It's because the RED Komodo sux... Or does it?
Well, so the Komodo sux FOR THEM. With so many baby dragons out in the wild, there are bound to be a few that go up for adoption.
Whatever the case, this video explores the top three reasons why the used marketplace has been seemingly flooded with lightly used RED Komodos.
Help me get one sub closer to my 1,000 sub goal! I want to try EVERY 12G SDI protection method and figure out which isolators work and which ones are BS
0:00 There are more Komodos for sale than normal
0:46 The RED Komodo isn't an FX6
2:16 It's your money, use it when you need it
3:00 Upgrading to the Raptor (or Komodo-X)
5:16 Absolutely no value in the video after this point

I think 10 years ago you could definitely tell the difference between a Red and a consumer camera. But consumer cameras have improved so much that it's hard to tell. The Fx6 vs BM6K vs Komodo blind tests, I can't tell which is which. Lighting and CC matter way more. I like your counter, where did you get it?
@ThomsonVisuals
@ThomsonVisuals Жыл бұрын
You’re 100% correct. I can only tell cameras apart by how they handle their highlights and shadows now. Colors are much easier to match than before. I was just watching a video by Alex Zarfati about the “most underrated camera of 2023” and I think he nailed it. A large part of camera adoption is brand loyalty at this point. When you look outside that tunnel vision, you start to see some great value-for-money options that could be better suited for up and coming image creators. Divoom Pixel 64! It’s tons of fun. It shows KZbin stats during my workday, and then shows fun shit at night.

They bought into the owner-operator youtube meme thinking the camera would repay itself in a matter of weeks or that sporting a RED would land them better-paying jobs. It doesn't do either thing. I bought 2 RED Komodos and immediately charged 2X what I used to charge, got less work but more profit and within one year and half I bought 2 Raptors and now got 2 more s35 raptors. so I got 4 red komodos, 2 raptors vv, and 2 raptors s35, not to mention the lights and all while of course having a good life financially and growing faster than I did from 2013 to 2020. could I do it with Sony and Canon mirrorless and cinema cameras? it didn't work for 7 years, blackmagic design cameras let me down 5 times in one year and it's not just one camera but 3 and I will never buy their terrible quality control cameras and weird ergonomics. I used to shoot, now WE shoot, cause I now have a business and focus on directing while my agency is killing it...we shoot commercials, live broadcast, documentary, and so many things that many people would choose an all in one cinema camera which is mostly a jack of all trades but a master of none, but the komodo did a lot of heavy lifting and all it took is talent, and knowing how to get it ready for the job at hand and have the necessary accessories that complements its capabilities. I mean damn, even a friend of mine learned filming with one of my komodos and is now doing really good using his own Red Komodo...he shoots outside and color grade the hell out of that R3D raw and it looks so good because he wasn't a filmmaker technically but he always had a great taste and talent in many things that are part of filmmaking. Sony and Canon drove me crazy, Sony with too much options that I don't need as much as RAW, and Canon with their half ass commitment to give us anything useflu without limits or what so ever...RED was to the point, fewer things to waste your time getting set, and what really matters the most without issues; great sensor, great codec, great ergonomics, and that's it.

Amazing comment. Very well said. I'm stoked for your success and I hope it continues. RED really does make a jack-of-all-trades camera. It very rarely places 1st in a single category, but it places 2nd in all of them, which for a lot of business owners, makes it the top tier camera. There's infinite demand for the Alexa 35 camera, but affordability is a massive issue, so a V-Raptor XL or two is a fine alternative. Venice 2 is great as well. It all comes down to money and preference at the end of the day. You've got to try in-camera camera to cloud, it's really saving money on my productions. Just need good upload. Cheers! -A

