I had a boss who would say “don’t talk back”. And it took reflection to realize, “i’m not arguing the point, I’m explaining my thinking because I care and my intentions are good.”

Yes! I have had countless experiences like this at work, and then if I can't convince someone I will google it. I had one coworker say he admired that I was willing to just google it and risk being proven wrong, but the reality of the situation is exactly what you're saying here
