Focused, informative, and positive. A perfect summary of why everyone should practice a martial art. Superb.

i almost died doing bjj. was training for 2 years as a white belt. one day i got caught in a nasty guillotine and didnt tap, since i wasnt being choked or even cranked, and i didnt knew the dangers of just being held by the neck. Long story short, i had a minor brain stroke. Severed the cervic artery and it almost killed me. i was extremely lucky since there where no noticeable long term effects. Just to say, its not all cute "bjj saved my life". its also a brutal martial art designed to kill or seriously injure people (we call it submit, but its acually a "kill you or kill me" game). So when you step on the mats, be extremely mindful about you AND your partners. Dont go too hard on peoples necks, we are not designed to be blood choked on the regular. Tap early, even before the submission comes. Learn to recognize the "chess board". If its game over, its game over. Dont try to fight your way out of compromised positions. It can badly injure, disable or even kill you. Tap and reset. Learn to avoid those positions altogether. I wish my teachers were more focused on the safety of their students. They were great, but they never mentioned anything about this. They encouraged resilience to tapping, which is a very, very dangerous game.

Hey, just saw this comment, and I'm sorry to hear it. I definitely think people should be aware that they're participating in a violent sport, and that it's better to tap early. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Joel love your videos, I watched a clip where you had a great looking excel sheet with tabs including concepts such as entry, attack, technique etc... would you have a copy or example for me please? Thanks Warren

Hey Warren, I'll see if there's a good place to share it - TBH it would only work as an example though, you really need your own sheet with your own game and the techniques you're trying to master/use on it. LMK if that makes sense?

Excellent content! Do you feel that bjj has any negative impact on piano playing? My understanding is that it is quite tough on the fingers.

This is a great question actually: my fingers definitely felt more regularly frazzled when I was doing gi more regularly (alongside some bouldering and judo, so). No gi 3X a week doesn't seem to bother me, though I live in fear of an injury that stops me practising for a couple of weeks

Ok, so just moved to London from Cornwall. Have always been an extreme sports person, and looking for something to fill the void of surfing. I've been getting a little into parkour so far, which I love for its re-interpretation of urban space and joyful expression. But I have to say, I am interested in the grittiness and struggle of martial arts, precisely because that stuff is quite a turn off for me. I do still have a slightly tough time telling myself to go along to something I don't feel completely drawn to though.

Hey man! I definitely think jits is worth a try: a lot of BJJ guys do it and I think they're very complementary: one is an activity you can do solo, outdoors, with no real winning and losing, and the other is...the opposite of that. There are a lot of surf spots where you could also drop in at a BJJ academy, which is pretty cool. But if you're looking for a surfing style sport to do in London, have you thought about bouldering? There are a tonne of walls, but also some lovely outdoor spots, like Fairlop Waters on the central line. Let me know how it goes!

@@JoelSnape1 Cheers, always good with the replies, and great to see you putting out such good stuff. :) Yeah, may end up moving towards the bouldering in winter when the parkour gets too miserable. For the moment gonna be sticking to exploring and finding groups for that as its all a bit mysterious, but have BJJ at the top of my list of next things for when I'm a bit more sorted in a year or so. Not the right time at the moment, but a few people from various spheres (including youtube obvs) have all made interesting cases for it.

There are also a lot of risks of neck injury and even being paralysed. Since it is a contact sport and involves a lot of takedowns and work on your back + a lot of sweeps. I found those "accidents" on the internet happen in casual rollings :( Is it worth it, considering all the risks for the hobbyist?
