Love it how everyone has the best trails in their area. Glad everyone is so happy and have a great place to ride. Can everyone be right? Yes. The best trail is the one you actually have access to as you continue to live your life.

I live in Bella Vista, just north of Bentonville. The trails are so extensive that if you are coming here you need to review maps first to plan your trip. There are 550 miles of trails to explore in Norwest Arkansas. It’s been very well planned out.

There are lots of places around the USA and Canada that have amazing trail systems. I think one thing that does make Bentonville stand out, is that the city has embraced mountain biking and businesses have tailored to mtb community. I was lucky enough to go out to Bentonville in May of this year with a group of friends. We were mixed with ebike and analog. We rode for 6 days and didn't even begin to touch the trails available. Being from the west coast and all the options we have here, we all enjoyed the trails and options Bentonville had to offer. Being a older retired group, we just enjoy riding in general, and having the chance to visit Bentonville was great, and we were able to check off, been there rode that! For me, i guess it's all about what the rider experience is for each of us. Some want Double Black Diamond all day, while others want flow trails Blues. I would love to see more cities embracing our community of mountain biking like Bentonville has. Now for the ebike vs. analog --- so many have opinions on this. For some they are monsters and love to climb and i say go get it! While others love what an ebike can do to extend your play time. I ride XC/HeavyTrails and Ebike, and each brings a different smile. It's all about respecting each other and embracing we all love the same hobby in different ways!

I would never call ebike riders or folks taking a lift up, any less of a rider, but for me I like to ride up and down. So I don't think of it as I have to ride back up, I think of it as I get to ride up again.

Yea maybe I am a purist and some will call me a boomer for it, but…. The climb that “pisses you off” is part of what “mountain biking” is, or rather was. It is the price you pay for the down hills. E-bikes are kind of a result of the “want it now” society we have coupled with the industry need to constantly push new tech at us. Bentonville the MTB capital? Nah, highly built up and commercialized, the MTB capital? It is a bold statement really. But it is more like Disney really, though still a great place to ride.

@@digitalperson108 E-MTB is the future, for better or worse. I think Bentonville's trails are a reflection of that. Those of us who want to do "real" mountain biking will have to stick with familiar trails, I guess. I do agree that climbing is rewarding and even fun... but the reality is that it's draining and can even be impossible for certain riders.

Rocky Mountians out East..... Plus every little town/village. And the thousands and thousands of kilometers of "unsanctioned trails". There is only one MTB mecca.... It's British Columbia, Canada.

I would generally agree with you. I visited Bentonville last year and only had one day to ride. I stayed a Comfort Inn on the edge of town and found a pretty good loop to ride (over 20 miles, IIRC) that hit a lot of the big spots, but I didn't really have the time or legs to hit as much as I would have liked to. I definitely look forward to riding there again with my ebike in the not-too-distant future. Most trail systems are more fun on an ebike. I just rode mine today with two friends and even at a somewhat sedate pace, we rode over 17 miles in under 2 hours. The system we rode has a lot of short, steep and somewhat technical climbs. While I've done these on my regular bike, they are a lot more fun on the ebike. We could have done the loop faster, but one of our friends has completely shot knees and actually needs the ebike if she wants to ride at all, so I lower the assist level of my bike to closer match how she can ride. The plus side of this is I still feel like I got a good ride in.

Coming from a state that made it plainly obvious that e-mountain bike riders were not welcome, as evidenced by the numerous signs at the head of every forest service trail, it is fantastic to be able to ride an E bike in Bentonville and BV, and they are so necessary in many instances. I was on the Wonderland trails a few days ago and made three laps while a group of people waited at the top by the RV to catch their breath. I passed people heading up to Oz Castle without even breaking a sweat. By the time they got to the castle they were drenched in sweat and doubled over their bars gasping for air. If someone wants to put themselves on a pedestal and say they are a "pure" mountain bike rider. I'm cool with it. Call yourself what you want. I just know that riding is much more fun when you're not on the struggle bus 24/7.

First visit to bentonville, rode for the first two days on my meat-bike. There's a lot of climbing! Day 3 decided to rent an Orbea Rise to give my self a break and it was truly an eye opener, so much so that I kept the emtb for an extra day - and on that last day I'd convinced everyone (except one die-hard) to rent ebikes for our last day there, and they're fans too now. It completely changes how you can access and enjoy the near infinity of trails in the area. Best part is you can ride your arse off all day, and not be too tired out later in the evening - a bit like DIY lift access all day. This October we return, and we're not even bringing our meat-powered bikes - we're all renting e-mtb's (and the die-hard guy is still holding fast and not going ebike!). Glad they repaired the place after the tornadoes. And that RATTLE? Most ebikes rattle when you're coasting over rough terrain, as all the gears are not under a load and they clank into each other. Completely normal, even if it can be annoying.

That area is somewhat unique, I can't think of another place that is so completely dedicated to the MTB activity. Lots of places have trails and some of them are great trails, but that place has TONS of trails and it's just not possible to get to all of it, and from what I can tell it has a very bike-park feel to it, so the trails seem short so there's lots of climb and then run, over and over again. Reminds me of sledding when I was a kid, the ride down was great, but the walk back up kind of sucks. I'd like to visit sometime I think.

