@@newolde1They would but then they would have to pay EPA fines for “not meeting the CAFE standard”. The fuel efficiency regulations have an absurd rating for trucks this size, no hybrid or PHEV can meet this rating and it’s beyond our technological and engineering capabilities. So it makes sense why they would make this an EV but yeah that unconstitutional government organization needs to go asap.

The EPA ruined the truck market and CAUSED MORE pollution. Everything is based on size. How many square feet does the truck take up? An S-10 size truck takes up "X" amount of space and is allowed "X" amount of emissions. (almost impossibly small amount) So S-10 sized trucks are no longer sold. I agree. $50k is going to be a really hard sell IMO. Their big selling point is that it fits in the footprint of a mini Cooper. Well a Mini is $25k. He mentions only needing 5,000 units to break even--I assume that is annually? I guess if they only intend to sell 20,000 - 25,000 per year there might be enough people interested enough in the novelty to have 2 or 3 years of demand which would give them time to--hopefully--scale up production.

I was so excited to see the Canoo pickup and TELO's design is even better but I feel their artificial size constraint of a Mini coupled with a whopping $50,000 price point will not serve them well. At least with a big truck, you (and everyone else) can see where your money is going. An extra 2 in. of knee and legroom would greatly improve comfort, and an extra 6" on the bed to make it the new industry standard of 5.5' would improve perception. Additionally, not having a visible, replaceable 5 mph bumper makes this thing look extremely weird, especially from the side. I think the Ford Maverick hybrid is genius and that size is perfect but Ford isn't making nearly enough of them and dealers aren't selling them for low $20Ks which is the real affordable price point we wanted. Too small and most really don't want it.

Love this idea of a smaller utility truck. Only issue is the price is too high, but can understand they'd go for the big performance and higher price for the first 500 vehicles. The real mass production sweet spot would be under $35k, and that'd be achieved with a smaller battery and half the power.. 500hp for this small ute is ludicrous 😝.. I think they're really aiming for the upscale outdoor adventure sports market and not the inner city utility work vehicle which wouldn't require this high performance or longer range.

I'd be more interested in a 6.5'-8' box without mid-gate. Where I live(North Dakota-ish), it gets to -40°F, and stays around 0 to -22°F for 5 months of the year. The last thing that I want to do is open a mid-gate to gain storage in the cold. Further, losing the rear seats for my squad in order to fit hockey sticks or plywood in the back is not ideal. I see their cute little snow shot, but how's the heater and battery thermal management system gonna handle actual cold temps? I love this idea, and I like the performance figures and efficiency, but I see a few things that will make this truck hard to consider for folks in colder climates.

After hearing Gali's post-mortem of Arcimoto (go watch that) the way Telo is talking makes a lot more sense with starting slow. Having a break-even at 5,000 units per year is amazing. I'd rather have a single cab with ~6ft bed. Basically the current single cab Tacoma. But this is a good step in the right direction. I do wonder how they're getting the current energy density. I hope it's not NMC based pouch cells. Cylindrical cells do have a bit higher intrinsic safety factor as each cell is metal armored. It can at least have a chance to reduce the time of major runaway. Now if this trucklet had LFP pouch cells, that would be fine, and even preferred over anything else IMO. Now that LFP patents have passed, prices have dropped like crazy. 50K is still really expensive for something like this. I know it's a new startup and they don't have economies of scale, but reducing that price I think is crucial. I don't know if getting lower HP motors/inverters and a bit lower capacity battery will reduce the price significantly, but I would try something. 500HP is cool, but totally unnecessary for this. Something like a ~200HP chevy bolt motor for the primary drive, and another ~100HP induction motor for the secondary would be fine for this. A truck this sized will never be used to tow anything more than a couple thousand pounds.

6:00 okay so create a version where users can buy a 25kWh, 50kWh, 75kWh, or the full 100kWh version, and built it such that the packs can be added later as needed. With the correct BMS setup there is little reason having modular packs that can be added or replaced over term wouldn't work. Personally I'd buy a 50kWh with two open battery spots, giving me better weight capacity for around town work, and then buy 1-2 more packs down the line if needed. Heck, I'd even keep them at home on a maintenance charger, and only slot them in when going on trips. Some people would say it's too heavy to add/remove packs, but I do the same with a small lift for my roof top tent.

Yes! More small truck EVs! Majority of conversations I have with people who still aren’t convinced to transition to an EV yet, usually say something along the lines of “until they make a small Ford Ranger size pick up EV, I’ll have to wait”. Also, cut that battery in half @53kWh. You don’t need more than 200miles in an EV in 2023- chargers are every 20-50miles. 106kWh is way too much battery. The new benchmark should be to never have more than 70 kWh for an EV battery, if you want more range, get a more efficient (smaller/different shape) car that can go twice as far with the same energy.

Not sure that a lot of truck buyers will look at this vs say a Lightning (or similar) at the same price point and see them as equal in value and quality. Perceived quality of the cabin alone I can see putting many off a small run unit. What are all the killer features (plural), besides small that would make someone want it over a mainstream EV truck? Small can also be perceived as less safe and less luxurious. Love the idea, just have trouble seeing it being highly in demand.

