In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at why billionaires won't save us from climate change. Specifically, I look at how the elite philanthropy of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk function as more of a billionaire preservation of wealth and self than as an act of altruism. Elite philanthropy from Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos in particular seem to solidify their political and social power even more. Bill Gates and his foundation have steered the realm of global health for quite some time (especially during the pandemic) and it seems as if he is using his billionaire wealth to do the same for climate action. Jeff Bezos' $10 billion Earth Fund seems to be functioning in a similar way while also whitewashing the destructive nature of Amazon, aka how Jeff Bezos made his money. Elon Musk is also jumping on the billionaire philanthropy train with a carbon capture prize that is measly compared to his massive wealth. At the end of the day billionaires and billionaire money are not solutions to climate change and the climate crisis, we are.

It's the ignorance they teach about economics that causes our problems. The notion that building "wealth" is a positive thing. When it's a dog whistle for socialism. Like wealth gives you a right to socialism mailbox money. To take out loans to buy real estate to rent back to us. In the name of "building wealth", and that causes real estate shortages. It's economic ignorance. Very poor math. Houses are outpriced for the working-class to afford and no policing to help us to stop socialism. And we need policing by a Democratic nation. Not "wealth". Get rid of Citizens United. Let us choose who we associate with. Citizens United takes our choice away. Citizen United makes us slaves.

It would not change anything. Take the money away from the rich and give it to the rest, some years later it will be back in the billionaires bags. An example of the hypocritical world we live in is on this channel. "I love your videos so much" "Never stop" "You're so great" but still this man can't earn enough money from 280k people. People talk to much and do to little. This is why people who DO (the evil billionaires and others) will become wealthy because they invent good tools, helping people. Otherwise they would not be rich.
@PhilfreezeCH
@PhilfreezeCH 3 жыл бұрын
@@leonard0104 do you really believe billionaires are that rich because they work harder than people who work two or three jobs and are smarter than the most renown scientists and engineers on the planet? Or is it maybe a lot of initial luck, combined with having no moral qualms about exploiting everyone around you and the ability of money to acquire more money without you having to do anything? Is Bill Gates somehow a better programmer than Linus Torvalds? Not just better but billions of times better? Or did Gates just do the immoral thing and try to monopolize the market and exploit workers while Torvalds did the moral thing and made it free for everyone to use?
@davidpeppers551

@@leonard0104 You know he won't earn enough? Not all can really aford regular monetary support. Adding comments is supposed to help. Reducing inrqualiru would help by reducing the imbalance in political control. We may need to see some realities and change our thinking along with it. A maximum wage or income could help. The idea that converting everything that possibly can be into a concentrated personal wealth for a few people is a good thing is a big problem. It as seen as the way things should be and needs to be. Money means merit and merit means money. A dangerous blindness comes with this. People come to think or act as if those with the most money are simply better people when it comes to just about anything: smarter, more thoughtful, have the best things in mind, most helpful, generous......... They have polls to show much of this. In short, people assume lots of good things about wealthy people without having nor demanding any evidence. The wealth is the only "evidence" they need.

@@chikitronrx0 Yeah, Like how subsidies increase prices. Think college is expensive now? See how it expensive it is after it's free. (Jake Tran's video on universities) Ever heard of velocity of money+inflation? There's a way to reward efficiency, it's called capitalism. Did you know, some congressman rejected a scientist's plan to create reusable rockets cuz "how about my voters/contractors that rely on billions worth of jobs contracts per launch?" (80s era, report by john stossel, NASA v SpaceX) Hmmmm, I wonder why government funded projects (with near infinite money) is inefficient. Why some guy who almost went broke (and still unprofitable to this day) have much more efficient (and greener) products Hmmmmmmm. It's as if projects with near infinite money (all you need is to stir outrage/necessity) can hike up prices without care. Just as the healthcare with his largue amounth of problems Debt about college it's almost an exclusive usa problem. An example of products with the need of the market to be better like apple or something. While regulations of other countries as Europe for the right to repair of the costumers, or the exclusive design of light bulbs from phillips for dubai show other view about progress and improvement. it's not greener, it's just profitable, for some amounth of time. Am I the only one who thinks that 'Bill Gates's' book is ghostwritten? I mean sure, he's smart and all, but that is the exact case scenario that ghostwriting is made for- he would pay a team of experts to brainstorm ideas then pay a professional to compile them all into a compelling book, maybe reading through it a couple times to make sure it fits his image. Yeah, but this is a useful opportunity to distinguish between run-of-the-mill millionaires and the billionaire class, especially given that phrases like "demonizing wealth" or, more euphemistically, "demonizing success" are often used as a cudgel any time we dare critique the status quo. Wealth alone isn't the problem, per se. It's the access that wealth buys - to legislators, international organizations, "thought leaders," media, and institutions (like universities) - that is the real problem. John Greene is certainly rich, but with a net worth less than 20 million dollars, his ability to shape laws, regulations, and public discourse through his money is far more modest than the ultra rich.
@dvf1736

there's a difference between rich and wealthy. Rich people get large paychecks, wealthy people write the checks. Rich people have a set number to their money, and no power beyond that. Wealthy people have more money than they could ever hope to spend, and some more. Their power extends far and wide. John Green has a net worth of 17 million, a pitiful sum of money compared to the wealthy elites. His entire net worth would not be able to pay for a single one of their mansions, and definitely can't be used for any political power

You are right about the billionaires being able to use their donations as tax write-offs but what a bunch of people don't get is those systems are also whats helping small business owners. There are a multitude of things that can be written off. Anyone that works for Uber knows you write-off your miles and your gas but there is a lot more that you can write-off like food, myself being an entertainer I can write-off apparel, donations, and virtually any other expense like gear or services. The other thing people do not realize is that these systems can help them too. Setting up an LLC is not the most expensive thing in the world and is something to work towards. You can have an LLC setup under your own name just as long as you get an EIN that will work with giving you tax write-offs.

@@letung9267 I dont have a problem with rich people. So that is why I am not a hypocrite, at least not in this point. Also I am not criticizing OCC, I am criticizing the viewers who SAY they "love this channel" and "support those views" yet 280.000 people are not generous enough to make ONE dude, who (different from others) actually DOES smth in the world and enlightens and educates people, pay his bills. I just see a lot of hyporitical GOOD people lately and I hate it. If you hate against other people and do not really do something yourself (against those "evil people" or better something good) in my opinion you are just trying to do yourself and your conscience a pleasure by being a hypocrite "good person". everything what "seems good" is being supported. for example socialism. like, do people realize socialism NEVER worked out in the past and rn? look at venezuela, and why dont we have a soviet union and so on. it just does not work. capitalism and even social-capitalism brought so much benefits, progress and wealth to people. or do you want to live in a world like in the middle ages (not that they had socialism there lol idk). I think people are just unhappy but attack the wrong targets. they hate against so many things which are so unnessasary. taking away money from the rich for example wont help. Give it to the rest, the "poor people" and in a view years the money will be back with the rich. That is how I think it works. People innovating and bringing people good will be benefited with money. if you dont want them to get rewarded they would not do such things or there would not even be a drive to make the earth a greater place or push humanity.
