A lot of negative comments from some viewers I notice which I dont agree with. This guy's son bought a bus manufacturing company in Northern Ireland that was going to be closed. They saved it and the jobs and turned the company around with their brilliant technology and are flying it. Its to listen to this guy and his views even if you don't agree with everything he says. Well done Harry on doing this interview and asking the important and interesting questions. Happy Christmas.

Yes, with absolutely zero background in the industry, his son miraculously received tens of millions in taxpayer funding for his bus co', plus government contracts. Obviously that all had nothing to do with the vast sums of money and donated to Boris Johnson, including towards his wedding(!) and the rent-free home Lord Bamford's wife gave him.

Just quietly, most automotive manufacturers would agree with Lord Bamford's comments about the direction they should take. Setting fixed targets and prioritising one energy source over all others, especially when batteries have some critical limitations, puts ideology above practicality. EV is just another alternative and the focus should be on energy efficiency and emission control, by whatever means.

@@jsanders100 Not really, it's because they can see that EV targets are politically driven rather than based on any real science. Ok - I converted to EV in 2019 after 29 years of driving petrol and diesel, some nice, some absolute dog-boxes. And have now covered about 120,000 miles in the two EV's I owned. Currently in a Model Y just shy of 50k miles, its two years old on 24/12/24. So far, servicing cost is zero. I recharge at home about 75% of the time, and use Tesla superchargers at other times when away from my usual commute. For clarity, the car did Canterbury to the Lake District in one go with no charge in August 23, they can do some miles between charges. I charge at home most days to keep it in the healthy zone around 80% as Tesla recommend. I am more than happy with BEV, its convenient, very fast, great tech and comfortable on long trips, well, just plan the pi55 stops around a charge - the car will tell you where to stop and give directions. Its simple. In the other video, there was a Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car, just for clarity there, as Bamford was waffling on about range, the EPA range for that Mirai was 312 miles - less than my Model Y. Also, his I Pace has a small battery, range is better in other models, his is the equivalent of a Range Range with a six gallon fuel tank, of course its short on range. One of the issues why BEV is more efficient that ICE is the lack of moving parts, whilst I commend that JCB have developed an internal combustion engine that runs on hydrogen gas, you still have the issue of wear and tear. I bet with a 300KwH battery, a JCB would do a days work easily, just need to get the site on the grid to charge them overnight, might not be easy of course unless in a city. I guess the JCB hydrogen engine is also low revving so suitable to maintain hydraulic systems but would not be too useful for a car? Anyway, we have an interesting future ahead with a mix of electric fulled and powered vehicles coming at us..

@@GT380man Exactly, to understand the UN and EU you first have to understand the people behind those and their beliefs and longterm objectives. To do that requires being able to look at information without having an emotional or ideological response, e.g. our social and educational programming and indoctrination from birth influencing us. So if someone is too feeble minded to cope with info that they have been programmed to be offended by, well they will never progress to understanding how certain organisations work and why. WW2 is a huge one with most people, who are incapable of taking in information that would utterly transform the world overnight if they would allow themselves to even reassess what they have been told to think about WW2. The entire official story for WW2 is complete and utter lies and subversion. The nation we are told to think were the bad guys is false premise. All the events and stories can be thoroughly explained and overturned, if better sources of info are used and better discernment and logic applied to the rest. Everything that has happened since WW2 is more or less a direct result of WW2, and if the truth were ever to be understood by the majority of the public, the game would be over for the current ruling global "elite". The Covid debacle would not have got off the ground, had people already known the truth about WW1 and WW2. All the tricks and lies used back then, would have been spotted a mile off by the public when repeated in 2020.

As a designer myself, I fully agree that EVs are at a mid-point and a long way from where they will end up. I also agree that it is frustrating to be hampering the development of internal combustion engines and hybrids at a point where we are still so unsure about future developments on fuel. Setting a tax on carbon and letting designers work out the best way to achieve low outputs would be a far more effective route than governments pre-judging and selecting outcomes. It's interesting to hear Lord Bamford's views as, even from advanced years, he clearly has good handle on product development and usability.

