One of my dream jobs is becoming a musician. And I want to change the way we listen to music in the future. Every goal of a musician is to become commercially succesful. I want to be a succesful musician. But without using fucking auto tune. I also need to avoid to writing cheesy lyrics. I can play the guitar and I've been playing it for quite a while. I want to bring back the use of intruments to the music industry. The thing I'm scared of is that my music in the future wouldn't be succesful. Even if it was succesful, I want people to be inspired to write songs like I do. Like what Bob Dylan said, the main goal of an artist is to inspire.

One thing i really like about Amazon is that with most CD's you get the MP3 version immediately after buying the physical copy,so if you can't wait for the CD version you can jam to the MP3 while you're waiting for your beloved CD.I wish i would've known that before buying "The Bends" by Radiohead :(

The people or the artists need to buy their own slice of the distribution network or airwaves if any of this is going to change long term. You can have all the greatest artists in the world but unless the industry is going to support them and promote them then forget it. I believe that people that really are into music are a minority. It's not as widespread as we think it is. Most people listen to music via fashion/hype and will drop a band when something else comes along. Those people aren't actually into music

In America, they tend to settle for mediocre and bland music and then dumb down the people to think it is music. America tends to be corporate, which is why the musical climate and trends got worse all for quick bucks. But in Europe as well as Japan, they seem to put effort into their work, that heavy metal and rock are still popular there and they don't seem to have ever make dull, bland, stale, mediocre music originating there...mostly. At least those places are better than America in terms of music because while America is corporate and trendy, Europe and Japan are at least, in a way, different and unique.

I like the message here. I think it would be fair to add that if you can't find a music store near you that carries music you enjoy, buy some physical copies online. Go to the band website, or even amazon and buy a CD or vinyl. It's supply and demand, and we need to bring back the demand for physical music.

We are absolutely to blame for crappy music. I haven't purchased any music in ages. We need to vote with our money. If enough of us buy an album now and then; we might not see as much crap being put out there. The more good music is promoted the more the masses will be exposed to it. If people are exposed to good bands/artists they might not be as likely to buy stuff from the crappy artists.

Great video, a lot of truth in this. Do you think you could address something in a future video? It's this phenomena I've been noticing lately. Like, most of the people I know from school or around town like Sweet Child O'Mine by GNR, but don't know the rest of their music. Same thing with Journey and "Don't Stop Believing". It's like they refuse to find more music to enjoy by those artists than what's socially acceptable. Just something to think about...

i love physical copies because of that same feeling of ownership, and all the neat things you can see in booklets, be it in the artwork, lyrics, its a full experience along with the music. plus, i've experienced the "decay effect" between an mp3 or a download versus an album. Vehemence's song "Kill For God" sounded good as an mp3, good enough for me to buy their album "Helping the World to See." "Kill For God" on the album....holy fuck my mp3 was missing layers! rapes on disc, blows on mp3.

One thing that I think stands in the way for heavy metal/rock becomming more popular, is that people don't allow them to. If a band becomes moderate succesfull, some folks will begin calling them sellouts for no particular reason. They are afraid that their favorite band will become mainstream because they want to feel special for listening to them.

Great video, I can totally appreciate this from a financial perspective. Though I guess there is no way of telling the less scrupulous to go out and buy the music legit - The power is totally in their hands, not ours. If people can get it for free and don't get any satisfaction from supporting the artist, they won't pay for it. This is a situation we can't recover from, so I just give my music to those wanting to try it out, and be grateful for those that bought it :)

A major problem that should be noted is that even if we do have somewhat of a consensus on what bad music is, we all have different tastes. Most of the bands I see people bringing up in the comments, nearly all the modern bands people talk about, are garbage to my ears. Because 60's and early 70's music got me spoiled on a compositional aesthetic and sense of production that I feel is completely lacking even in modern artists who do play their own instruments, write their own songs, and play their instruments really well on a technical level. Heck, I even went through a phase where I was hating on Pink Floyd fans for liking "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon", who knew nothing about the kind of creative and improvisational music Syd Barrett made, which to me holds so much more potential than the most popular works. I can't say I enjoy everything from the 70's, and apart from hip-hop, absolutely nothing from the 80's, and very little from the 90's onwards. I don't like metal outside Black Sabbath and early Metallica. Even modern bands I used to enjoy aren't releasing albums I like anymore, and most of the modern bands that people who like the genres I do are just plain boring to me. So it's hard to relate. To create music that we can all agree to enjoy is one of the greatest challenges facing today's musical landscape. We all have different tastes and opinions.

