Europe is mad. Thrown away more than a century of built-up competitive advantage, heritage, design and more, as we now compete with China to produce electric vehicles (i can't call them cars) with no style, no class, no personality. The distinguishing features seem to be who has the best touchscreen (should you be touching screens instead of driving?) or who can possible fib most about how far the contraption can go between charges. I just watched a film of a 95 year old man being taken out in his old cars (a Lotus and a Porsche) that he had had for a combined 70 years or so. The cars had both been brought back to beautiful condition. The elderly gentleman loved to be taken back in time with a short drive in these fantastic machines. Flawed most ICE cars may have been, but with character, with workmanship, engineering et al. Do you imagine a man 30 years from now sitting in a BYD or such and reminiscing about the great times he had enjoyed with it? Build Your Dreams? Buy Your Downfall more like it, that is what the European consumer is being pushed to do. By European government. Mad.

The trouble is Western economies have been plundered by politicians and their oligarch masters for decades. Instead of investing in industry at home they've invested far less in China and used the balance to speculate on markets for personal gain. We are now at the point where the only profitable industry in the US is the arms industry resulting in endless wars. The consequence is we are rapidly becoming poorer and more dependent on plundering other countries. China, on the other hand, has used the investment as a springboard for its own technological and industrial growth resulting in 700 million of its population being lifted out of poverty in the last 20 years. Of course, China is not perfect, but neither are the West and unless we get a significant change in how are economies are manipulated we are all in very serious trouble.

In the push for EVs over ICE vehicles great care needs to be taken over allowing the Chinese flooding the UK market with EVs in order to obtain price parity with ICE cars. China was prevented from having their equipment and software within defence communication systems as it was considered a threat to the security of the UK. However the government appear to be happy to allow them to infiltrate the UK via their cars that are fitted with software that could do immense damage to the UK. Should China ever decided they want to invade Taiwan (or anybody else) at the first sign that the UK and the west show signs they want to take action China could/would hack the software bringing all Chinese EVs possibly other EVs and maybe ICE vehicles to a standstill, who knows what software they have embedded in equipment in these cars. We are walking into a potential catastrophic situation it will be too late when they have decimated the European car industry. I also wonder how much Chinese software is embedded into renewable energy equipment, doesn’t the UK buy all the solar panels from China. If the Chinese spy who was close to Prince Andrew, is considered a problem why not thousands of Chinese cars and suspect software.

I went in for tea one night and told my Dad "You've got eight cars out there", I was about ten years old so this was 1980ish. We had a council house on the corner so he sold cars for pocket money and most of them were Renault or Citroen. They were cheap to buy and easy to sell because they just worked. He wouldn't buy and sell Ford or BMW because they were worth what they were worth and not as reliable as people think. Dad was an old school mechanic, listen to an engine and tell you what was wrong.

My nephew has bought a Chinese motorbike. He had a Chinese built 50cc scooter beforehand. The scooter was called AJS but nothing like the AJS brand of the past. The scooter in my opinion was not very well built. The motorbike he has now is a 125 sport looking machine that looks similar to the Yamaha YZF-R125. Granted, the Chinese machines are considerably cheaper but I don't think the quality rivals that of German or Japanese machines. The Japanese machines seem to hold their value much better. I am aware, Chinese motorbikes have slightly improved over the last 20 years but I would still not buy one. Another thing I've noticed with Chinese brands is over the last 20 years, many have come and disappeared. I wonder why.

I won't have any EV's at the moment due to rapid evolution meaning massive depreciation, and the fact that even the top Euro brand ones are seemingly unfixable by main dealers. But we do have 3 Chinese MG petrol cars in family, 7 years old, 5 years old and 3 years old, none have needed more than air in the tyres and screen wash since new. The 5 year old one has just had a trade in offer that means in has only lost £2075 since new. All the engine work and chassis work was done by ex MGR engineers in the UK , and one of the issues with many newer European cars are serious engine problems,( wet belts etc), and Stellantis is now so big that quality appears to have gone out of the window, just like British Leyland all those years ago. I would love to buy British again, but will have to put up with my old Classic MG for weekend fun.

It was a straight knock off of the Honda cb125rs HOWEVER the cb125rs had a bad points ignition and a terrible disc brake that would seize up every winter. The Jinlun had a reliable CDI ignition and a different brake calliper which worked fine. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BIKE. Fast forward to the current offerings ,Kit Kat wrapper chrome, terrible electronics, flimsy plastic, stress crack steel and frames that have snapped in half whilst under warranty, flimsy wiring with recycled copper content ,just utter rubbish BUT IT IS CHEAP and so are the parts. The car reliability isn't great either as many suffer thermal runaway problems or have dangerous self driving technology. Some cars have even been found to leak electricity into the structure of the car which technically electrcutes the people in the car.

It took a long time for MG to overcome perceptions of being cheap and nasty, just as it did for Hyundai and Kia.
