Why Elon Musk won't save us, explained. Support OCC and get 20+ bonus, ad-free videos by signing up for Nebula: go.nebula.tv/occ/
In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at why Elon Musk won't save us from climate change. Specifically, I look at how Elon Musk's companies like Tesla and SpaceX adhere to a. philosophy of ecomodernism that employs ideologies of techno-optimism and decoupling to tackling the problems of the climate crisis. Elon Musk won't save us because companies like Tesla are exploiting workers in Tesla factories, as well as utilizing capitalist, colonialist methods of extraction that rely on child labor in cobalt and lithium mines. Elon Musk's future is one where the ruling class enjoys the luxuries of his companies like the Tesla Cybertruck or the Las Vegas Loop System, or even a martian space colony, all at the expense of laborers and the working class. Elon Musk shows that ecomodernism is an untenable solution to the climate crisis and climate change. Not only does decoupling not work, but futuristic technologies have very tangible consequences for people and for the planet.

Stop idolising anyone, just take the good parts and make yourself a better one you wish to have. It is not easy as it sounds, and also not as dangerous as depicted here in this video. There's a cost for everything, early bird catches the best catch but has to endure the harshness of the uneasy weather. Nothing comes in easy and cheap. Be the best and so the best. I've noticed some people vilify celebs but then just go idolize yt-rs too much and think that's safe or different. @@MIKOOL13 In the us market you dunce. The battery of a tesla alone weighs more than many european cars in total. Teslas are not anywhere close to efficient at their size and weight, and even if they are more efficient than other EV's, the solution is not to supersize them; you are then offsetting the increased efficiency. More weight= more force required to move that weight, meaning less efficient.

It's just a matter of perspective, many so-called "self-made billionaires" came from affluent families. The wealth disparity in the US is so high that a billionaire that came from a single-digit millionaire family can be considered "self-made." For example, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg might not come from a super rich family, but Gates' father was a lawyer and his mother served as a board of directors (his maternal grandparents were top bankers); Mark Zuckerberg's father was a dentist and his mother was a psychiatrist (which is a doctor). These jobs are not something an average parent holds. Not to mention that it's actually more expensive to get the same thing if you're poor than if you're rich.

So a vehicle in your opinion is an unnecessary luxury good ? So how would you propose in your Utopia to move goods around or move People like me that live in rural areas to and from grocery shopping and trips to the Doctor and Home Depot and the Feed Store ? Are you under the impression that it would be sustainable or financially viable to run a Public Transit Line out to each and every Home out in the County? I have NO interest whatsoever to live in a tall building in the city with no trees and grass. All you kids are welcome to it. But I am not living in a hive for your Utopia and someone has to raise the food you consume. There is a very good reason that there is no Public Bus service out here and you are lucky if Uber will make the trip. So I will be keeping my vehicle that incidentally gets 38 mpg and well maintained until I am too old to do so. I will be growing as much of my own food as possible though aquaponics and organic farming practices so please do not lecture me on not participating in trying to lessen my impact on Mother Earth. As you increase your knowledge by living upon this Earth you will learn that not everyone is just like you, nor should they be. For that is the road to madness.

It's hypocritical because it focuses on the negative sides of musk and his companies while failing to look reality in the face. Sure, tesla workers should definitely be allowed to unionize, and we do need to find better sources of cobalt and lithium, but pinning 100% of the blame on musk is pure clickbait and ignores the fact that this is a societal problem. Where else would you mine them? Why do you ignore the fact that it's those poor countries themselves cooperating in enslaving their own kids for profit, and why not mention that tesla is trying to move away from lithium-cobalt batteries as fast as science allows it? What about other automakers that use those minerals? Musk is far from a saint. But if he wasn't around do you really think somebody else would've pushed so hard for starlink, autopilot and EVs? This is the reality of our world. Somebody needs to put in the work in order for real change to happen, both on the top decision making level (billionaires/politicians) and the worker level. And as a product of that system, some people get rich first. Name me one person who did a 100% pacifist run of real life without making at least some sacrifice, and who achieved real change. What i hate about these so called green youtube channels is that they try to slide right next to their balanced content an unhealthy dose of "rich people bad" "capitalism unfair" and "guilt-driven stagnation yay lets go". I've been following the developments in Tesla. They are developing battery chemistries that are moving away from the use of Cobalt and Nickel. If I recall correctly, the last battery day presentation goes over this. They're attempting to develop silicon based cells in order to replace the Nickel and Cobalt. Tesla is not the only company working on this. By making Cobalt redundant, that removes the demand of the product from the dreaded artisanal mines in the DRC.

