I'm Autistic, diagnosed at 5, what I love about Sonic is the earnestness, it doesnt feel like they are trying to earn the mainstream's approval, this is also why I love Dark Souls, both series' have huge setpiece worlds with endless possibilities and some absurd elements yet take themselves dead seriously, that mix of whimsy and self seriousness is often missing from modern media that tries to lampshade anything with a wink to the audience.
