I used to rebel against the school by skipping classes, and study for the exact same class by myself, and ended up with the highest grades in class. The teachers were so pissed off that they think I'm just arrogant. But pissing them off was exactly my intention.

This is so true. I studied in Asia before coming to the US for high school. Calculator was never an option. You do everything in your head and write down the steps. By then your brain works so fast you get the answer before you even write down the steps. The steps are only there to show that you didn't copy someone else's work lol.
@DarlaPoo

When I was a kid I was really good at math. I just had an instinct about the answer as soon as I saw the problem. I was always getting 100%. My teachers got suspicious because I wasn't showing my work. They would ask how I knew the answer and I didn't know. So they forced me to write it down step by step, using their formula and by the end of it all I had completely lost any sense of math that I had. 😒

If you want my personal opinion on it, Kumon was literally scary. It was like a big room, with blue-white lights and a mildy loud air conditioner, making it colder than antarctica. I went to an all-girls private school in Canada that was minimum 80% Chinese. To be clear, they were all flawlessly fluent in English. Native fluency is required at my school. Most were born and raised in Canada or came here VERY young. Soooooo many of my Chinese classmates went to Kumon. I sucked hard at math so I asked one of my (Chinese) classmates if she recommended Kumon to struggling students. She looked at me and said “No, you’re white. Kumon is unofficially for Chinese people. White people go to Sylvan Learning Centre.” 😂

thing is asian parents have an extreme lack of privacy with their kids. i once asked my mom if she could knock on my door before she came in (not even knock and wait, literally just knock once before coming in) and i regretted it for months.

Bruh Indian students are not allowed to use calculators till they're like 18 and in college 😭
@hj2479
@hj2479 3 жыл бұрын
I know, American tests allowed me to use calculators but my Indians parents made sure that I could not ever use one until my last year of high school. I hear non-south Asian kids talk about Kumon torture but my Indian national topper father thought that personally crafted college-level torture at home starting at the age of 6 was more fitting. It was painful then and it almost killed my love for math but in the end, it made me a better mathematician and while others struggled in math I had already built the skills to learn math quickly on my own and apply it. It does make me sad that my kids never had that love for math but as long as they keep working hard on their passions as they have been I will always be proud.

@@fearedjames Nah man its every yellow asian country. I'm from HK and as a trilingual I often apply the language norms of English to Chinese and the consequences of that is me constantly getting called out for disrespect. It's a lot to do with history actually. Before the Qing dynasty fell, it's normalized for children to kowtow by kneeling so low that the head touches the ground. Sometimes for more severe misconducts, you are required to repeatedly hit your head on the ground until blood is visible on the forehead. That just goes to show the contrast of cultures with the East and West. Notice how countries with the highest IQ uses honorific phrases and words the most?

oh man Kumon. I've had vivid memories of learning tons of simple math without advancing to the next level. Even if you're proficient at it somehow the learning centre just gives you a shit ton of more work. Also the text they use is a modified Comic Sans out of all the fonts the could use and in my centre back then they have this English section filled with kids that stutter every single letter. I love learning English back then (I'm Indonesian) so I'm pretty envious of them learning English while I'm on the other side of the room learning math