I ride Galbraith by Bellingham WA regularly. Ebike and acoustic. Two different experiences. The mtb is light and I can flick it around but am only good for one serious climb. On the ebike I can do laps. I can do Blue Ribbon 3 or 4 times in an afternoon. On the ebike Cougar Ridge is not a leg and lung killer. I ride above Butte MT regularly. There is a trail named "the 8 miles of hell" on the CDT. I have ridden it on both bikes. On the acoustic it is 8 miles of hell. Technical, nasty ups, lots of rocks and some serious long grinding climbs. Ugly. On an ebike this trail is a hoot. Still the same technical and rocks but now those are just fun and not totally exhausting. Those that dis on ebikes usually have not tried one on a trail that deserves an ebike. They have not tried 30 miles of single track in an afternoon. Both types of bikes are fun and have a place. I have gone almost exclusively to ebiking because I am 71 and no longer have the metabolism to maintain the conditioning required to do what I want on an acoustic. I figure the ebike will allow me to still be riding serious stuff into my 80s. I would like to try Bentonville but there is just too much good stuff in the northwest to justify the drive. And there are no crowds.

@@chrisclifford4109 at 71 the getting in shape is a bit more difficult. I am finding as time passes that what used to be fairly refreshing as rides go is now a leg and lung killer. @@chrisclifford4109 Good point. Depends on duration, grade, technicality and how someone is feeling that day. I typically ride with people a lot younger than I am. My "serious climb" is definitely not theirs. Courteous riders understand this. We still have a lot of fun. 10 years ago I would lead on group mtb rides and schooled the NICA kids I coached. Now I am sweep and I bailed on coaching NICA. The difference between 61 and 71 is amazing. Nuts. As age increases you learn to adjust. "Easy" climbs change. Downhills become more cautious not because you are slower but because a simple crash is now much more serious. A simple trip over the bars means several weeks of healing when it used to mean a day and any joint injuries means a possible increase in arthritis. We can still have a blast and I can still leave many I ride with on the downs but I now keep the tires mostly on the ground. The ebike allows me to have fun all day as opposed to a couple of hours.

Those values with a rough estimate of feet-per-mile should give people a better idea of what to expect & what kind of technology they might choose. I personally love the reduced mechanical failure points & efficiency of an 18 lbs. single speed. You might not launch off big drops, but it really shines when it comes to distance covered over time. It also can cover a couple hundred miles a day without becoming a lead-sled when the battery dies ;)

The razorback trail is a good example, you've got the hill to the north near crystal bridges, and that hill to the south before you get to the brewery area there, south of the soccer fields. Same to the east and west.

Bro, I could've told you that. Out of nowhere, all of a sudden, B-ville is a mecca. It was just a few yrs ago that they were just laying down trails as Skills with Phil noted.. Green trails at that. Looking for mecca riding come west. CA, OR, and WA each offers its own terrain. As noted, leave the ebike, gravel bike, and bring the hardtail and a FS bike and enjoy the time of your life.

nice commentary man. As much as I love my trad enduro. I just find myself on my ebike more and more. I like how they can breathe life into otherwise mediocre trails that have intermittent flow or super punchy sections that chop up the flow. They can help to fill in the gaps... it's not about being lazy or less of a rider at all.. *to bad about the flat :(

If the bike has a shimano or Bosch motor, they really rattle on the bumps. It’s the internal gear setup

I think those who don’t think Bentonville isn’t the MTB capital of the world, that’s fine. Just remember aside from its recent storm damage, these trails never close except for maintenance. Everything up north closes in the winter. Same with most mountain regions. I think it’s the most open and receptive area, that’s MTB positive. To me it’s a MTB trail network with a town around it

I don’t know I just rode everywhere on normal bike. It was awesome parked your car at the air bnb and didn’t need it for the rest of the trip… other than checking out Hobbs

Did you buy yourself a Ramblas? I have one. Those OEM Maxxis tires are crap from the factory with no sidewall protection....the first thing you have to do on that bike is switch out to tubeless tires which usually means a new set of rims because those rims aren't set up for tubeless. The rattling sounds are the plastic gears they will not affect anything motor wise.

Having an e-bike allows you to cover more ground no matter where you are. E-bikes are not just pervasive in NWA, but every mountain biking destination in North American. People are just lazier and want to see more without doing the work.

Just got back and an Ebike makes a world of difference. Also I rode mostly in Bella Vista, some great trails over there. The thing about Bentonville, there are a lot of loose gravely trails which combined with the dry dusty conditions and it can get pretty sketchy.

How could a place be the MTB mecca when it only has 400' of vertical? Anyone saying this hasn't been to Bellingham/Squamish/North Van/Whistler.

It might be a pessimistic thing to say, but I think eMTBs will become more popular as only ones who can afford this hobby will be older gens and retirees. Not to diss on eBikes, but the addition of motor system adds to hefty costs to already expensive MTBs. It feels like younger gen in the US are less likely to have cycling as hobby except in few cycling friendly areas. Insurances are getting unaffordable as well, hence people of working age will avoid risky activities. The same goes for pure road cycling as well. But maybe gravel cycling can expand, as the riders are not taking technical trails and also separated from car traffic compared to road cycling. But not by a lot I think.

pretty much any decent mountain bike destination on the west coast > anywhere east of the Rockies. I'll take a multi-mile fire road climb with jedi level single track for days over rolling man-made stuff all day.

The county of Los Angeles has thousands of miles of mtn bike trails, single track, fire road, gravel. Some are located minutes from the city, or the valleys, canyons, etc. The there are 10s of thousands of road bike roads in the mountains, canyons and cities. Its cycling bliss.
