On the classic ABC sitcom Bewitched, veteran actress Marion Lorne played Samantha's favorite Aunt Clara. Her character also had the distinction of being one of the few relatives of Samantha that her husband Darrin actually goes along with. But really, what wasn't there to like about her?
Aunt Clara was this gloriously hapless character who was elderly, bumbling, and absent-minded while also being quite lovable. While she always meant well, Aunt Clara's spells typically would backfire in some kind of comedic way. And every time she would enter or exit the scene, she would always do so with an exaggerated fumble, such as clambering out of a chimney or crashing into a wall.
Bewitched fans will likely recall that Aunt Clara suddenly vanished at the end of the fourth season. She was later replaced in season six by Sam's new bungling housekeeper Esmeralda. While Aunt Clara's departure was never really explained, the real reason why Marion Lorne was no longer in the show is actually quite heartbreaking. In this video, we'll get to the bottom of Why Aunt Clara From Bewitched Was Never Seen Again.
We'll also be assessing whether or not there's any validity to the alleged curse that has supposedly afflicted the cast members of the iconic sitcom. Many of the actors and actresses that appeared in the series ended up meeting terrible ends - leading conspiratorial folks to believe that it wasn't just by chance.

You forgot to mention her door handle fetish it wasn’t a made for the character trait it was hers and they used her sack of door nobs (she must’ve brought her collection with her for her characters prop because she was famous for collecting these door knobs; in fact here’s a little legacy note when they were doing the TV show warehouse 13 there’s an episode that uses her collection.) you actually see many of her door knobs in that episode and they even mentioned it at one point in an interview that the door knobs were actually door knobs from her collection.)

I understand from reading that Aunt Clara actually was a collector of door knobs, in her real life. She collected quite a number of door knobs that valued over some hundreds of dollars… She was my favorite actress on Bewitch, next to Darrin, his facial expressions really looked so real, just like Aunt Clara.❤

Both actors (Marion Lorne aka Aunt Clara & Alice Pearce aka Gladys Kravitz) contributed so much to this show. As a kid (in the 60s), I always wondered what had happened to these two when they stopped performing. It was disappointing to say the least. Now of course, we know.

My favorite moment with Marion Lorne was the episode that Endora came in contact with a Massodonia Dodo bird which cause her to lose her powers which Aunt Clara had received. I loved Bewitched and use to watch the shows w g en it first came on the air back in 1964. I was 9 years old when Bewitch first came on the air. The original Gladys Kravitz played by Sandra Pearce was historically funny. The look on her face and the scream that she made was very funny. There were a couple of things that the show never explained was what was Aunt Clara relationship to Endora. Was she Endora's aunt or great aunt and who was Serena's parents and what were their relationship to Maurice. Cousin Edgar was an elf and Samantha's cousin, how did witches and elves intermarriage when the witches council was so against witch and mortal intermarriage? What ever happened to David(Adam) Lawrence?

You left out the zaniness of Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur) who had a recurring role -- also died young at 55 from a heart attack. During her time as Endora in the "Bewitched" series, Agnes Moorhead was nominated in the same year (1967) for 2 Emmy awards -- in "Bewitched," & for her portrayal of the evil Emma Valentine in "The Wild, Wild West." She won for "The Wild, Wild West" episode. In her film career, she had been nominated for an Academy Award 3 times. She appeared in an intense classic episode of "The Twilight Zone" ('The Invaders') where she had no dialogue. Dick York's back problems began during the filming of "They Came From Cordura," (1959) where he played one of the troopers (Pvt. Renziehausen) with Gary Cooper. York was even credited on the one-sheets, so it wasn't a minor role. It was his back issues that derailed York from other adventuresome films to television. He made "Inherit the Wind," (1960) & which was his last film. He made dozens of appearances on major TV series until his 5-year stint in "Bewitched," & his back problems got worse.

My favorite was when she materialized a yacht in the living room. And after it appeared, she was suddently in a nautical outfit, blue blazer, etc, with a white captain’s cap. Her immediate take was to become very “captain-like”, stand up straight, and be commanding. Made me howl.

It’s odd that Uncle Arthur isn’t mentioned once. Paul Lynde had some tragedy himself. His boyfriend fell from the St. Francis hotel in San Francisco in the mid-60’s, and Paul was found dead in his home when he was 50 something, about which there has been a story that he may have died during a tryst with a hustler.

After Bewitched, Elizabeth Montgomery had a successful role as Lizzie Borden in "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" (1975). Thanks to DNA analysis, it was determined that Elizabeth was sixth-cousins once removed from Lizzie. That's a strange coincidence. They do have somewhat of a resemblance to each other. One person said, "I wonder what Elizabeth would have done if she had known she was related to Lizzie Borden?" Would she still take the acting part? I think she would have done it. She was tired of being type-cast as the witch Samantha, and the role changed people's perspective about her. She was nominated for an Emmy as the lead actress in a drama.