I see Bamford was a member of the house of lords. I remember a few years ago asking them to respond to an FoI to explain their reasoning why one should pay any inheritance tax. Their response was telling in that they said they don't have to explain any of it. Put simply, they see themselves above the common man, and as such, I view them as the enemy of sovereignty.

EVs have their place in the market, much like diesel, petrol, LPG etc. They may not replace the ICE, but that's not necessarily what they're here to do. They are a seriously viable option for many owners and journey types. They are also still very much early generation vehicles, and to be this good against ICE vehicles which have over a century of development behind them is pretty impressive. I think in 10-20 years they'll be unbelievably good, as they iron out lots of the usership issues.

Harry - Thanks for bringing us this episode. I’m pleased to learn that someone is pushing hydrogen engines in heavy equipment, this in IMHO where the push should be. We should be pushing hydrogen engines for transport vehicles, farming equipment, and public transport. Most transport trucks follow a specified transportation corridor which would make planning for hydrogen re-fueling relatively straight forward. As for EV’s I don’t think Lord Bamford has it right, the battery technology today will outlast the useful life of the car, that has already been proven. As for range anxiety, I get it for long distance driving that might be a concern however the vast majority of driving on a daily basis hardly consumes the battery. Additionally long range batteries are now on market, so what if you have to stop every two hours for a re-charge, might actually be good for public safety in forcing people to take a break from behind the wheel. One last thing, those who cover the automobile market and especially EV’s never talk about what is now being done with used EV batteries. EV batteries are designed or a certain power band required for a vehicle. However when they no longer deliver that power band, they still have considerable useful life. They can now be utilized for battery storage. Here is an example of one such company that is doing this now. In fact there is a stadium in the Netherlands that is powered by this technology. I would encourage you to investigate it and even share it with your viewers. www.eaton.com/us/en-us/catalog/energy-storage/xstorage-battery-energy-storage-system.html

Have to disagree with your comments about long distance driving and EVs. I recently had to drive from Malaga to Barcelona which is some 1000kms in one day and had to do the return journey the next day. For what I needed to do the train or plane was not an option and I am so glad I did not have an EV. I made three stops of around 10 to 15 minutes each and I was on my way. No need to stop when the car needed to stop and no need to go find a charger way of course from where I was. 10 to 15 minutes was enough to get some fuel, toilet break and get some coffee, in an EV it would added hours and hours to what was already a very long trip!

@bluesky9093 Regarding your comments relating to road safety and driving for more than two hours. How do you feel about the fact that it is now legal in the UK for an 18 year old to drive a 44 tonne truck for up to 4.5 hours at a time before taking a break of at least 45 minutes and then they can drive another 4.5 hours? My opinion after 35 years in the road transport industry is that the global economy as we know it functions as a result of fossil fuel powered (predominantly diesel/heavy oil) machines. This is due to the inherent energy density of the fuel along with its relative abundance and safe distribution and use by the end user. I agree that a cleaner alternative would be better. LNG and CNG have been tried in trucks and found to be uneconomical compared to diesel. Hydrogen presents even more complex problems than natural gas and is more energy intensive to produce and arguably more dangerous to transport and store due to its atomic weight and ability to embrittle metal. The end goal of “clean and CO2 free” is taking precedence over logical process to transition gradually to less harmful alternatives. A worldwide ban on any personal transport - cars, with a kerb weight greater than 1.5 tonnes would immediately reduce emissions yet everyone is seemingly encouraged to buy a 2 tonne plus EV (tax incentives etc) when a 1.5 tonne or less vehicle would adequately fulfil 90% of use scenarios for most people who use a car. As for your comment regarding second life use for batteries. It is way more complex than your example suggests. You need to talk to people who work in the industry rather than listen to PR related to best case examples. I recently worked with a lithium battery recycler to strip old laptop packs for 18650 cells. He said anything over 5 years old has no economical reuse value due to chemical degradation, i.e. it will not hold a charge or it will get too hot under discharge or the cells are lower quality and are not worth considering for reuse. There is too much vanity PR for these technologies and the real world economic viability is being ignored in favour of pushing the net zero narrative.

