@heartears angel YES! I watched it while I was recovering from my c-section with my first child. I had my fair share of overloaded hormones and this movie was both a film favorite and a film I never wanted to see again. I felt my heart beat out of my chest. I don’t know how they did it, but they perfectly conveyed raw emotion throughout the entire film. It has been nearly 13 years and I am unsure if I can ever watch it again.

She was casually at home when she was wearing the mismatched patterns, I think that’s completely fine, it just means she threw it on without too much thought. It was also a burning hot summer and she was at home with just her family and staff, so there wouldn’t have been much need for all the undergarments. Just my take!
@romeostruedude
@romeostruedude 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah if I recalled in the novel it was an exceedingly hot day. So it makes sense if you are home with family. No guests have arrived. It’s hot as heck and there’s no reason to dress to impress. It’s like wearing PJs with an oversized shirt. It’s flowy. Unflattering. But overall comfortable. Which is the point. Comfort. And if that day was hot as I believe it was described I just wish I could send everyone tank tops and gym shorts. Bleh.

I thought wearing undergarments was important as it would soak up the sweat and grime, instead of letting it get on the outerwear that would have to be washed. so wearing proper undergarments would be more important as she would sweat more?
@AbiCroCro
@AbiCroCro 3 жыл бұрын
@@electriksheep1508 there’s staff for that. She’s a human, you’re a human, what would you do in a hot summer at home with just your close family? You could theorise that but she’s not wearing a bunch of underwear so it feels a bit like unnecessary mental gymnastics. In the film she wasn’t wearing a heap of undies and I’m just stating why it doesn’t feel like an error. Undergarments did do that but it’s not like it was their main function, and they’d need washing out anyway so do you want to wash the clothes and a heap of underwear or just the clothes? :)
@electriksheep1508
@electriksheep1508 3 жыл бұрын
@@AbiCroCro oh no I just meant that they wouldn't want to wash the garments because washing wears them down, whereas an undergarment is comparably more replaceable. i was just wondering if it was like foregoing panties for them? as we wouldn't do that even if it was hot. but it makes sense if they made people sweat more, you're right.

I loved the way you talked about adjusting for modern sensibilities. Taking the audiences references and responses into consideration over being purely historically acurate. I think sometimes expert critics forget that part. There is a huge difference between not bothering to do the reaserch and, as in Atonement, choosing to adjust some things to better tell the story to the audience, while still staying close enough to the time.

Really enjoyed your take on Atonement, so few people talk about this movie! Please do more movie costume breakdowns :) I think Cecilia doesn't wear all her undergarments because they are experiencing a heatwave in the first part of the movie - in the book Robbie can see a 'dark triangle' between Cecilia's legs as she emerges from the fountain. I also think the mis-matched shirt and skirt was indicative of the Cecilia's lack of direction and unfocussed state of mind - this is also shown in her bedroom which is a disorganised chaos with a bunch of clothes everywhere. It's a nice touch and subtly shows us how lost she is in the beginning of the movie.
@autumnmilburn1974
@autumnmilburn1974 3 жыл бұрын
Another point I loved with the first outfit is how the floral print of the blouse and the geometric print of the skirt should clash but they miraculously go together well, it must have taken a long time to find fabrics and patterns that clash but mesh like that. It kind of mirrors how Cecilia and Robbie themselves come from different worlds and perhaps shouldn't be together but they seamlessly do. The 'blurred lines' of whether the fabrics match or clash also mirrors their relationship at the start of the film, when they have an awkward unfriendly relationship which we later discover is underpinned by their mutual repressed feelings for one another
@aghnaps9396
@aghnaps9396 3 жыл бұрын
That's so true....I think they themselves think that they don't suit each other well......until and unless the letter that Robbie wrote just thinking about what he feel about Cecelia not with intensions of giving it to her because he thought Cecelia do not think of him that way ........but anyways reach her ...and how it's revealed that Cecelia also has feelings for him and been fighting against it cuz they are from different backgrounds ... especially during 1930's and all....it's so hard to even dream of being together..... nevertheless they were perfect for eachother
@misssol1807
@misssol1807 3 жыл бұрын
I see the mismatch of patterns in her first outfit as a reflection of Cecilia’s own conflicted feelings for Robbie. She’s caught between that expectations of her family and her desires. She is not supposed to love him because of having grown up together but mostly because of the class divide between them. He knows that this divide is there. This is clear when just before the fountain scene where he misunderstands her words about him pursuing medicine. I also see her lack of undergarments as a symbol of her finally stripping of her own prejudices about loving Robbie and being naked in her heart. Him “seeing through her” prompts him to daydream and ultimately to finally step forward library. Just my two cents.

yes!! in the book cecila is striving to look both relaxed and self-contained ‘as though she hadn’t given (her appearance) a moment’s thought’, which is also reflected perfectly in her desire to wet the flowers so they can achieve a natural, but still perfect, disarrangement.

The blue nurse outfit would also fit with the NHS traditional look and since it is British and it would depict our typical look for old-fashioned nurses
@charlottegiles2050
@charlottegiles2050 3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking - obviously she isn't an NHS nurse because it hadn't been created at the time, but if they'd put her in lilac a modern British audience might not immediately get what she was supposed to be, especially as she doesn't have her nurse's hat on in the scene. Putting her in blue tells us she's a nurse now without it having to be the very first thing they say in conversation to avoid confusion.

I was reading the Atonement book by Ian McEwan when this film came out and I finished it the day before seeing it in theaters. I remember reading the description of the green backless evening dress in the book and then seeing the final design on screen and having my mind BLOWN. Like the book described a gorgeous dress but it was brought to life in such an iconic way. I agree, hands down one of the best dresses in a movie.

Aaaagh. I have such conflicting thoughts about that movie. I love it because it introduced me to geisha and traditional Japanese culture but also can’t stand it because it’s such a misrepresentation of those things. I know they weren’t going for accuracy at all but these days I can’t even watch that movie without throwing a little fit. There’s a really good documentary about Satsuki, Gion’s current star geisha which is much better. She has exquisite taste in kimono too 🥰

Also James's imposible blue eyes complement Keira's blue dress and Keira's brown eyes also complements James' soldier uniform. Blue could also represent what Briony imagines happened between Robbie and Cecile by what she hears about or sees. Her eyes are blue and some scenes are focused on her eyes when she's watching the couple. Blue also prominently shows up in some of the scenes she's not in, causing me to believe that there are lot's of blue tones because of how she imagines Cecilia and Robbie in a situation that she was not in of just the two of them together, like when Cecilia and Robbie are in the city and Robbie's eyes are a piercing bright blue, where as Cecilia's nurse attire is also a powder blue (plus the scene looks to have blue hues and undertones. Also because Robbie is leaving for war, leaving the characters and audience left with generally hopeless and sad feelings for the couple, because blue is often seen as a sad color and because of the context of the situation.)

I love your videos!! I'd like to see a video on the costumes of the new little women film, it threw me full force back into my fashion and costume phase and i absolutely loved the costuming. But, in saying that, ive done research since watching it and i know it wasn't very historically accurate!

Oh you have decided me on this movie :) Psst the blue might also be a modern sentiment and not based strictly on colour theory. My partner is a doctor and let me tell you, light blues are basically all that they wear. I would say that the colour's popularity in the medical workforce probably stemmed from both colour theory and outside factors - such as dye shortages or cost - but that the decision in the movie may have been more for modern day audiences so that we can more immediately identify that she is a nurse, whereas the use of lilac, while accurate, may have thrown test audiences off too much.

Is this really Mina's first video? Or is there something I've missed? If so, I cannot believe how much of a natural she is! What a legend
