I wish Canada would adopt the central recycling sorting containers of Europe. It’s like a clothing donation bin, but for bottles, cardboard, and waste. The material is collected in large underground bins which are emptied by the city. It’s more efficient than trucks driving through alleyways collecting from thousands of homes.

In my building, pizza boxes and soiled food wrappers are always supposed to go in compost.

I always tear my pizza boxes in half. The bottom is obviously too greasy for recycling, but the top is often spotless.

well the news story is misleading sort of but it didnt tell me why B.C. itself is better at recycling then most provinces other then what i already know the program..so why is B.C better at recycling?
@gleneaglegreenteam14565 жыл бұрын
We have lower contamination rates in BC (mostly due to education campaigns) and our recycling system is run by a supplier-funded non-for-profit which recycles the materials within the province and doesn't need to worry about fluctuating market prices (even if it costs more the recycle it than throw it out, Recycle BC needs to raise supplier fees instead of sending it to landfill or incinirator).

It is much better than Manitoba, I can vouch for that.
I have experience in this work, highly experienced. Do you need employees?

Much better than Edmonton, there is no blue bins u have to buy own blue bag and everything is all mixed together, I wonder if they even separate it.
@Nicholas-f55 жыл бұрын
They do sort recyclables in a mixed system.

Edmonton doesn't use a pipeline to flush billions of liters of untreated raw sewage into the ocean like the good environmentalists in Victoria do.

So companys outside bc dont pay a package fee....
@gleneaglegreenteam14565 жыл бұрын
Hi WildandLiving, that's a great question! The fee also applies to products sold in BC, so the importer or retailer would be responsible for the fee if the company isn't in BC. That being said, if you buy products online and they're shipped from out of the province, Recycle BC doesn't get the fee unless if a company decides to voluntarly pay it.

What a joke. The only way to save the environment is to fine people that don't recycle.

Where I live in BC they just throw the recycling and trash into the same landfill. It's a lie...

Once again BC gets to take out everyone else's trash.

98% of plastic collected stays in BC

As far as I know, there is no material recovery facility in BC. These recyclables are sorted again, baled and shipped overseas. Raw materials are still so much cheaper to manufacture. The municipalities pay private recycling companies to collect and "process" the recyclables. The only way to get rid of plastic pollution is to ban single-use plastic containers and packaging. Used paper, metal and glass containers are easier to recycle locally.

Merlin Plastics in Delta has a plant able to sort Plastics, pelletise, and reprocess them for sale. Almost 100% of BC plastics recycled including containers, bags, and flexible plastic packaging goes there.