Okay, does that include all configurations from back cover mode (with seats) to open back space beach mode? That could be a sweet offer. Thanks for bringing the TELO Truck and company into the light. I will definitely be sharing this with friends and watching for more news and videos in the future. Peace, health, and cheers!

Love the concept! They do need to consider a smaller battery option, with a smaller purchase price, for all the switched on folk that realise they don't need a big arse battery.

If you are aiming at the pickup market provide a FLATDECK OPTION. You need to fit a standard 8'x4' panel in the body, and tie it down.You can't easily in a wellside The 3 main flatdeck groups ar Tradies, Farmers, and Camping types. The compact format is able to fit carparks in most countries and you only need to engineer a right hand drive for international market.

My biggest gripe about trucks is how they are just land barges that take up a ton of room for no reason with miles of blind spots. This solves all of those issues and might be enough to sway me to buy a truck. Although i do need it to be able to tow a trailer and sports/race car

I really hope this takes off. The small volume production looks like a perfect fit for the latest ISF, incremental sheet forming technology which can produce perfect sheet metal panels straight from a CAD file allowing for incremental changes as necessary. I would love a ute ( I'm Australian ) like the old Datsun 620 but nobody makes such a vehicle any more. Maybe you could offer a two seat or bench front seat with a bigger tray in a later model?

Seems like a really cool idea and concept, and I hope they succeed. The nose of that truck is freaking ugly tho, the little mini van in the background looks pretty cool, if they added even a small frunk to give the front end a crash/crumple zone and made it look better, this will sell like crazy. As bad as it went for Nikola, the Badger looked really cool, they should use that front end on these EVs!

Smart guy, I like this. His explanation of how they will ramp is the exact opposite of Aptera, and why I fear for the future of that company. Telo intends to actually build and deliver a small number of units by hand to get the ball rolling, and then ramp assembly as funds allow. He states that Tesla did the same. Aptera has yet to make a car, and they want to launch at full production, which seems very risky to me financially. They don't even know if people will buy them yet. They will outpace their orders very quickly, if they ever even get the funds to get to production at all.

To make this product really over the top in terms of utility, they should allow the sides of the bed to fold down to allow for even more carrying space for those slightly oversized items. And then make sure to put tie points under the vehicle so the loads can be tied down.

Okay, now that is the range, size, and performance specs and features that I like and can afford. I don't want to have to plan where I can fit to park, and I def do not need 0-60 in 2 seconds, its hard to keep lumber in place when Chewie hits the lightspeed lever.

If you'll indulge me, I'd like to add my perspective. Living in rural America where people actually use trucks for their intended purposes, what you're building is actually just a car with a really big trunk. There really should be a distinction between real trucks and people who just want something to commute to work and haul a bag of groceries in once in awhile. On rare occasions these people will haul their camping stuff with them. One of the big drivers of ever increasing size and horsepower is efficiency. People will ask...why do you need a giant pickup truck with 500 horsepower? The reason is efficiency. I can now do the same work with my pickup truck that I used to have to buy a separate medium duty truck... nearly the size of a semi truck to do. I can also commute, haul the groceries and the grandkids. I sacrifice a little bit of fuel economy in order to have a truly universal vehicle that does everything that I have to do. What you guys are doing is awesome, but it's a totally different niche that you're catering to...not the true truck buyers.

I would want this more than a Cybertruck. It's like the Aptera of pickups. And I'd want an Aptera mkre than a 3. Mostly. Full Self Driving is the main thing making me still want a Tesla. But I'm at least 5 years out from buying a new vehicle, so maybe these will all have self driving by then. 🤞

@@AaronVets You will. That comment will age as well as someone in the 70s saying they're not going to trust their life to computers when a few cars started getting computer chips put in them to handle throttle, valve timing, etc. Now, if every computer chip in the world was Thanosed, pretty much nothing would work - all money would disappear, no vehicles would work, your health records would be gone, everything from medical equipment to kitchen appliances to mining and farming equipment wouldn't work, electricity and gas stations would stop working and all communication would cease (yes, even mail) etc. It will be the same with AI in the future. It will handle everything, and everyone will be completely dependent on it for everything.

Great coverage, very interesting concept (and proto-kit or whatever that’s called), but there are two things that interest me: - repairability (think about Aptera, great idea + concept to make things repairable and more importantly accessible for everybody) - front tyre exposure: you only need to get a bit bumped in a parking situation or similar and the front tyre needs a repair - where a bumper would protect it and just split. A front tyre/suspension/geometry damage is costly and every owner should want to avoid that. I get the idea of the positioning, but a little tyre protection (think about e.g. the Smart car) would be desirable.
@spankeyfish
@spankeyfish 8 ай бұрын
Tyres will take a lot more abuse than a bumper, they absorb an enormous amount of force when you hit a pothole. My concern is that the steering rack and front ARB/swaybar seem to be about a millimetre behind the front bumper. Hopefully the black 'skirt' around the bottom of the body is plastic panels that are reasonably easy to replace, it could do with a similar one for front so something like a Camry dent doesn't become a $3000 problem.
