Why Barefoot Shoes? Especially in WINTER?!

Why would someone want barefoot shoes? In the WINTER?! This is why I wear barefoot sandals all summer, and why I just picked up a pare of the most comfortable boots on earth for the winter. And how it frees you up from old injuries you never knew were caused by your regular shoes with their terrible arch support, raised heels and tight fit.
I wear the size 11 Xero Z Trail Sandals, but size 11 shoes were too small. The Xero Denver size 12 were perfect for me, the Xero Xcursion 12 was still too small. So be careful on those sizes, though you can always exchange them just don't wear the outside :) All are vegan except the evil Tracker FG.

Altra (running shoes/trail shoes) has built their entire brand specifically designed around the foot shaped toe box and making sure it’s wide enough. Your toes can spread naturally in them. You also need to make sure that your socks aren’t compressing your toes together in any way. People don’t realize just how much socks put pressure on your foot spread. I’ll post a link, but if somehow FB removes it, you can just search Altra dot com .

Completely agree, barefoot shoes are the best! I use to get knee pain and was starting to get lower back pain. My while life I wore "running shoes". It took time for my feet to adapt to the barefoot shoes "I wear Vivobarefoot", I had to rotate them with normal shoes for a couple of months, but my knee and back pain cleared up, and, after having flat feet my whole life, I started to get arches! Normal shoes are a cast that overtime atrophy your feet.

Same, I'm looking for something that doesn't have separate toes, not just because they look kind of silly, but also, these Canadian winters make it so you need your toes a bit closer to stay warm. I will say, the Vibram Ice-Trek sole on their insulated ones, is the best on ice (I can walk 5-6km/h on solid ice with them), but it does get cold, even with socks. I'm looking at Xero or Lems.

Been wearing minimalist shoes for 5 years. A good boot is the Belleville TR102 Minimalist Training Boot. 5 mil drop, non slip sole. Nice and light. You can remove the insole and/or order wide and then wear extra socks for winter. Not vegan though, and they definitely have a tactical mall cop vibe. The Lem's Boulder Boot in black is vegan, wicked comfortable with a wide toe box. Not really a winter boot. Lem's is a favorite in general. Also love the Vivobarefoot Scott, though it's expensive and my pair didn't last very long.

You can buy Vivobarefoot shoes/boots in Canada...the exact ones you showed in the photo you can order through MEC. Though I ordered a pair of boots directly from the website to Canada on Black Friday ...they showed up at my door on Tuesday...it was crazy fast shipping. I was shocked. I ordered the Vivobarefoot women's Fulham boots. And Vivobarefoot make a men's boot specifically for winter snow conditions. I believe it is called snow tracker SG. I hope you try them and do a video. I know a lot of people think they are 'too expensive'. First, I would say watch the documentary on Netflix called 'The True Cost'. It's about the fashion industry and that includes shoes. People have become used to paying $20 for a pair of shoes/ boots. The quality is not there so they will not really last ( planned obsolescence) and for the shoes to be that cheap someone has paid the price. Secondly, as you touched on in this video, the health of your feet can effect your entire body and therefore health and having health problems is a lot more expensive. I think it is a good investment to purchase quality, 'natural'/ minimal shoes and boots. And finally, in Canada, if I do not want to by a $20 cheap boots at Wal- Mart ( and even then we can't get a boot for $20 here, cheap boots would be $50-$60 at least). If I want to purchase a better , higher quality 'normal' brand, on average a pair of quality boots would cost almost $200 by the time we pay taxes on top of it. And I just purchased a pair of Vivobarefoot boots on Black Friday and got them with taxes, duty ,shipping everything included for $200 CA . That is actually less then any 'conventional ' quality boot I can by here in a shoe store. So I don't think they are expensive at all. We need to be buying better quality shoes/ clothing that lasts longer, is classic style ( not chasing fads/ trends) and not so many. Less but better.

Been barefoot for approx 9 years now. Started with vibrams, but switched to completely barefoot after 1.5 years. When it's too cold I prefer my finnish Feelmax boots or my german Wildlings. Recently ordered a pair of polish Tadeevo tatra to try out. Just make sure the soles are as thin as possible. People think that a thick sole protects better against the cold, but your feet create heat by moving. The thicker the sole, the less you create your own warmth.

