As someone trying to get my isekai phd the rabbit hole of "what is an isekai and what isn't" is a fun subject. The base of the difference between isekai, reverse isekai, the very uncommon "mixed" sekai and the very rare "world hoppers"(think Tsubasa) The additional spice of the difference between time travel, reincarnation and transported And the very heated discussion of fans not wanting their series to fall under the isekai umbrella(Digimon, Inu Yasha, Narnia, Harry Potter)

The "reincarnated as a sword" one reminds me of a story idea I had where a great warrior fought a cyclop, but both died in the fight. The hero got beheaded and the cyclop got stabbed in the heart, but the hero's sword was cursed, so now the hero's soul lives inside the cyclop so long as the sword is stabbing him. So he just wanders around in a dead cyclop's body with a sword stabbing his heart😅

Last one was something, it hinted to no isekai which made me think isekai was just thrown in on the first chapter or something, i thought they reincarnated and used their past life's skills to become a famous chef reaching a high stand in the royal kitchen but then being exiled for one reason or another, but the last part just didn't add up making it seem like they internationally gave up? ITS FAKE.

Profussy, if you take suggestions for lectures, I'd be fascinated by a seminar on love interests in dating sims. Some examples I've heard of include a Brother printer, an alpaca, a humanoid cricket, dinosaurs, pigeons, a horse with a man's head, and a plant with a woman's head. And if you include Western dating sims, you can include Nic Cage, John Cena, Colonel Sanders, and attack helicopters.

Isekai, you are transported to another world and legitimately spend more time in that story than in your own world, mostly with no ways of returning. Reincarnation is where the character dies Video Game is where you literally play a video game, regardless if you're stuck in there. Obviously there's weird exceptions like the video game world becomes a real alternate world but at the end of the day, SAO and Dot Hack aren't Isekai and I'm so annoyed normies pushed that bs idea when they clearly state its a video game. And no time travel doesn't count even if they make it some weird Feudal demon fantasy like Inuyasha. That's just how funky anime is.

Im pretty sure there has been a jap isekai involving the concept of some endgame npc, or living in an endgame town, so a bit of a curveball there. Also isekai is just going to another real world, VRMMOs are different.

VRMMO can be an isekai for the prota: . Accident guy gets in a coma (with eyes, mouth arms & legs removed), then brain interface connects them to a game. . Guy gets a scan for a brain tumor, 1 hour later dies (the data is used 200 years later to clone him, or an A.I. is made from it in a virtual world). . [In the case of SAO] If it was actually imposible to "get out" (instead of giving the players false hope with a challenge, then plottwist with a miracle); people would build new lives in the lower levels until they die.

@@adolfodef This is why my definition of isekai involves "real world" and why I avoid basing the description on the protags subjective point of view. This avoids issues that crop up if you try using the subjective impression view, like reverse isekais being considered normal isekais from the fantasy world characters POV.