As I CKN is talking about rock music not metal, the first thing that comes to my mind is that the genre in this form is exhausted - I haven't heard anything really exciting for years and years - we won't see another Rolling Stone or The Doors or Bruce Sprinsteen. Our generation really needs something new - I wanna feel shellshocked like my grandpa one morning in the 50s turning on the radio and hearing Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry

As much as i would love to help record stores...they must keep prices on albums up in order to keep their doors open...and sometimes they charge a whole 5-10$ more!!!! I know that may not sound like a lot but i could buy an album on sale for that with BOTH physical and mp3 for that extra 5!!!(Let alone 10 )

What I think Heavy Metal needs more of, is complation CDs. You see tons every year for pop, rap and classic Rock CDs. Multiple times a year you will have "Now that's what I call music!" or "The BEST Driving Songs/Dad Rocks." Heavy Metal needs more compilations from record lables to go out there and spread the word of bands the masses would have never heard of. (tbc)

I really love the record store and the vinyl format in general. In fact, just this past weekend, I ordered six records and I imagine I'll be going to the record store at the earliest possible convenience and picking up a couple more. Some of my friends are also into vinyl. Saying that, I do usually pirate my music due to the fact that I'm a broke college student, but if I like an artist, I'll try to pick up their albums on vinyl at some point.

Any album being on vinyl does not make crap music better. Crap music is crap music is crap music. The music is poorly written. The lyrics are poorly written. The singers can't sing no one plays real guitars, or bass, or even drums any more. Pop music is crap these days same with country, rap, hip hop, and to a point even rock and metal. So why do you think buying something on vinyl makes it better?

How have you come to the conclusion that all modern music is bad? Have you listened to all of it? Because that's physically impossible. For a good example of modern metal, go listen to The Ocean's 2013 album, "Pelagial," anything by maudlin of the Well, Between the Buried and Me, Devin Townsend Project, Kayo Dot's "Hubardo," early Wolves in the Throne Room, recent Cattle Decapitation, or anything The Black Dahlia Murder have put out since "Nocturnal." As far as pop music goes, I don't really listen to much that would be considered "popular," except maybe the Gorillaz, but if you're referring to anything electronic, check out literally anything by Pretty Lights, especially his most recent album, "A Color Map of the Sun" (by the way, if you, like me, have ever actually tried to make electronic music, you'd know that it's friggin hard to make good music on a computer, maybe even more difficult than making it with physical instruments) or Animal Collective. Also, this year alone gave us David Bowie's "Black Star" and Radiohead's "A Moon-Shaped Pool." For something on the softer side of metal or the harder side of rock but with clean vocals, try Children of Nova, Thank You Scientist, Coheed and Cambria, or the Mars Volta. For Hip Hop, try MF DOOM, Quasimoto, Death Grips, Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, The Creator, and even Kanye has put out some good tracks. As far as modern country, yeah there really isn't any that's good, but if your looking for good music in that general style, folk like Jonathan Coulton and folk punk like Andrew Jackson Jihad have some serious substance to offer. The point is, modern music isn't all Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj like the le wrong generation 12-year-olds like to say it is. There's always been trashy music released just to make a quick buck and the always will be. That music doesn't stand the test of time, and the shitty party pop and rap of today won't be remembered 50 years from now any more than the trashy bubblegum pop of the 60's is remembered today. As far as why I go for vinyl, I just like to collect them because it feels more personal for me, or something like that. I can't tell if it sounds better than any other format and I don't really care. Also, as a side note, I know they can be really stupid and hipster-y, but /mu/ on 4chan has helped me find some seriously amazing modern music.

It's because the "artists" and the fans expectations are so low, that when something comes out, it's the same or just as bad as the last song and people don't have nothing else to listen to, so they just say screw it, and settle listening to whatever the mainstream pumps out. It's sickening in my opinion. Alot of these so called artists are basically marketing their stuff. The music can be horrible, but if you know how to market, you can get alot more views and people following you, no matter how garbage you are. My main problem is the marketing and business side. I love music and I know how to produce and lay down a song, but I have not been taught nothing, and have to figure out all of the marketing and business side for myself. I will not suck up to this bandwagon way of how things work, and will not be like every other musician out here, so it will be alot harder for me to succeed, and I'm cool with that. Man, shit has changed big time since 2013 when this video was made. It's insane right now how garbage most of this music is today.

I am currently in a place where they don't even sell genuine CD's. When I was going to music college in Los Angeles I used to go down to Amoeba Music Store to get all my music. If there was a legitimate store out here I would go right way and buy stuff. So how do I deal with this? I still do order Physical Cd's of my favourite artists which costs me a lot more considering the international shipping cost. But the ones that are new that I like,I buy their stuff digitally due to the reasons above.

The problem around where I live there is absolutely no record stores. Basically to get a record for me its going to have to be bought online or at a supermarket. The last 3 albums I bought though were: Black Sabbath's 13 on pre-order, Megadeth's Super Collider, and Tool's Aenima.
