I really enjoyed how positive and chill this whole conversation was, along with making sure to change your perspective every once in a while to make sure you grow. Making sure I also stay away from the algorithmic side of these platforms has been a great way for me to enjoy the content that I follow without mindlessly scrolling for hours at a time. These things are tools, just make sure you use them in constructive ways.

I always feel sorry for Jake, because I know people slam on him for being a conservative of some flavor. I don't agree with him on a lot of things, but hes consistent and has thought out his position. People fall into tribal thought though and see conservative and immediately lump him in with the people who don't think through their stances on that side (which a lot of conservatives do to liberals as well to be clear).

Totally! He's law school trained. He knows how to articulate the arguments on either side without giving away his personal leaning. I think of him more like the mediator of the group rather than the "conservative." Keeps these pods from being one-sided pilings-on.

I don't use the algorithmic view on most apps anymore. For example, on Twitter, if there aren't more tweets from people I follow, I leave. The same goes for KZbin - if there are no new videos in my sub box, I go somewhere else. However, I sometimes find myself checking the same few websites repeatedly in a short amount of time.
@GoldenCoastGTA4 ай бұрын
That's a little silly and obtuse. I've never been served so much relevant new things than on Tiktok, followed by KZbin, and surprisingly after many right wing waves attempts by the little dictator, Twitter too (which, I don't know how it holds with that skeleton crew, but I've been served many new game dev stuff for example). Tiktok specifically always enriches my interests with new creators. Just discovered a british documentary creator, very humorous and informative. Y'all are sleeping on those algos. Always use the tools they give, e.g. "not interested" and liking stuff.

The difficult thing about big scale in general (industrialization with big corporations, big cities, globalization etc), it is difficult to care about that many people or situations that far away etc. It is also a principal in economics with the free loader problem. When you have a smaller community, you know the people around you, their needs, work, pains etc and so you put your part into your smaller community as everybody else because, if it is small enough, it is clear when someone is free loading and it will be outed quickly. Regulation can be good and bad. The important thing is how it is implemented.

21:48 I mostly agree with you Jake, but I think you're mistaken to speak of a "nation" when it comes to China. A nation designates the people, and as we all know the people have close to no say in what the Chinese government decides. They're not doing it to preserve their culture, they're doing it to prevent external influence and control information. That's why banning TikTok is a problem in a democracy. On the one hand, we shouldn't try to control information, but on the other hand the Chinese government is clearly taking advantage of this to manipulate information.

The more I see people use it and the shorter things get, the worse off everyone is. I get that quick "hehe's" are nice, but I can't be bothered with watching anything shorter than 15 mins myself (music videos being the exception), which is why I hate how YT keeps changing how you add videos to watch later on the front page. They keep shuffling between three different methods every few weeks. No idea what that is about. 1-4 hour long video podcasts and Warhammer 40k lore videos for me, thanks.

I technically have a facebook account just for my parents and sisters which I don't look at (I use messenger), before that i had Myspace for a minute but that seems like a blink of the eye. Never used twitter, never used Instagram, I've never seen tiktok. Basically youtube and reddit are where I spend any substantial time, and that's enough.

A government is the system or group of people governing an organized community. A corporation is an organization-usually a group of people or a company-authorized by the state to act as a single entity. Democracy is by definition corporate governance
@wanttodor_mir Жыл бұрын
@@JoshJamesification No, you are simply spreading a fallacy that perpetuates the false dream of neo-liberalism. A democratic government is a representation of the people. It doesn't claim the power unilaterally, but is elected by the majority and also changed by the people if it doesn't meet their expectations (as opposed to a corporation). The government is the tool that lets you control corporations and make sure they respect the rules of the game, which otherwise no average Joe would have the power for on his own. Therefore the government is the people.

I definitely agree with jake on the point that a major aspect is how we as consumers make decisions, but I think he's missing something. Our brains are physically wired to do what is easier or brings less discomfort, but we also have a consciousness and can act against our instincts. However, I don't think it's at all possible to really make conscious decisions (exercise "free will" if you want) if you are not aware at how much you can't control. It's like how obesity is technically a factor of your personal choices, but is more practically a consequence of your environment encouraging a sedentary life and/or consumption of unhealthy food. People raised with smart phones can't not use them until they realize they can't make the decision not to use them. So, when we legislate these things, I think it's important to recognize our control over corporation's actions (they will be tyrants if we allow them) is directly linked to our control over our decisions as consumers.

@VMYeahVN Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's my problem with the TikTok ban, is that it has nothing to actually do with TikTok. Every single American owned/backed social media does exactly the same things TikTok does. The only issue to the government is TikTok's parent company is Chinese and thus aren't entirely under U.S. control. That's all this is. If it was actually about data security/privacy. They would be trying to pass data privacy regulation laws that protect users. Not banning individual apps/sites.

Ten years back you could say it was on the way to open itself to world but with gradual xijinping rise it resends back to old ways more a kin malzadon, look at the differences between west facing media and china facing media, you will need somebody to translate it for you of courses, o only know about Twitter account called the great translation movement, you also have the cina show podcast and china fact checkers made by two folk who lived in china for about ten years and married to chines woman

True, and it seems like the crew is okay with their data being stolen, so it doesn’t matter if TikTok gets banned. Jordan C. went on that whole rant about mental health etc., but TikTok isn’t the culprit for that. It’s that parents are raising their kids with iPads and social media and aren’t available for their kids anymore. So removing TikTok isn’t going to fix anything really, all the other big media apps are just going to take over the empty space. Insta will just become a shittier version of Tiktok and so on.
