This is so true. I studied in Asia before coming to the US for high school. Calculator was never an option. You do everything in your head and write down the steps. By then your brain works so fast you get the answer before you even write down the steps. The steps are only there to show that you didn't copy someone else's work lol.
@DarlaPoo4 жыл бұрын
When I was a kid I was really good at math. I just had an instinct about the answer as soon as I saw the problem. I was always getting 100%. My teachers got suspicious because I wasn't showing my work. They would ask how I knew the answer and I didn't know. So they forced me to write it down step by step, using their formula and by the end of it all I had completely lost any sense of math that I had. 😒

Still, I feel a little bit embarrassed when I calculate "easy numbers" with iPhone, worried if my dad got me at the scene... 😂 And the hardest part of life is that I am sitting with some Asian friends and accidentally to mention something involve numbers, like financial problems, rental rates, etc..Then, all I can do is chewing straw and goes like, "hmmm, Ahah, sure, yeah, of course, huh..."

I hear non-south Asian kids talk about Kumon torture but my Indian national topper father thought that personally crafted college-level torture at home starting at the age of 6 was more fitting. It was painful then and it almost killed my love for math but in the end, it made me a better mathematician and while others struggled in math I had already built the skills to learn math quickly on my own and apply it. It does make me sad that my kids never had that love for math but as long as they keep working hard on their passions as they have been I will always be proud.
