What sad ending for such a talented female, it seems to me her parents didn't show her what she needed the most love & support especially at a young age.

Her story seems so tragic and wouldn't be so much today. Many back then were not accepting of the disabled. Hopefully she has the peace now she couldn't seem to find in her life.

Fascinating post. Maggie Sullavan has been one of my favourite 30s actresses for years from the moment I saw her in Only Yesterday and Back Street (41). Why else would I be here to comment on a rather forgotten star...? She was a marvelously sympathetic actress could indeed make you cry with her. I have read in bios how "difficult" and "demanding" she could be with directors and co-workers. But I was a annoyed to hear that she denied and hid her affliction from Others. I once worked with someone who was in denial of her partial hearing loss in the left ear and believe me, it was maddening to later discover that this was cause of the big problem between us, why we didnt get along, why I found my co-worker so erratic and neurotic. She couldnt always Hear me ! I remember now all the petty contrivances to make sure I was on her Right Side and all the little Notes to communicate the simplest thing. Complicating matters was the fact that I have very low speaking voice, rich in Tone and Annunciation but not great Volume. My co-worker pulled a lot of passive aggressive junk, eventually contriving to get me fired as a "poor team-player" and "communicator". I have never forgiven her to this day for all that scheming and manipulation. Despite my great admiration for Sullavan as actor, I bet she was Holy terror to be around !

Always fascinated with early 1930's pre-code movies, a friend told me about a man in Chicago who had a huge collection of early movies. He transferred them to VHS tapes (this was in the early 1990s) and sold them. The first one I bought was a copy of Margaret Sullavan's first film "Only Yesterday" made in 1933. What a story! Loved it so much, I recently had it put on a dvd. Beautiful film and Margaret Sullavan was great in it. I'm so glad I still have this film. As far as I know, it has never been available to purchase. Thank you for your interesting coverage of this great actress.

Years ago her daughter Brooke wrote a very well received book about the Hayward family. The book is titled “Haywire” and includes a lot of interesting tales about the Fondas as well. It’s a beautifully written, but ultimately tragic memoir of a wealthy, but unhappy family.

It's funny hearing that story about Sullavan being the only person working at the studio that owner Louie B. Mayer, could not bully/intimidate. Her mental instability made her give Mayer the creeps. Everyone else Mayer could terrify in a one to one meeting behind closed doors, but Sullavan always had him on edge when they were in the same room. Even more sad that 2 of Sullavan's 3 kids also ended their lives. The sports bar I used to hang out at had a framed copy of a newspaper front page with the headline mentioning one of her daughter's had killed herself, less than a year after her own death. Actress Clara Blandick had a similar tragic ending, taking her life when she was losing her eyesight and crippled by arthritis.

I’m a massive maggie fan!! i must say this video is well researched- apart from the fact her death was not.. particularly proven to be a suicide, it’s not really known. her story always makes me so sad, she deserved so much better :( this quote by a journalist always gets me: “The thunderous applause of a delighted audience-was it only a dim murmur over the years to Margaret Sullavan?”