There are no developments to follow. Tesla is lying. They create a PowerPoint presentations and maybe sone props for shows and presentations. They're not developing anything. You CAN'T "develop chemistries". You can try to find other chemistries that aren't in use but that's a whole other issue. Besides, Tesla isn't involved in the development of batteries. That's Panasonic. When Panasonic has a project in mind Tesla claims they're developing something new. The probolem IS capitalism, technology of itself is a tool and how it's made and how it's used is up to us. The only viable way to get consistent support for a movement is to not only oppose the bad things the old system creates but to create a vision for a future to strive for. I for one believe th left needs to re-embrace it's techno-optimism, in fact we need to drag it's most pure expression, transhumanism, back into it's roots of the left where it was born instead of keeping the promise of morphological liberation, a cure to all diseases and life extension in the hands of the musk-type charlatans. We need a realistic, logistically and technologically possible, step by step policy proposal that creates a future where the vast majority would want to live in.

Anyway, Elon himself overworks himself up to an unhealthy level to achieve a certain dream, if his employees aren't in it then they don't have to work there. Think of it this way: If you claim to be a force of good and excel at what you do, don't you think your competitors will do something about it? (especially if you can't keep up in a healthy competition) - Tesla mines heavily for cobalt and lithium: Do these video makers want cars made out of sunlight and water?? Or are they saying that the world should ditch electric cars and revert back to gas cars?? It's like a series killer repents and stops killing people, but people complain that he still has anger issues. Or like a good samaritan who works on getting plastic out of the oceans but people complain that his boat isn't even eco-friendly certified and he should've bought the more expensive boat made out of environmentally-friendly materials. It's like wanting to achieve utopia but people complain every step of the way of how un-utopian your ways are.

Haven't watched the video yet, but I have a question about the thumbnail: why are rockets behind Elon - Soyuz designs? SpaceX rockets have a different silhuette. Not the most distinct one, but those were definitely not them. Those triangular-looking site boosters are distinctly part of R7-Voshod-Soyuz Soviet rocket Korolev's design pattern.

Random thing, at 8:52 you said “this begs the question” but you should say “this raises the question”. Begging the question is a logical fallacy in which the conclusion is assumed in the premise, like circular reasoning. E.g “green is the best colour because it is the greenest of all colours.” Anyways awesome video! Thank you for sharing. 🙏

Admittedly, I can't disagree with anything revealed here, but what better choice do we have? Besides reducing overall personal footprint by driving less, eating more sustainably, and pushing for systemic change, what can we do? Divest from the largest company accelerating sustainable energy? I'm all for pointing out flaws, but at a certain point, we need progress.

Why can't we use cycles simply or a public transport, why can't we practice sustainable development measures like the people in developing nations do. I always wondered that why always poor people have to pay the cost so that rich can live lavishly. I think he's doing great and he's definitely a motivation for the hardwork he does but he's definitely not the iron man that he paints himself to be.

@@JyotiPandey-mi7xx So take public transport as an example, Tesla is surely a good influence for developing tech to increase the pace of transition to EV public transport? I agree with Stephen. I don't feel like this video actually helps. I agree that a huge system change away from capitalism would be great, but for the realistic situation we see ourselves in I don't see how it is possible to paint the transition to electrifiction so poorly. We've seen previous OCC videos showing how strong these fossil fuel and automotive industries are, it is pretty astonishing that Tesla has managed to do what they have been able to. We know places like the US are overusing power the most so to me it seems useful if EV can help reduce this footprint. This comment is becoming too long, happy to discuss further though!

despite being @ourchangingclimate the video It avoids the obvious need to transition to sustainable energy. the video isn't about sustainable energy technology. it's advocating socialism as a solution to our environmental issues without mentioning socialism.

@@jeffnc the solution isn't to reject capitlism, its having a capitlism that's works. Oil and coal companies getting billions in subsidies from the US gov show that capitlism is 'rigged', because the market isn't fair, instead one side has an advantage. This makes it more difficult for clean energy tech to gain dominance over coal + oil. The U.S gov is not a fair referee of the game of capitlism.

1000% agree. Please OCC. Otherwise with vidoes like this it seems completely unsurmountable and more likely that it'll switch off laypeople who have a passing interesting in trying to get behind the much needed green revolution.

There's only one way out. Stop growth (resource depletion and pollution) and live simply and sustainably and in a regional, decentralized way. The problem is almost no one, among those with power and influence, is thinking in those terms. Since the 1970's there have been a few with that vision, but they were ignored and drowned out by a consumer culture.
@lo-ky2079
@lo-ky2079 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbanach3875 I think that's backward thinking and I always thought of the low-class people who work in the coal industry/companies that did the pollution. As a South East Asian I'm exposed to the reality that some people depend on their and their family life with that kind of job, making it disappear won't solve anything. It's really controversial but my opinion is to rapidly push the innovation of clean energy, the twist is there's always something that we need to sacrifice. But again I might be wrong. I'm here simply to have an open-minded debate

@@lo-ky2079 I don't get what is backward about recognizing and respecting the resource and biological limits of the planet. Even "clean energy" requires vast resources (again subject to depletion) to build the infrastructure, which will be good for how many years? And then will need to be discarded and replaced. But I'm not here to change your mind. Keep exploring these issues and, yes, have an open mind.
