I have just pulled one of these from beneath my hedge. To my knowledge it ha been horizontal since we purchased the house 5 years ago. It is around 8 feet long with several leaf fans. The plant has been laying sideways along the ground beneath the hedge. We decided to pull it out to see if we could erect it in the garden. When it was finally dragged out we found that it has obviously been cut down as at the base is basically a trunk about 9 inches in diameter, no roots, just a sawn through trunk. The plant appears healthy with about a dozen fan like leaves. I assume it's been getting its nutrients from the main trunk being in contact with the ground as it has no apparent roots? Should we just dig a hole and put it in, or should we shorten the trunk a little first?

James, what would make the new palm fronds coming out to have brown stems and on the inside of the leaf? This is a 7 year old Mediterranean. 3 trunks
@TripedalTroductions4 жыл бұрын
I've got a potted trachy that just came in 3 weeks ago and it's bottom leaves are yellowing fast. Most of them are browning on the edges and turning yellow from the tips to eventually the petioles. I also have a leaf that looks closer to the one just starting to yellow on your washy. The crown is pushing out new leaves vigorously though and they look perfect. I can't take it outside cause it's super windy here and keeps falling over so it stays inside under a 400 watt light. It seems to appreciate water but I'm so scared to water it. Do you think it's ok to water more often? Haven't fertilized yet either.
@adammijares9222 Жыл бұрын
If you’re unsure how much water they need just use an ollas pot. As the soil starts to dry out the water from the pot will leech into the soil. The plant will take what it needs when it needs fed. All you have to do is check the water level in the ollas pot when it gets low and fill it as needed.

Hi, my Mexican Fan Palm is doing well but it has dried, yellow leaf tips. It was doing really well, but now in winter the growth is slowing down, which is normal, but the bottom leaves are starting to turn brown just in the edges. We have not had any hard freezes that it would be damaged. I have noticed on the back of the leaves there are lots of flies. What could this be a problem with? Even though growth has slowed down this winter, it has still opened 1 or 2 leaves, so I’m not super worried about it. Im hoping that when Spring comes it will get better. Please let me know what could be wrong.

Well i had 2 of my palms transplanted in the ground over 2 weeks ago. They were green with healthy roots no sign of yellowing and now they turned yellow and lost most of the bottom fronds. The under watering is not the reason,because i have the grass sprinkles that reaches them and waters them everyday. They are fertilized as usual,nothing new so i guess in my case would be the over watering...?! What do you think ?
@CeltDoesStuff4 ай бұрын
Hi James, if you catch it early can the yellow fronds turn back green?
@TheJames29294 ай бұрын
@@CeltDoesStuff no they never turned back. They just turned green yellow and eventually to brown. Make sure that it has enough water do not overwater it and make sure that you’re giving it plenty of fertilizer and plenty of sun.

I have recently bought two Trachycarpus Forunei Palms and haven't watered them for a week as it's raining every other day. I've noticed my leaves are also drooping midway and the new shoots are brown and patchy. I have also used chicken manure pellets as fertilizer twice in 3 weeks. They are currently in pots. Any advice would be appreciated. I am from the UK. Thanks in advance.

Hi James, I love your channel man. I used to be on the FB zone pushers page for 5+ years and I found out about you from there. This video was helpful. I used to zone push when I lived in Detroit, then Columbus, I gave up when I moved to Grand Rapids, but now I live by Raleigh NC. I recently bought a potted 25 Gallon Washingtonia robusta, and quickly (within 1 week) 4 leaves turned yellow. I’m assuming from your videos I’m not watering it enough and not a deep enough soaking. I just cut the 4 fronds and gave it a deep soaking. It’ll be in the 80+ degree area for the next few days, soaking it everyday won’t be an issue? Thanks again
@TheJames29293 жыл бұрын

Thank u for making this video. I have a Mexican Fan Palm, around six years old, that my wife recently had moved from the front yard to the back. It’s been about a week and I got seven fronds turning yellow and dropping like in your video. Any advice on how to save it? I’m watering it a lot, I read fertilizer could burn the roots...

Torque Ninja did you transplant it from the backyard ? was it growing in the ground or was it in a pot ? If it was in the ground just cut off most of the leaves except for one or two in the center and just water the crap out of it

Hay James I'm interested in trying a Majesty Palm again in my sunny apartment windows but I have killed 3 trees do to yellow leaf and spider mites I'm thinking I should spray the whole tree with garden pest soap spray and Epsom salt for to prevent yellow when I first get the plant😀
@TheJames29294 жыл бұрын
Matthew Whitted if I were you I would consider reporting it in a large pot and fertilizing it keeping the soil moist to avoid yellowing and add supplemental light like a LED grow light and then of course making sure that has no spider mites when it comes in if it has one they will multiply into millions

I really need help my chinese fan palms has started turning mushy it's so strange the leaves are now to crinkled and shriveled yet kinda mushy I'm struggling to find sources to help me figure out what wrong it's not discoloured as one point it wasnt humid enough but since then I've misted it regularly and trimmed the brown tips leaving a boarder between the green foliage I'm really concerned I don't want it to die

Will this palm survive in Atlanta. I think growing zone 8a
@TheJames29294 жыл бұрын
Big Brick if you’re in Atlanta I don’t think so I have seen them in south Georgia like Valdosta I think if you did a very quick easy protection method perhaps even just a tarp over it in the winter time with all the leaves cut off I think he would be fine I think if you just left it on its own it would probably die after a year or two but if you protect it especially when it’s small it might make it for a long time I have successfully growing for three years now in the ground in zone six so it’s definitely possible with the right protection. I think you would only have to really protect it for a couple of days just some Christmas lights and a tarp for the winter would be all you would need
@TheJames29294 жыл бұрын
Big Brick you can definitely grow quite a few different kinds of palm trees there. you are quite lucky for that growing zone. Cheers 🍻🌴
