.
@dreamingwhales
@dreamingwhales Жыл бұрын
@@King-rudy you might be right. maybe lakers has been so much better than all other teams in defense so that it shows in numbers of FTs. But referees can make the same play either a good defense or a bad one. It's hard to say they got fewer fouls because they have better defense, or they are given the status because they got fewer calls when you just focus on the numbers of fouls each team gets. One might have to campare each call(and non-call) both team get in a game to say for sure they were consistent or not, but it's close to imposible. Maybe some AI tech can do this one day I hope. @@Lazyfoal you don't know what the "jordan rules" were if you think it had anything to do with the refs. it was the rules the pistons had for defending jordan. which unfortunately for the rest of the league turned jordan into the GOAT as he improved his game to the point those rules meant nothing to him anymore. those rules were never hard and fast rules but they boiled down to, Never give him the same look twice (vary your defensive coverages), make him go left, always have a help defender to get two bodies on him, always get contact when he drives to the hoop. and unofficially rodman or dumars always be glued to him. Watching jordan play the Pistons with the "jordan rules" you'll notice he got better and better each year against them as he developed his game to surpass them. He became a smarter passer, developed his left to be as good as his right, added more tricks to his bag, and finally, got physically stronger so he wasn't worn out by the physical play. As a result when the Bulls finally broke through you could tell the pistons no longer could contain jordan, and he crushed them with ease. but it took a lot of hard work. unfortunately for the league, the pistons were a grind stone that honed jordan from an all timer into the GOAT with no weaknesses left in his game.

Listen. We all know lakers has no shooting outside, thats why it just makes sense for them to have a ton of freethrows since they always look to go inside. But what frustrates alot of nba fans is the blatant disparity in calls. Please keep in mind that we dont have problem with lakers freethrows, but the bs fouls and calls on their favors. Alot of times the opposing team will be on early penalty in a quarter which results to a.) destroy their pace and momentum b.) gets their players, sometimes their star player, in early foul trouble c.) which means lakers shooting more freethrows d.) which will also leave them no choice but to defend softly and will result to lakers easy basket

@@tacen28this is the problem: they were allowed to play more physical than everyone else and not get whistled. You have to be consistent in your officiating. Warriors fans know this all too well with Steph. Steph gets absolutely hammered constantly, especially on drives. But he shoots often no more than 7 free throws a game if he's lucky. Dudes like Schroeder and Reaves were literally doing nothing but dribbling at the basket with no intention of taking a shot just to get free throws. If you call touch fouls on one team, it needs to be called when it happens on the other side. Because the Lakers were benefiting from touch fouls that weren't being called when they did the same thing. THAT'S what annoys people more than anything.

If they're fouls for Reaves and /or the Lakers, they should be fouls for EVERYONE. Watching all the fouls Reaves drew, if Steph got that whistle, he'd shoot 8-12FTs per game. Oh come on this ain't even close. Tiniest contact is justified as free throws its pretty ridiculous looking at the stats and when they ask 'why Lakers get so many free throws?' Lakers say, 'we play physical and drive to the basket.' But driving to the basket doesn't cause free throws right so that don't make sense. Even if every play was justified (its not) and even if they never missed a call (they will) its still an incredibly boring style of play. The idea the NBA is doing it like some kind of conspiracy is patently ridiculous but they need to have serious standardization for both teams.

Divencenzo got an offensive foul call for the same play basically on a layup the other day. Call it what you want but it's objectively bs. Reaves literally admits to watching flop artists and modeling his foul-baiting game after them and is getting rewarded for it. I'm sensing some real Laker-fan bias Coach. Lakers ft disparity is wild. If you go through every play, I’ll concede there MAY have been contact. The problem is the rate at which the refs will call it varies by team. A plausible foul call on specific types of plays will get it X% of the time, whereas the Lakers will get it X+Y% of the time. We’re all here arguing what Y equals. Many people who have been watching closely would say it’s significant. The types of calls the Lakers get other teams simply don’t get at nearly the same rate. There’s already precedents for this concept, it’s not even a conspiracy: “superstar” calls, making sure stars don’t get into foul trouble, allowing Shaq to bully players when 3 decades prior it was an easy offensive foul call, LeBron dipping his head and throwing elbows on drives. There are other examples of this. The team FT differential seems way too egregious and convenient given the Lakers have been on life support all season. I do want to add one thing about the video because Coach Nick makes good content. He described a stat where the Lakers don't get that many more attempts when adjusted for pace. The problem with this interpretation is that it assumes they're deserving of that rank. If they got the same whistle as the rest of the league I'd reckon they'd be in the middle of the pack, NOT 1st. They're barely 1st when they shouldn't even be in that conversation to begin with.

