I was petrified before I told my boss I was retiring at the end of this year. I pretty much couldn't sleep for 2 days beforehand. I just knew it was time. A massive weight was lifted off my shoulders after telling him. He took it well. The stress and routine of the job was sucking all of the happiness from my life and there was no let-up in sight. I'm relatively young to retire but I'm more than ready. I have more than enough (27 years of VTSAX has been kind to me), and I have countless hobbies and interests I want to pursue before it's too late. I'm tired of being locked to my desk when the sun is shining outside. No more wasted summers for me. I didn't retire to do nothing, I retired to do anything I want.

Stress IS a killer. I cannot tell you how many times I came home from a stressful day of work and cracked open the ice cream container or consumed M&M's right out of the bag (instead of exercising portion control by first placing the M&M's into a small bowl and sealing up the bag). I knew it was wrong at the time, but it was as if a monster was taking over me.

Yes, I was nervous for many of the reasons you mentioned and kept telling myself "just one more year". Since giving my notice a few weeks ago, I'm still nervous but I just visualize what my days will look like and feel (LESS stress, more sleep, slow mornings) and then I feel better and know that everything will be ok. Just the mere act of giving my notice felt like a HUGE weight had been lifted, so I know it was time. I'm moving full speed ahead and not looking back. 😁

Retirement isn’t bothering me personally, it’s just that other people think I have all the free time and sitting around doing nothing. I’m VERY busy, I’m able to focus on my home projects and do an excellent job, I fell into a bad habit of hiring people because I was too busy making a living than living. I’m starting to get that feeling back of satisfaction of independence and a job well done, I became too dependent on hiring someone to do it and paying them. I have enough money to hire people however it’s just more satisfying to do it myself, and not going home tired and laying around because I was an employee.

I retired 2 months ago and really regret it. The reduction of income and too much free time is difficult. I feel broke even though I've saved enough. I don't like the dependency on the stock market. I am now looking for a job and unretiring. Retirement is overrated!!!
@muniondalenewyurk6777
@muniondalenewyurk6777 Ай бұрын
@@janethall8475it’s really a personal choice, if you feel better going back to work that’s your prerogative. But don’t knock folks who did retire or plan on retiring and enjoy their free time. When you do retire you should figure out what you would like to do with yourself to feel comfortable. Retirement doesn’t mean sitting at home and never going anywhere or doing anything. You should set goals for yourself, to keep your brain healthy and active. For example volunteering at an organization in your community to help others in need (ex: volunteer once a week at a food pantry, hospital, senior center, Veterans Hospital ect ). Or choose or learn a new hobby, knitting , painting, gardening, join a ymca or recreation center to do moderate exercises (senior Zumba, yoga, aquacise ect). What most active retires discovered is that they aren’t forced to work 40 hours a week at greedy uncaring corporations that don’t value us as human beings, only as another number. When your retired you have the FREEDOM, CHOICE and PEACE OF MIND do whatever you want and live your best life! Life is what you make it! If a person is miserable and toxic they will be that way whether in the job or retired! It’s about being positive and learning to accept that the job/career doesn’t define who you are and your purpose in life! If you always see the glass as half full, you will never be satisfied with anything! Working at a job to please an employer and be unappreciated, overworked and underpaid is also overrated! 😅😂 Most of us were brainwashed to believe that we must work until we are too old to enjoy the fruits of our labor or worst disabled! I have seen many people at my job pass away before retiring and never got the opportunity to enjoy their golden years! Guess what our job did when they passed away? Nothing and no one remembered them because they were replaced by another younger employee! Everyone has their own path and journey, so respect other’s personal decisions ! Best wishes to you in your future endeavors! ❤️

I think most people are afraid of retirement because they lose their employer provided guardrails such as a reasonable priced Healthcare mini insurances that the employer pays for disability etcetera etcetera Question for you since you've already retired and we know $1 is not going to be worth the same purchasing power 510 years from now when you are even more retired maybe ask like many KZbinrs that share their investment profile what would be the Investments that you would consider to not only preserve but also protect against the ravages of inflation over time so that your 500,000 next stage can still provide for you especially more so as you get older and maybe even more need of health care or other expenses to maintain your household

Many people choose to spend more time exercising, and less time stressing when they’re retired, but if that’s not you, then you’re right it won’t make any difference.

I wonder if there is a change in menopause / old age that does something to your head. I know I thought my mom was weird when I was a kid that she never wanted to travel or go to the movies. Now too I find myself not wanting to do these things when they were so much fun before. I wonder if it isn't some sort of hormone change that your body forces on you in anticipation of aging.

I just turned 54 and awfully late to investing with barely any portfolio except my 401k. I have a decent amount of cash saved up and with inflation currently soaring AGAIN, I’m getting worried about retirement. How do I best optimize my savings of over $ 200k.

You are less secure working than when you are retired. This realization is what let me retire. The older you get the more likely you are to be laid off by your employer. My obamacare insurance is 57 medical 21 dental. Stay poor on paper. The normal fears that you had won't change in retirement, sickness, death, spiritual, etc. You will just have more time to do what you like and to think through your fears.
