sometimes as a person that isnt blind or visually impaired it can be nice to have audio descriptions on like at night time watching a movie you are getting sleepy but want to watch something and have the audio description on can help with not missing something that could have been important. hope that made sense

Actually that’s one way folks who are sighted use audio description. It’s like how sometimes those who aren’t deaf use closed captions to watch a video in a noisy environment. So I like that there’s a way of using these features even if you don’t have those conditions.

Hey Juan! This is a great and interesting video. I agree with you, audio descriptions are really nice for those of us with low vision. I typically am not the type of person who enjoys sitting down watching TV, but since we discovered audio description, it is definitely a lot more enjoyable for me because I can follow along with a movie or show almost as well as a sighted person. Thanks for the great video. Matt

Thanks Matt for the comment. Yeah I’m noticing that I need AD more and more even though I sometimes think I don’t need it. I’m glad however that more and more classic movies are slowly being described so I’m glad that I’ll be able to revisit or even watch some classics that are new to me with an AD track.

I think it be interesting to rewatch some classic movies with AD and see what was missed the first time around. Glad your bringing awareness to thr blind and visually impaired community. Great job 👍🏻

That’s what I really want to do with some of the movies that I watched years ago. It really would be interesting to know if I missed any details from when I watched it earlier.

Impressive research, fantastic survey, Dismal result. Hopefully your overview creates more interest and accessibility! 🙏🙏🙏

thanks. You want to know what’s a bit funny about the research? I had accidentally used their first 100 movies list and I did not know they had an updated list until I was editing the first version of this video, so I had to completely redo the entire video because of that. Let’s say I learned my lesson on that one LOL.

My favorite classic movie is Singing in the Rain and I’m not sure if it is has audio descriptions. I would love for it to! All the classics need audio descriptions. I’m glad Paramount took the first step so hopefully more will follow!

Unfortunately it does not have audio descriptions at the moment. The good news though was that it was on that hundred movies list. I can’t imagine how it might be a little more of a challenge to describe a musical? Maybe I’m wrong though. Either way, great movie and I hope it gets audio described in the future.

Hey Juan, great video! I was wondering if you could share the list of the 12 titles that are audio described of that list of 100 movies? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thank you, and I will have to check again because I recently took a look at that same list, and now a few more films have AD. I might make a follow up video, but I can also post the updated list of AD included titles.

I'm guessing the cost of adding audio descriptions retroactively to classics and the lower numbers of the audience that may need it plays a role. More attention this gets hopefully will spur on change.

Yes I definitely see that as a huge factor. I am going to assume that the movies that get more demand to be described will be getting described sooner than some of the other classic movies. Or maybe some of them won’t even be described at all due to a lack of demand. I guess really only time will tell.

You can find an audio-described version of Citizen Kane on the Blind Mice Movie Vault. Go to blindmicemart.com, create an account, then log in, and the link to the movie vault will be near the bottom of the page. These movies are Mp3 files and do not have visuals, but they’re there. Hope this helps.

It’s frustrating. There’s movies I saw back in the day before I went blind, that I cannot really see now. I also want to introduce older movies I viewed to my boyfriend, (also blind) but lack of audio description stops me, which makes me sad. I tend to reference movies a lot, but he has no clue what I’m talking about.

There you go. That is a perfect example of what I was talking about. It really is a crappy thing knowing that there’s people who are blind or visually impaired who want to watch some of these movies and can’t. Here’s to hoping more old-school movies or audio described over time.