I'm not surprised at all if anyone thinks the Lakers get a friendly ref bonus in games, mainly because they are such a large market team and it would be bad for ratings if they weren't involved in the season somehow. I've even seen people argue they did some questionable things to completely overhaul their roster, without having basically any trade assets or losing anyone on their team (outside of Russ). However, it is very hard to prove this, outside of seeing the occasionally questionable decision in actual games, we can only guess.

No. The Lakers are using a strategic game plan. They get their opponents into the foul penalty and capitalize on the free shots. The Lakers can get 4 shooting fouls per quarter (that’s 32 FT’s) Any extra foul is 2 free shots at the penalty stripe. The Warriors averaged 23 fouls per game which is a 14 shot discrepancy at the line. If they only fouled 12-18 times it’s zero extra FT’s. Add in the shooting fouls by the Lakers against a team that’s 3rd in the league in fouls & it’s a weakness to exploit in the playoffs. Which the Lakers did.

The Lakers freethrow disparity is usually not just them having a ton of freebies, but also about the same calls not being made against the opposing team, that are in fact called for the Lakers. So, similar fouls that are called differently for each team. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen once or twice a game. I notice this and it makes me dislike the team a lot. They basically always seem to have 3 extra players on the floor wearing the grey and black. It also frustrates the opposing team, causing them to get techs or make even more fouls in frustration for not getting their (rightful) calls. However, this is only a small part of it, as the disparity is much larger than a few bad calls a game. For what seems to cause the extreme freethrow disparity, I see 3 main reasons: 1 - The Lakers attack the paint and the basket, a lot. They are often forcing and initiating the contact. They have an abnormal amount of physical, bruiser guys that do not shoot very well, so they need to get close and be physical to score. This results in more freethrows, as being on offense near the paint generally gets you more calls. The 2 main stars on the team are not great shooters and they make the most attempts in a normal game, causing way more rim attempts than any other team. 2 - The Lakers can act a lot better. I'm serious about this, its not like they're flopping a ton, they just react more on everything that can be a foul. They physically throw their head back, flail their arms, or drop dramatically to the floor. (sometimes all of that) While it might still be a foul that causes a player to do this, it might not have been called for a player that isn't overly dramatic in his reactions. Normally a team might have one guy that does this, but on the Lakers: Davis, Reaves, even Schröder and ofcourse Lebron are all really good at this, causing them to get more calls that otherwise might not have been noticed. 3 - Their defensive scheme. As coach Nick said, they are forcing guys out of the middle, causing them to foul less on defense. I hadn't noticed this myself, but I did notice they played really tight defense without fouling, as even during replays I couldn't detect the actual fouls in slowmotion and I had to give the defending laker the benefit of the doubt more often than I expected. In short, however frustrating and annoying it can be to watch a Lakers game being decided by many referee calls, a lot of it is actually correct. Still, I think it is demoralizing for the other team. The game should not be decided by fouls or freethrows, but by playing good basketball. Gaming the system by being overly dramatic, or forcing unnecessary contact around the basket (I'm also looking at you Mr. Antetekoumpo :) ) is not exactly the most interesting or beautiful basketball. I much prefer the fast hand off and run system the Kings use or the great cuts from the Pelicans, or even a solid iso play by one of the league's stars.

Calling a foul is not a science, but in the eyes of the beholder. I can't remember who it was, but one player who played against Lebron for many years complained that he got so many calls. Then, the same player ended up on the same team as LeBron and started to complain about the no-calls LeBron got. I think the two hardest players to referee in the history of the NBA is Shaq and LeBron. Shaq got fouled so many times without any calls. Eventually, he got used to it and kept dominating. LeBron is so big and strong on his drives that opponents keep slashing and trying to push him away without people realizing how much contact there is .LeBron, understands this, and that gives him an advantage. Since the refs do call contact on his drives, he can sometimes get away with just running straight into his smaller or weaker opponents and force them out of his way before scoring similar to Shaq on the low post. I know it's hard to referee because the refs have to look at the game at full speed. Despite this, I think that the league has to do something about the complaining. It is poor entertainment. I would suggest that the league reinstated the direct player inbounds rule so that teams can punish players who stay and complain like the 2005/2006 suns did.

Coach, the league has been in an absolute downward spiral since Silver took over. The officiating absolutely being a part of that spiral. Games are called in the interest of the most money being made possible. The Lakers have a huge fan base so naturally the league is making sure that they are shooting 100 more free throws than the next highest FT shooting team. I know that the Lakers would be a top 5, even top 1 team without help from on high, but not by such a laughable, obvious differential

So the excuses you trying to make for the NBA Refs calling every foul on Reeves, but not calling the same fouls on a All Time Great in LeBron is ridiculous. Unlike the NFL who rigged games over the radio performing a whole charade in front of millions the NBA can only rig their games base on Refs foul and Non-Foul calls (Facts). The True Statistics say if a NBA Player especially Black NBA Player does something the NBA doesn't like they from then on get less foul shots and that's proof the NBA is not totally rigged like the NFL, but NBA is biased (Truth). #FBAscension
