Why Being an Audio Engineer is so Cool | No Fun Club

In this episode of What Do You Do we meet Sierra Noble, Riley Hill, and Rob Hill as they teach us a little bit about what it takes to be an audio engineer. We go behind the scenes in the No Fun Club in Winnipeg and witness how cool the studio is.
Being an audio engineer is a profession that anyone can get into and anyone can start from home. There are free resources everywhere, but if you'd like more structure in your learning, there are specific schools that you can go to. Search up what schools might be in your area!
It's always great to be reminded that a career is not only about the money, but how much you enjoy it. You'll spend the majority of your life working, so try to keep that in mind when choosing a career. But also don't feel like you have to get it right the first time! Nowadays, it's normal to have multiple different careers in your life. So go exploring!

I work in a live environment, and can't justify the analog outboard gear these days. Very interested in opposing opinions from people that don't have to move around. Beautiful vid!

I came through from doing front of house in the late 70's, and who you knew was almost as important as your chops, if you had a good rap, showed up early, straight and sober, word got around. Many nights of studio tan and the sleeping bag in the break room. Commitment was everything, run cables, move mikes, get more 2", degauss heads, get coffees, sit in the half darkness for hours, just watching. Completely different these days

@@wdyd.series how long is a piece of string..lol The sound engineer market is saturated, has been for ages, you cannot depend on making a living out of it, you're better off having a Uber or something as a flexible main gig and mix on the side, it took a very good mate and legendary engineer 6 years to make it in Vancouver, which hosted some of the finest and most popular studios in Canada at that time. The job is to realise the artist's vision, you are that conduit, nothing more. I had a client who wasn't satisfied with his acoustic sound, so I plastered four piezo mikes on the walls along with the X-Y close mikes and a U-87 four feet away, that fixed that. That's your training and thinking outside the box you have to know. Stuff like that.. But reality is I'm older and irrelevant now, go out and make the mistakes, learn from them and move on... Stay humble

Hey, I’m the creator of the show and I started right out of high school doing freelance video work. I’ve been completely self taught. I’m not an audio engineer, but the same things might apply. I suggest just starting to recording as much stuff as you can right now. Focus on projects with your friends that you really enjoy and you’ll quickly learn, and discover what you need to learn. Get a mic or two and begin learning audio fundamentals in a digital audio workstation. Reaper is a free one that you could use. It’s going to be a lifelong process, but if you really put the time in, you’ll go really far. I would see if you could also shadow someone or do an internship while you’re still in school and get that hands on experience.

That's Awesome to hear! I'm also in High School, currently doing my final year🤩 What I would recommend, which is something I'm also currently doing, is start making connections and getting to know people in the industry by finding or emailing some local Studios or Live Sound companies in the area that you live and find out if you'd be able to job shadow there and get some experience. Another thing you can do is start going to some shows or productions in the area and start seeing how the audio industry operates another helpful thing would be to start familiarizing yourself with Audio through KZbin video and the Social Media platforms of so of the big Audio Brands and Sound Companies. - All the best mate🙌

Well, it is true that not as many women do an audio engineering as there is men, but why does somebody sexual orientation matter when you’re making music? I’ve been an audio professional for 38 years and I have worked with so many gay people throughout my career, I think that statement was inaccurate. Who you choose to sleep with should only come up if you’re planning to be intimate with someone. Your sexual preference should never matter when you’re trying to be a professional. So just drop it please. Nobody cares. We really don’t and we never have.

Wow this turned into a liberal propaganda video pretty quick. Why do people always have to bring gender and race into every thing now a days. This is the reason these "issues" exist. Most people really don't care honestly. But when it's brought up very two seconds and has nothing to do with the topic at hand it becomes just redundant. There's always been women and queer people in music. People are just blind.