In general, this interview was polite and light on subject depth. Not convinced Lord Bamford is on the right track with "self charging cars". They are just as ridiculous as electric ones and make the man look somewhat stupid for suggesting they are the way forward. He basically just mocked his own company for going hydrogen fuel only. There is no rational point to having an "ICE" vehicle charging itself. If hydrogen is good enough to run a digger all day on clean burning fuel then it is good enough for any other vehicle too!

I'm not sure about Mr Bamford's view. Merlo have just launched electric telehandlers which also offer 8 hours work time. And on farm, these can just be plugged in. Even better if there is 3 phase electric available so up to 22KW charging. Would be ready in 4 hours. How long to call a Hydrogen bowser? Electric makes more sense for equipment needing high torque. Perhaps a hydrogen fuel cell system, so it uses an EV motor still is the drive system instead of wasteful gearboxes, not sure hyd combustion is the one solution. I'm sure all these solutions will come together though.

What a load of infantile made-up drivel. Plug in farm equipment? To what, with a long cord? And what on Earth are you blithering about 22kW charging? That's very SLOW charging and wouldn't charge up a combine or tractor with the necessary battery size in 24 hours!
@duncangwhyte
@duncangwhyte Ай бұрын
@@pistonburner6448 I guess you're not up for level headed conversation then. Not sure what triggered you so badly. Prob wouldn't work for combines, but the size of the battery in the Merlos would charge in about two hours on 22kw. Telehandlers often get used for a couple of hours at time, then parked up for a bit, so could get plugged back. Farm sheds usually have electricity in them, especially ones which have solar like Harry's. And there is no debate that electric motors are better at moving something, it's just a matter of how they get their energy. Especially agri vehicles, like tractors, where the engine is trying to turn not just the wheels, but PTOs, hydraulic motors etc. All the clutch packs, shafts, gears etc could all be replaced. I run an agricultural dealership, and happen so sell Merlo rather than JCB, but I know how farms work and how the machinery is used. Maybe even a Hyd generator on farm would be good, a lot of the efficiency is lost in the vehicles themselves as engines and gearboxes are so wasteful. That way it's generated on site with zero emissions (obvs still some emissions making the hydrogen and getting it there).
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 Ай бұрын
@ I'm up for any conversation...if there is some sense in it. 44kW isn't even enough for a small car (to genuinely replace ICE), and farm equipment needs even bigger to be of any use. In construction it's so often the case that they have no electricity available at all, even for small tools they need to run generators. In the winter, especially everywhere in the world up North (or down South) they need massively powerful battery heating and they still lose efficiency like crazy...and then those heating and cooling systems as well as the battery systems as well are very vulnerable to damage. Who pays for all of this? And the lost hundreds of billions of tax revenue which ICE used to pay while simultaneously being far cheaper?
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 Ай бұрын
@ You obviously are not being truthful in your claim of knowing how these vehicles and equipment are operated when you avoid the crushing examples of combines and tractors. And your honesty can not be trusted as you're too zealous, leading you to emit all mentions of the massive drawbacks, problems and barriers to EV. And costs, the crippling costs (most people don't even know about the tax revenue implications because they're not intelligent or educated enough to know the magnitudes which are at play).

Very interesting.. My point of view is that an EV car range being 200 miles is simply a non-runner. You can't have a car with 200 miles range especially with the fact that you arrive at a charge station, it either does not work or there are no charging spaces. It is madness to think that this will work for people. Petrol car fuel tanks are designed to give a petrol car a range of 550 - 600 miles. That is because any car has to have that range for it to be useful and then it takes 8 minutes to fill up the tank and pay. Energy Density of EV batteries has to improve and the improved technology that already exists has to be used.

Not what I want to see from the channel, but amidst some mistaken views, a good point was made about the size of new cars. How can government incentivise small and light vehicles? That would make a meaningful difference to congestion and emissions. Whilst most are not in a position to enjoy a restomod Porsche 911, the fact remains that smaller sports cars are simply more enjoyable, more of the time.

I don't necessarily agree with everything here, but i do think it is interesting. People being contrary to the norm are a very important part of technological development and should be applauded.

I've seen him at a few of his spots around the Cotswolds, the last time in a lovely vintage 911 at The Wild Rabbit - he's quite the car nut.
