Why Arthur Morgan is Rockstar's greatest protagonist [SPOILERS]

After mourning the loss of a video I spent weeks on, I'm back and ready to start uploading consistently this time.
Upon finishing Red Dead Redemption 2, I knew I had to make a video on Arthur Morgan specifically. Rockstar have done an absolutely amazing job on this game and I believe that Arthur Morgan is without a doubt their greatest character they've created to date.
Really hope you guys enjoy the video. Hopefully there aren't too many editing mistakes, I'm just getting used to a new program...

I wanted to offer some constructive criticism, but it's totally fine if you don't listen. At 2:07, you started using Jose Gonzales' song Far Away from Red Dead 1, and I why is obvious, the connection. But I personally would have to recommended his song "How Low", as it fits Red Dead 2 much, much better from a narrative standpoint, and the connection would still be there, what with the same simple yet alluring and relaxing tones of most of Mr. Gonzales' music. Dutch didnt have a Brain injury . The entire story is about you and the gang escaping civilization . It’s about their beliefs and values being challenged and persecuted. They’re outlaws in a time where outlaws are being haunted down like the Indians were . I believe Dutch never had the intention to stop the outlaw life . Being an outlaw is his life because civilization means him being in prison and being executed . Whether they escaped or got away with it . The gang was never gonna stop . I believe in that last chapter . Dutch was torn between his beliefs and values and a new life . And he was prideful .

1945joshuaruiz Also one thing extra. Everything before Blackwater was more slow pace gaining money to retire. When the gang was in blackwater they were really close to having enough money to go retire in California. When things when south in blackwater they stashed away all that money and weren’t able to get it, years and years of work gone. Thats why Dutch starts going crazy and doing riskier jobs, to get right back to the finish line when it took them years to do it before.

After discussing the game with several of my friends and people online, I've noticed that people who try to rush through without reading the journal entries, or doing side content come away with a less in depth view of Arthur's character and the story as a whole. All the same plot points and character motivations are there in the main story but the journal let's you see how Arthur reacts to the situation the gang is in and let's you see how he is conflicted about his own morality.

@@VegetaLF7 John is also younger than Arthur by about 10 years. I think it's safe to say he hasn't matured quite as much. Also, we see John at the point in his life that Arthur lost. Arthur had a woman and a son but instead of being a father and husband he continued his outlaw life and tried to play both sides and he paid dearly for it. "Show me the wisest man you know and I'll show you a man whose made the most mistakes." John got lucky, he didn't have to make all the mistakes Arthur did before he finally saw the truth.

And when he died, Arthur got on the ground next to him through a quickly approaching bullet storm just to thank him and be with him so he wasn't alone in his final seconds of life. We can't say the same for Dutch who stood there and could only mutter the word "I..." And walked away without even saying anything in Arthur's defense to the man that essentially eliminated any small amount of hope of Arthur walking away from that situation somewhat alive. He just walked away. After decades of being a father figure. Dutch really fucked up in the end.

I just recently found out that if you don't have really good bonding with your horse you won't be able to get the horse cutscene when he dies. I found that out when I was replaying the final mission for Arthur. P.S. I don't know what level of Bonding you need to trigger this cutscene, I'm guessing about 2 or 3 maybe even full.

I’ll admit. When I first started playing RDR 2. I didn’t care about Arthur at all. I wanted to see John and all the other characters from the first game. However, over time that changed. Arthur’s tragic backstory and phenomenal character development left me with one of my favorite protagonists I have played in a video game and his death scene was one of the few times in playing a video game where I cried. Arthur is a legend and I pray we will see more of him in future DLC.

Real quick, can we talk about Javier? I loved him in the first few chapters in the game. He was likeable, had fun and interesting dialogue and seemed like a good person but disappeared half way through the game. I honestly forgot about him in the last few chapters of the game and I think rockstar did too. When he took Dutch's side at the end it didn't seem right, nothing about his character seemed like he would choose Dutch over Arthur but he did. Compared to the other characters Javier was severely under developed even Strauss was more developed than him and he wasn't even in the first game.

Both Javier and Bill start treating Arthur differently in chapter 5 & 6 (Post- Guarma) because of their perceived fluctuation of Arthur's loyalty to Dutch. You can learn a lot about all of the characters by spending time talking at camp. If anything Javier came into the fray last second after Arthur ousted Micah. With that being said, he was probably scared and confused.

You can actually see a lot of Javier if you hang out in camp enough. I think he stuck with Dutch because he was confused and scared. He grew up a Mexican revolutionary with no country or anybody to return to after he was forced to flee due to the price on his head and just wanted to remain part of something. When it all fell apart, he chose Dutch hoping it would all fix itself somehow.