I have made indie feature films and music videos for over 15 years (I started back when 4k was really only available to movie studios or to really big budget projects)- so many people forget about Lighting, shot composition, framing, using 2 cameras to cut seamlessly between angles in a scene etc etc that make their work "look cinematic".... BUT as I am in the market for some new (used) gear (I never buy new), I have noticed that there are TONS of Red Komodos for sale on Ebay and other places and there are so many other Reds at very reduced prices for sale that it takes a long time to even look at them all....BUT at the same time, there are very very few people Re-selling their Canon Cinema Camera line cameras like the c70 (a direct Komodo competitor)or the c500 mkii or c300 mkiii etc.....makes me nervous about buying a Red rather than renting it for a project...the c70 is way easier to use and actually looks more "filmic" like 35mm Film Studio cameras of the past than the Komodo does in my opinion

Honestly, I love my Komodo and have no intention of selling it anytime soon. The global shutter makes it the best choice if working with an LED wall… The only other camera I’ve seen that works almost as well on a virtual set is the Sony Venice. Sorry Arri, BMD, Canon etc… However, I did just purchase a Fujifilm XH2S and the Leica M11 Monochrom for travel. Imo you nailed it. Many bought this camera but really needed something less manual… more forgiving. You need to take time to get to understand Reds. There’s a learning curve. Happy that you love yours.

Blackmagic shooter here: I shot on Pocket 4K and Ursa 4.6K side by side and did not see much of a difference and neither did my producers/clients so it's IO, ports and other features that matter. BUT pocket 4K and URSA 12k - holy sh*t there's a difference between the two. YES, Ursa is more difficult to shoot with and requires actual lighting experience, but for those bigger productions it can deliver RED and, dare I say ARRI-like image, just not "out of the box" because BM cameras are geared towards post production as BM props their software in that way.
@ThomsonVisuals
@ThomsonVisuals Жыл бұрын
I haven’t shot with the 12K. That camera with the OLPF intrigues me, especially since BM has been aiming for a color science with a film bias for quite awhile now. I‘be been off the Blackmagic bandwagon for a few years now, but if the street price of the 12K continues to inch lower, it may arrive at a price that leads me to pick one up for experimentation’s sake. Or, I could always rent. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I saw the Venice at NAB and was seriously impressed. Haven’t had the chance to work with it, but it’s seriously good. The bummer about RED falling out of style at the top end, is these next gen REDs blow the doors off the Scarlet and Dragon of years past. But there is more competition now than ever before, and RED has to move quickly to overcome that.
@musicelect
@musicelect Жыл бұрын
I think some people bought it thinking it would help them become a better cinematographer or get them clients or clout. It’s not that easy though. RED could have priced it at $8k and it still would have sold well. It also would have kept out the wannabes who should be playing with a BMPCC4K instead. You’re right when you say the FX6 might be a better choice. Or the Canon C70.
@ThomsonVisuals
@ThomsonVisuals Жыл бұрын
It’s possible to leverage the RED brand to win clients, but only in the entry level to mid tier of corporate videography. Once you cross that bridge, you switch from clients that love that you shoot on RED, to not caring what camera you use. The C70 is also fantastic, I agree.

You're right. But I'm wondering if the Komodo is more like a gateway drug into the world of RED. Like, $6,000 is much easier to throw at, than $25,000. So if someone gets used to using the Komodo, maybe they'll take a look at the higher end REDs when the business opportunity arises.

@@ThomsonVisuals This might mean that you gotta chase what the rest of the camera geeks are doing, review lenses and all that fugly shit - but as a videographer that's very ambitious myself - and like many others, these lens reviews and camera reviews aren't what I'm looking for. We can't afford even the budget lenses that are like 500 USD - like I just blindly bought a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - a leap of faith throwing down my Fujifilm 18-55mm f/2.8 lenses and approximately 250 USD. Might not be much in the eyes of someone who lives in an economy that isn't as inflated as my country's, but it's half the minimum wage here. why a leap of faith? cuz I can't find any good value reviews. I don't know what to look for to achieve that sharp image, to produce that sharp image that I crave so much. fortunately for me the studio I work in has good glass and the sigma lenses I bought was a very good investment and it worked just right for me - not everyones as fortunate as I am. If I was able to communicate clearly, you should've understood where I'm coming from. I really love your energy, calling out popular brands and stupid rich people throwing their money at big name brands. Its quite pleasing - but if you wish to get big - and I can honestly imagine you so - then you've gotta shift mediums and audiences.
