The Nice thing with the trappist Beers is that they don't try to reinvent themselves all the time to make more Profit. They have their Beers which sell enough and they keep it with that. So when you like one, you know it Will always be the same. There are many Belgian Brewers who do the same. Many of the large Brewers however constantly try to be more appealing or create 20 different flavors that make Lil Sense.

@@Diggnuts wauw your easily offended. Now I used Inbev because I have found out most Americans tend to care more about size, the bigger the better. Now excuse me I had no idea I was dealing with a superior specimen. The fact that you have figured out already that a 5 year old has a mind of it's own is a giveaway. You might want to consider to react a bit less toxic, no one asked for it. And I sure didn't react to you with the intention of offending you If you talk about quality then yes Belgium still wins, and this is subjective. Depending on what style of beer you prefer there will always be a county that has the most beers you prefer. But if you do a quick search on best beer county in the world and you scroll trough the list of websites, well as far as I went Belgium ranked nr1 most of the times. And yes it's a matter of pride as well. If you live in a county as small as Belgium there is little to be proud of when your comparing with other county's. I think that our best known landmark is a little boy pissing on the street in Brussels so woohoo great for us. So when it comes to beer, chocolate and fries we could get a bit defensive.
@Diggnuts3 жыл бұрын
@@stijnvanderveken The word "offended", you are using it incorrectly or you do not precisely know what it means. You can't possibly offend me at all, and I'll be as "toxic" as I bloody well please. "If you talk about quality then yes Belgium still wins, and this is subjective. " Nonsense. Quality and consistency are measurable. The "it's subjective" defence is always a sign of a lacking or non existent argument. A beer culture like yours that still vehemently uses the archaic method to produce something like Lambic and Geuze can't possibly claim to be of high standards. Do you understand that simple concept? You should understand that the main ingredient of most special beers from Belgium is simply "hype". Sure there are a couple of pretty good beers, but there is also a lot of mediocre fluff, in fact that is the majority. It is only by a mythical and undeserved reputation that Belgian beers are ranked higher than they should be. If you watch beer rating sites, which sound a bit like wanking off to me, you might have noticed that the last couple of years, non-belgian brewers have started out-competing Belgian brewers. If you care about these things, surely you know this? The (false) pride bit I understand. I have been to Belgium a couple of times (to many) and it is a miserable place. It is dirty, unfriendly, uninteresting, boring, ugly and the people generally have a crippling sense of self loathing that is projected in a way that makes interacting with a Belgian very unpleasant. So I understand why you try to hold on to that myth that despite being a shit country, at least you are best at some things. Well, that is an illusion! Belgian beer culture is, on average, just mediocre just like the Netherlands, only they do not bitch about it. If you want to see proper beer culture, go to Germany. Those guys take it seriously and are able to consistently produce quality and have true masterful variation. I would be happy to go into detail for you why you are mistaken about Belgian beer culture and why it actually is quite overrated on every level.

The distinction between trappist beers and other abbey beers is a formal one: only certain abbeys adhere to the order of "Trappists". There are 13 such abbey-breweries in the world, only 6 of which in Belgium, one of them being Chimay. Yes, they have become a household name in the world of beer, but they vary among them, and their qualities are not exclusive. The tastes vary by a lot as most of these breweries offer different varieties. The three flavors offered by Chimay (blonde, lighter brown, darker brown) are already very different. The dark one has similar but still differentiable taste as Rochefort 10 or Westvleteren. The blond one, a triple, is akin to the triples of other trappists, like Westmalle. Orval produces only one variety, which is very distinguishable in its amber color and specific taste. Another major difference is the extent to which these breweries are profit oriented. In the case of Westvleteren or Orval, they limit their production to what is needed for self sustainability. Other breweries operate more like commercial entities, though the abbeys still have their stake and say. As such you can't really talk about the taste or process of "Trappist beer". There are other abbey beers too, with equally varying degrees of profit orientation.

You want to pour a bottle hard to release the CO2, it will settle the same way as if you nicely pour it. As for yeast, the 2nd ferment is also an intended aspect of the flavor and character, nobody is putting yeast in as an obstacle to avoid, it's part of the product, and there's no way it would be in chunks unless you just poured the yeast in, brewers can time their distribution, and they do, especially with 2nd ferments. Which is one of the biggest cons in beer history. If you really want that, get St. Bernardus Abt. 12. Basically the same thing.
@TexanInItaly3 жыл бұрын
@@Diggnuts I agree, its very close. But as a beer drinker, you have to try it at least once. I paid $17 a bottle though.
@TexanInItaly3 жыл бұрын
@@Diggnuts I wouldn't say it's a con though, it's supply and demand.
@Diggnuts3 жыл бұрын
@@TexanInItaly Funny thing is that Abt 12 probably is more like the old Westvleteren because Watou still uses the original yeast strain while Westvleteren started using Westmalle yeast. In that sense I really see no reason for anybody to try it because of the scarcity and hype. A rational and reasonable person will get the same experience from Abt 12.
@Diggnuts3 жыл бұрын
@@TexanInItaly Of course it is a con! The scarcity and archaic selling method is purely for show. A show that seemingly convinces people that this beer is the bestast eva! Which is of course is not. It is not even a top 3 beer.

i did a construction job at the monastery in Westmalle a long time a go. When i asked the monks they told me they drink beer almost every day. They don't drink the heavy stuff though, they brew their own private supply which is much lower in alcohol by volume.

Here is my own hall of fame of best draft beers, by situations and only generic big brands 1. Hoegaarden (for every situation a good draft of hoegaarden is always right) 2. Asahi (this would be controversial, but asahi is a dry type that is almost always right) 3. Carlsberg (again only going for the brands. This danish pilsner is cold fresh and golden) Of course the best beers would be stuff that transcends simple brands.
Leffe is the best trappist I've tried yet, it's awesome and has very complex smokey and savoury notes with some sweet ones, and when I sip it, I am suddenly thinking about a banana flavor for some reason, but I'm the only one I guess who tastes a banana note.. It's craft beer before craft beer.. before all these little breweries got so awesome, but modern craft beer still doesn't touch the real deal.. I live in Nova Scotia where the micro breweries are the best in the world IMO but still cannot compete with the Belgian classics IMO'O (In my OTHER opinion)
@jme1042 жыл бұрын
Leffe is called an "Abbey" beer but it has nothing to do with an monastery, except for the name . Only "trappist" beer is made in a "trappist" monastery.
@rolandxor179 Жыл бұрын
Yes and Leffe is owned by AB Inbev the same one that promotes transgenders through it's Bud Light brand. I love that they can never use the Trappist beers to push degeneracy.

Well, that killed the magic for me. I always imagined that this was brewed by devout followers of Christ using traditional methods. Not by employees using modernized equipment. At least the money is still going to good causes, though.