My horse "Loki" a Stallion, I captured and broke in chapter 2 (near the old oil derrick) I lost her in chapter 4, trying to beat a train at the crossroads at Riggs station. I genuinely felt a sense of loss, i was gutted she died and very annoyed at my own foolishness. I could have re-loaded but i didn't. At the end game, i was glad i was alone, I'm nearly 50 years of age and I had tears. Arthur Morgan, it was a privilege to role play as this character.

He says “…it hardened me, feeling that kind of pain” It changed my perception of him forever. This kinda makes John Maston's story, which includes his death, kinda perfect. Arthur told him to run and not look back. But when you see how much damage has been done by the lives they've led, if would be unfair to the world if those who escaped weren't held accountable to their actions. That includes both John AND Ross. It's like Dutch said: You can't fight nature. You can't fight gravity. The law of nature and gravity is in its balance: for every action, there is a reaction. When you kill a woman's husband, her natural reaction is to see you pay for it. The only way to avoid the consequence is to either run from it, or kill the woman. But if you do the latter, then you have to pay for the two lives you killed. If you don't get that consequence, you think "What's to stop me from killing again if I got away with two deaths", and that causes you to do even more harm. The reaction to your actions always come back to bite you. You can run from it, fight it, but it will always impact you in some way in the end. And the more you resist, the more the consequences build. This isn't necessarily the way the world is, but it's sure as shit the way it SHOULD be. The gang was always trying to outrun the consequences of their actions, and thus only built up more debt to be paid - more angry victims of their crimes. Someone needed to pay for all that. If at least so that others will learn not to follow in their footsteps by thinking they too can escape their actions. John died because he didn't want to run anymore. He didn't want the debt to build any higher. And so, finally, all that debt, all that chasing, or that violent consequence would finally go away and all of this would end. Leaving only Ross to collect on what was left. This makes Jack the perfect candidate to bring it to a final end. Because he was an innocent born into this life without any choice. So only he could walk away from this story and live in peace. Only he could find redemption for the dead!

Seeing such a strong character you really fell in love with within the course of the game become weaker and weaker every day, leading to his eventual death.. that was what broke my heart. Katie Adler I had the epilogue of the game spoiled for me at least 1 year in advance due to a leak that detailed many events such as the house building scene, so I had some idea that something would happen to Arthur, but even though I knew what would happen to Arthur in the end the slow gradual way that he dies is much more heart-wrenching then a quick sudden death because you know, no matter what you do, it's gonna happen. The final mission with Arthur was probably the first time I've ever cried over the death of a video game character.

Red Dead 1 and 2 were masterpieces. I enjoyed the hell out of RDR1 and what they did to up the ante with story in RDR2 was simply astonishing. RDR2 set up the whole story in RDR1 perfectly, including JMs motivations and his very nature. Arthur is essentially JMs big brother and they had a certain sibling rivalry throughout their early life. A very cool dynamic. I don't think people fully realize but RDR2 was as much about JM as it was Arthur. It perfectly sets the stage for the RDR1 story. I hope they remaster RDR1, I will be first in line to buy a copy.

Arthur was always hard on himself, even if he did something good or helped others he always thought he was a terrible person, and that’s hit the most is that he always thought he was a bad person but everyone he helped remembered him throughout life and wanted to become like him. Arthur is the type of person we should all thrive to be in life, better yourself for others and for yourself, don’t settle for ok, settle for greatness

Exactly!! I have played through Story mode at least 6-7 times now since I first started playing the game in May 2020 and have cried many times during different scenes they've done in the game. Yep I agree, Arthur is not my favorite Rockstar character (please don't hate me) but he's my second. John Marston is my favorite so for some people like myself prefer John more but its really on peoples opinions. No ones opinions is wrong. I sometimes feel a lot of people think since a new character is born and a brand new game is born that the new character should be everyone's favorite and if others don't have that character as their favorite then they must be nostalgia blind. whenever the next RDR 3 comes out i'm sure if people say that they prefer Arthur or John as their favorite they will be told they are blinded by nostalgia lol. Hell, I'm sure Red Harlow still is somes favorite.

In my opinion, even if Arthur goes through an existential crisis to make up for his life, it’s only because tuberculosis leaves him no choice but to question his whole life. It hasn’t got the depth of a character like Gavin, who purposely erases his very own existence in a way that he cannot commit either good or evil, maintaining a balance in the universe and leading people into his path across the world

This game gave me chills over the dark yet subtle backstory for arthur he almost never talked about his son or wife and how they died but when he did towards the end of chapter 6 it was a shock because it correlates with your honor system aside from john you have a legitimate reason to either be an outlaw to the end or try an redeem yourself before you die Like Charles said its a blessing to know when and how you'll pass... *this game bro*