I have always worn flat shoes because I am tall. They aren't as attractive as heels, for a woman, though. I think you only need arch support if you are overweight. I was a normal weight, and my feet were fine for 33 years, and then I gained weight. I had pain walking until a friend suggested arch supports. Those plastic things the podiatrist made were uncomfortable. So I started wearing New Balance shoes. They have good arch supports, and many, many sizes. They are the only ones my son with Spina Bifida (no kidding) can wear over his braces. In the summer I wear Birkenstocks. At home I wear Haflinger slip-on wool and cork shoes. I LOVE these. That pain is gone, so I could walk more and lost some weight. I had Fibromyalgia until I changed my diet 12 years ago. Now that pain is gone, too. I think someone could make a lot of money making boots that are grounded to the Earth. I'm trying to find some. I would make my current hiking boots (Merrell) grounded, but I'm afraid they wouldn't be waterproof then. You are probably too young to remember this, but people used to make a sound when they walked. Everyone did, unless they were barefoot. I kind of miss that. Nobody could sneak up on you. You can hear this in old movies. It's even used in the plot sometimes. People wore leather shoes with hard soles that lasted a long time. I used to have hiking boots with hard rubber Vibram soles that made a sound on pavement and floors. I think it helps your bones grow to hit the ground hard enough to make a sound when you walk. I have long legs and good bones at 60. Barefoot is best for grounding, but I live in an urban area. I used to walk 2 miles along the river on a smooth dirt path. I found that I could walk a lot further barefoot on dirt than on the paved bike trail nearby. For some reason, I enjoy watching Shoemakers make and repair leather shoes. I guess it's a dying craft. Shoes were expensive, but they could last almost a lifetime, if you took care of them and repaired them when needed. That is less wasteful. And they eventually conformed to your feet as you wore them. And the leather and cotton/hemp laces biodegrade completely, unlike fossil oil-based plastic materials.

I walk 5 miles per day in the morning. I gradually wore them until I could make the full 5 miles. It may not be for everyone, but I no longer have lower back pain, knee pain or get this....no foot pain. Even with the orthotics, my feet would hurt after a day of walking around. Now, nothing! Once you start wearing barefoot shoes you will never go back to conventional footwear! I have Vivobarefoot shoes and also some Xero shoes. They make a winter boot now (Alpine Winter Barefoot boot), which I have and are great! Waterproof and very warm. I live in Canada as well and I've used them in the snow and also attached to snowshoes....with no problems!

for canada winters you should get the lems boulder boots, they have waterproof ones and ones that are not water proof and also vegan options

Most shoes suck when you’ve got wide feet. I have break most my shoes in and wait for them to stretch until they’re relatively comfy

Get some G.H. Bass Weejuns (loafers). They still make soles with leather so when you walk you can connect to the grounding energy of the earth.

Gore-Tex is supposed to be both waterproof & breathable. Perhaps you have the vegan, Beyond Gore-Tex, fake version.

Supposed to be. Waterproof - yes, until it gets dirty. Think breathable is a relative term. I still sweat like a pig in Gore-Tex jackets.

I've been wearing barefoot for years now, It didn't make me feel more connected to the earth or give me any hippy energy, but my back problem completely went away, so there's that at least. (mainly VEVO)

I LOVE Crocs. They mimic barefoot You have lots of room You can feel what's under you. People make fun of them. They just don't get it. I went into a sporting goods store that just opened up by me today looking for an air mattress. And what did I behold? Crocs of every size and color. I was in heaven Forget the air mattress (not really found that at "At Home" a great big lovely store" But I wore orange Crocs for so long. I thought I'd be a grown up and I got grey. Love them. I wear them all year but I am in the Houston area But I did in Missouri too. Do you know where I am? I mean it doesn't snow

I found Altra brand about 14 months ago. I use the Lone Peak 4 Mid RSM as my winter boots. Fantastic until the snow gets deep. Getting that grounding back is a feature ive been waiting for. Seems like we are really close to it. It will spread rapidly across all alternative natural foot wear brands.

Ever since a foot injury where my muscles atrophied, I have worn good running shoes. I was unable to walk and putting pressure on my leg would hurt my foot and cramp my leg hurting what was left of my muscle (if any). I also felt as if f I was going to snap my bone from no muscle support and too much pressure on it (unbroken just no muscle support). I. was unable to walk at all. but when I put the running shoes on I could with the help of crutches (the pain was gone). I have healed since then and I still wear them just because they must help the joints and overall body. After all, they are made for high impact movements so lowering impact throughout life makes sense to me.

I use barefoot shoes in the summer and at work but those vivobarefoot winter shoes are not barefoot or zero drop in my opinion, they feel like regular clunky winter boots, I returned them. Maybe i'll try these instead.

GoreTex is notorious for not breathing in subfreezing temps. Not sure if the five degrees was in F or C, but the key is to just aclimate to cold weather looking at the parka, & bomber you are wearing it seems you could better acclimate to cold weather (start doing cold showers, or other forms of cold exposure, & eat more good fats like animal fats). If you need to wear something wear quality wool socks not Goretex, even with your sandals if you must. Even when your foot gets briefly wet wool is still insulative, For a minimalist boot the Belleville Tactical Research Mini Mil has been a good work boot/everday (when I need footware) piece of footware when barefoot, or sandals won't fly.
