Why Assam Floods Every Year? | Assam Floods 2022 | Dhruv Rathee

Year after year it is the same story. Millions of people get displaced in Assam and other north east indian states due to floods, precious human and animal lives are lost. In this video, I analyse the reason behind why these Assam floods happen. Since 1950, there have been 12 major floods, but in recent years the frequency of the floods have increased drastically. Deforestation in the Brahmaputra area, encroachment of floodplains, location of Assam, poor maintenance of embankments and climate change are a few of the reasons. I will specially focus on climate change and embankments in this video. Embankments are also called Levee or Dykes. I explain what they are, the problem with them and the solutions while talking up the Netherlands as a case study.

Yes ! I m from Assam, not every part but only few areas which are low lying are affected. The place where I stay, we have never experienced flood but it's good to see how people from different parts of the country are supporting us and weird too. Bcoz people here believe that we north easterns r not treated properly or basically ignored in other parts of the country. This problem of flood, which I consider to be a yearly disaster, has to be tackled in a totally planned manner with proper resource management. This can be done by implementing both short term solutions and long term ones. Thr short ones will help in arresting this issue untill a more permanent solution arrives to completely mitigate it. The short term solutions which I feel are: Clear the drains and rivers so that they can carry more water. Stop dumping our wastes into them and keep them clean. Build dams and embankments to check the overflow into our lands. Save our ditches, lakes, rivers and other water bodies. We need to stop filling them at the earliest because they hold up most of the rainwater thereby checking flood. The long term solutions should need permanent or should solve this problem for the next 100 yrs until we come out with some other ways. Some of my recomendations will be To implement the river linkage scheme, so that the excess water can be sent to places where there is drought, thus being a mutual benefit. Construct something like an underground water discharge channel as its done in Tokyo, Japan. Increase the water carrying capacity of our rivers by deepening them. Dug out new canals to divert the water... If we can implement these without delays and scams, I am sure we can solve this issue... Note: I will keep updating the list whenever I come out with new ideas and I get time.

@@abhirupchoudhury1156 I've been there in Assam recently passed out from iitg which is very near to Brahmaputra river....just lemme know that what would have been the situation if he was a bit early?....why can't you just appreciate the fact that he is acknowledging the problem which your state face every year...also have you tried to help your near or dear ones affecting from this floods?.... also one bizarre thing I've noticed during my stay in Assam is that only the rural areas where majority of population is extremely poor are being affected by this flood disaster so the GOvt and even people of Assam aren't that concern about it in real..most of peoples concern are limited upto digital platforms only.....though im not blaming anyone it's just how we as a human have become....