Outside the Lizzie Borden film, I also enjoyed her rich work in "The Awakening Land;" in fact, I always thought that, had she been born in the silent era, she might still have had a career; her face and especially her eyes, were incredibly expressive.

@@FactsVerse Have you done a video on character actors? You know. Those actors whom you know but didn't know their names. You watch a show and say, "Hey! The characters Darrin Stevens & Endora were extreme enemies who fought and argued in nearly every episode, with Endora often conjuring up some kind of a spell on him which would have the audience laughing, but in real life Dick York and Agnes Moorehead were the actually the best of friends. It was that chemistry that really pulled it off. When Dick York had to leave the show she was heartbroken. She wasn't as fond of Dick Sargent, but he and Elizabeth Montgomery become good friends. I, myself, much preferred Dick York. He was a lot more lovable than Dick Sargent and I don't think he was anywhere near as good as York. That was a great show. I still love watching the reruns.

Thanks Facts Verse . Excellent video on Bewitched , and too bad about all the great players who passed during or after . Marion Lorne was fantastic as a regular on the Garry Moore variety show in the mid 60’s as the bumbling, fumbling, yet dear lady in many hilarious skits with an up & coming young comedienne...named Carol Burnett. I think Tim Conway and Harvey Corman were also a riot in the cast .

Thank you for your reply. That's too easy. It was a two-part episode. Samantha's lamp broke and Aunt Clara tried fixing it and accidentally conjured up Benjamin Franklin. It was one of Ms. Lorne's most spectacular performances in all of her appearances. Her facial expression when she goofs from her spells is priceless . I remember recording those two episodes on our first VCR back in the '70s during the reruns and I watched it so much, the cassette tape eventually wore out. And now I'm glad I have the complete series in a DVD box set. I always had a soft spot for her like my own grandmother. No matter how badly she messed up, you just wanted to give her a great big hug, forgive her, and love her even more.

Marion Lorne was a treasure - she also made some guest appearances on Your Show of Shows with Sid Caesar. Her performance opposite Robert Walker in Strangers on a Train is priceless - sadly we shall never see her like again.

Beings 1960s it was basically time that killed them. adding 58 years onto their age and some was in their 30s on up during the Bewitched sitcoms I'm not surprised. Even the one's who got cancer probably would have lived only 15 years more if they haven't come down with it. R.I.P we will miss you all.

Elizabeth didn't hate BEWITCHED, but to her, it was in the past. She seldom. Spoke of it, primarily because she did few interviews. It wouldn't be until 1989 when she agreed to do a four part interview for Herbie Pilato's book THE HEWITCHED BOOK, now BEWITCHED FOREVER. Liz would come to call these interviews "cathardic". In the time between 1989 and her death, Liz would do several interviews on BEWITCHED and her other work. These interviews are here on YT. Liz realized that being stereotyped can kill a career. One can point to those who worked on "Star Trek", with a couple of exceptions, as an example. Most of them would work on the ST movies. She was/is adorable.

Unfortunately, several instances of talent leaving us too soon obviously happened several times. However, I feel that such a broad observation dismisses the singular accomplishment of the talented actress Marion Lorne, who alone had so become a staple of the show and more importantly beloved by the audience as Aunt Clara that produces of the show did not replace her role with another actress. That's a statement that can't be said about the other roles which for one reason or another had to be portrayed by different people. We could accept a different Mrs. Kravitz, a new Louise Tate and even an alternate Darrin, but I don't think for a minute that any of us could have accepted a "counterfeit" Aunt Clara or that any actress would envy trying to sell that

Alice Pearce died in 1966. Marion Lorne died in 1968, I think. The one sepia colored picture is of Marion Davies, not Marion Lorne. Dick York may have been destitute and bedridden, but he was a tireless advocate for the homeless until his passing. I learned more about aging from "Aunt Clara" than some real-life people, and maybe a little from "Gladys," too (Gladys #1).

@@FactsVerse Well two stick out for me, The first one is the one where aunt Clara comes to Samantha‘s defence it’s really sweet I mean they were all good but even Darren loved aunt Clara because of the fact that family came first and she didn’t care he was a mortal only one of the relatives that really didn’t care that he wasn’t one of them. And the second one was the one where this woman (evil mortal) tries to have aunt Clara committed because she claims to be magical(OK I am not putting this right Voice To Text Is Not helping me I am physically handicapped.)
