I grew up in Canberra. I miss it. Always have. It's where my heart is. I worked on the Constuction of New Parliament house for over 2 years. I built the glass pyramid dead center of the building beneath the flag. I was just 15 through 17 so very much the junior member of the five man team. I wasn't the contractor or anything. While I didn't lay the marble in the Foyer, they got Italians in for that, I did labour for them and there is a lot of my sweat in that as well. Lol. The Italian marble guys were funny as fk. They couldn't speak a word of English and only knew what they learnt on site so it was F this F that and all knew were swear words. One day one of them came in and he was ranting and carrying on excitedly about the "cocky ones" turns out one of the other contractors had put two cockatoo's in his car. Hahaha. I remember the day the Prime ministers office furniture arrived. I may or may not have got down on my back and signed the underneath of his desk. Haha. Biggest building in the southern hemisphere by the way. Most people will never know just how big it is because 90% of it is not accessible to the public. Miles and miles of tunnels and basements under the ground. We all spent a full six months getting lost almost every day before we knew our way around. That big.

Lake Burley Griffin, Named after Walter Burley Griffin the guy that designed Canberra (and the opera House in Sydney).
@Sthuont2 ай бұрын
@@Shilo-fc3xm American architect Walter Burley Griffin won the international design competition for Canberra in 1912 (and it is broadly based on his design although significantly altered). However, the Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, who won the international design competition for it in 1957. Both architects were screwed by politicians and managerial bureaucrats being politicians and managerial bureaucrats and ruining everything for everyone, and both ended up leaving acrimoniously before finishing their designs... and that's why we can't have nice things.

The colors of Parliament House are the same in all Westminster style democracies. It is taken from the House of Parliament in the UK, with an Australian color tinge (the blue, green you described). The House of Representatives is the people's house, and the Senate is the house of the states. This is taken from US democracy, as is much of our Constitution. As for 1997, the Port Arthur Massacre. This is where 34 people were shot and killed at Port Arthur in Tasmania. Additional persons were shot and wounded. Following that, the horrible man from Western Sydney, Howard, forced his laws through Parliament. No issue better gun laws were needed, but they went too far and became too restricted. Every person deserves their freedom, including those who wish to use guns for lawful purposes. Canberra is an incredible place. I lived there in the 1990s, during college, before leaving Australia. It is double the size now! Kingston was an incredible place to live!

I’ve lived in Canberra for all my 40 years and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else
@Dobuan753 ай бұрын
Virtually no-one needs guns here and those who do can get them with the necessary licensing. They’re about as useful to the 80% of the population that live in urban areas as the ability to fly a helicopter. So it has zero to do with ‘freedom’. Don’t need a gun or a helicopter. Cattle farmers do though, and so they can get them easily enough. Now don’t get me wrong, you do what you want in the USA - we just don’t need them here. We tend to view “freedom” here as the ability to get full free healthcare and not lose our jobs if we get sick or have an accident, etc. no matter how long it takes to recover. We also view freedom as the ability to get a living wage at minimum wage levels. We have one of the highest in the world at AUD$24.10 per hour currently. This means every one of us can live without fear of hunger, abject poverty or that our families, friends, or children will not return from malls, churches, or schools due to random gun violence. The comparative statistics are shocking to us. Again, that’s just what is overwhelmingly popular in our polls here due to our culture, and society, and should in no way suggest any other country should do the same. You do you. As for the parliament, you are correct insomuch as the senate system was adopted but mildly modified from the US system. We have more senators for the larger states (by population) and so numbers can grow in the parliament if populations increase. Glad you liked living in Canberra. I was there in the 1990s too at the Australian National University. It has changed a lot, and in my opinion for the better, since then. Especially after the horror bushfires of 2003 tore through so much of the town including destroying the entire Stromlo Forest area.

Agreed. Gareema place is a bit of a dead zone in colder months; a reality brought about by the low-density outward spread of Canberra, combined with the climate. To overcome this, Canberra would be better suited with higher density accommodation in the city centre itself, and smaller cosier alleys with ground floor small cafes, bars, and performance spaces. Braddon has started down this path, so it is possible.
