Of all the unmade movies over the years, this one is hands down the most heartbreaking to me. The concept arts are amazing visuals and they had so many original and new ideas never explored in any of the prior movies. And it would've ignored the shittier Alien movies as noncanon. It would've been a resurrection than Resurrection was. You can tell Neil Blompkamp was really passionate about the project and is a talented filmmaker. His story was so good, it made Sigourney Weaver want to return (after years of her saying she didn't wanna return since Resurrection left a bad taste in her mouth) which would seem impossible to pull off. He even wanted to make a Robocop sequel and it too sounded awesome. Why is Hollywood f*cking over this guy's talent by not producing his ideas!?! F*cking assholes. F*cking idiots!

I know I may get some hate for this.... But in a lot of ways... I blame the Marvel Movies. They changed everything. Studios just aren't willing to take any risks at all. They want to see bigger and bigger profit margins and will stick to exclusively what's safe.. and unfortunately the only thing anyone wanted to see for the longest time... Were super hero films.

My issue with Blomkamp's movies is that their themes are really on the nose and not subtle. Always painfully obvious but tries to come off complex. District 9, Elysium, Chappie felt like they had some of the same messaging.

@@agfagaevart arguably it’s a vicious circle. Im not saying audiences are to blame, I think you’re correct in that it’s the fault of the studios in what they mandate - but that what is mandated is being driven by what audiences now expect from (big franchise) films. Yes, studios can/do mandate what’s in the script and what beats a movie must hit - doesn’t necessarily mean the writers are inexperienced, moreover studios could pick writers which they know are “safe” and would implement studio demands. This then leads to by the numbers films which are like carnival rides, with set pieces coming in at very fixed points of the film...these films are then watched by mass audiences, which in turn changes audience expectations of films.

For sure, I was really excited for Blomkamp's _Alien 5,_ I had even called it out by a year before it was ever announced, it was like a film dream come true. I wish that Fox had chosen to make *_both_* Ridley Scott's _Alien_ prequels and Neill Blomkamp's _Aliens 2_ film. But I'll bet Scott and Fox were pissing themselves in fear believing that Blomkamp's film probably would've done better than whatever their prequel plans were.

@@georgeeskiadis5637 I liked them watching them the first time. Maybe it's just me liking to see the protagonists overcome the antagonists and that's good. I never judged the films for being different than the original. It didn't even occur to me in the beginning. I mean: Seeing alien for the first time and there is suspense as you the viewer also have never seen the monster. And there are a lot of them in the second. It's hard to get spooked the same way afterwards. And that there was such a difference in terms of action between 1 and 2 also kind of opened the door for what was to come. I really REALLY want this film to get made, but the Director's cut of Alien 3 is quite good. Covenant is a great looking film, but the characters do stupid things (like Prometheus) so they are hard to invest in or root for, there is very little of the actual Alien stuff and there is no tension whatsoever. Ridley Scott needs to go bye bye from this franchise and Neill is the guy to get things back on track.

Kren Wregget The original alien characters had dumb moments to, like Kane putting his face next to the egg, or them yelling to be let back into the ship, character going off on his own to chase a cat, dumb female who won't move so the guy can blast the alien and gets them both killed. You see, I can go over the dumb shit that happens in the original, but those imperfections are considered perfection in the eyes of fans. People in general are blind by their own way of thinking.

ok, fair points, except that the people in Prometheus and A:Covenant are supposed to be experts in their field; scientists and such. The Nostromo crew are just regular folks so it makes sense for them to freak out or do stuff that might not make much sense.

Kren Wregget If you actually paid attention to Prometheus, they all weren't the generic scientist that knew everything. Example: Fifield was a geologist and loved rocks. Millburn was a biologist and loved animals and other living organisms. Case in point, not everyone was an all knowing scientist. Same thing can be said for covenant, sure they have professions but they aren't the all knowing scientist.

I actually like the prequels so far but I completely agree. Blomkamp's concepts seem extremely creative and interesting and can easily be rearranged to coexist with Ridley's direction, and there's no reason why they can't pump out two movie series at the same time. Look at Star Wars, one year they pump out a spinoff and the next they pump out a trilogy film. Why can't Fox let that happen with Blomkamp? They are the people in control and, his ideas seem very very well. All in all, I hope for the best, and maybe one day we will get to see something similar come to light.

I still can't hate on Alien 3. It is depressing, and it is sad to see two beloved characters, and then later Ripley herself, tossed into an inferno, but I still feel that, as nihilistic as this film is...IT. WRAPS. THINGS. UP. It is not a happy conclusion by any stretch, however, Ripley does protect humanity from the threat of the xenomorph. And it reflects life. Reality is not something pretty and wrapped up in a beautiful little bow. It's messy, and shit happens. Just like this film. I feel like Alien 3 might be the best interpretation of what life is like. Fairy tale endings are few and far between in real life, and Alien 3 reflects that. Acting as if this film does not exist, is not cannon, is, in my opinion, a terrible assessment. Just because it didn't do or go in the direction you wanted, don't be so quick to dismiss it. I will stand by this film as cannon until the day I die.

Unfortunately after Terminator Dark Fate has bombed Alien 5 is more terminated than ever.. as it would be almost the exact same scenario ( i.e. the 'real' 3rd movie ignoring the lame sequels, bringing back previously deceased characters, older badass iconic female lead returns, maybe even Cameron returning to exec produce ) which would now seem like box office suicide (esp as the Alien and Terminator franchises are so heavily connected)

Fundamentally disagree with the premise. We only have to look at another once great franchise that died because of sequel confusion. Terminator. Each modern movie in the franchise tries to overwrite what we already know and erase the sequels until it became an unintelligible mess. If alien 5 removed 3 and 4 then alien would suffer the same fate. Always respect what came before no matter if you like it or not.

Scott should have done two things after the release of Prometheus (2012): 1. He should have stuck to his original idea for the follow-up to Prometheus instead of Alien Covenant. 2. He should have encouraged the production of Alien 5. Alien Covenant was an absolute stinker on so many levels. Scott and the scriptwriters couldn't figure out what they wanted the film to be. So it is a jumbled mess. A poor rehash of Prometheus and the original Alien (1979) with generic and extremely dumb characters and scenes that telegraph everything and provide no genuine sense of suspense or terror. In fact, some scenes were unintentionally funny. The film features the worst CGI for a xenomorph ever seen in the franchise. Part of why Alien and Aliens (1986) were so successful was because the practical effects gave the creatures a tangible three-dimensional form and they were all the more terrifying. The cinematography was good, but that was the only good thing about this film apart from Michael Fassbender. Ridley Scott needs to be relieved of directing any more films in the Alien franchise. If there another prequel it either needs to ignore the mess that was Alien Covenant or, at the very least, address it in a way at the start of the picture by doing a "Bobby Ewing" and say it was a Shaw's dream after she wakes up from hibernation. Anyone that remembers the television series Dallas from the 1970s and 1980s will know what I mean by doing a "Bobby Ewing". Better still, we need to see Alien 5 fast-tracked into production with James Cameron directing before another prequel. Honestly, Hollywood beginning to suffer from prequelitis.

Why this could not have been great is down to one single reason: Lack of respect. Blomkamp talks about respecting the lineage and giving fans what they deserve. So aparently fans of the first 2 movies deserve a followup movie, fans of 3 and 4 deserve a kick in the dick. "I want my kickass movie to have Hicks and Ripley and stuff! What do you mean they are dead? Well let's just ignore that!" You mentioned how movies set directly after the last one in the timeline don't seem to remember anything about their predecessors. Well i highly doubt Ripley would have talked about her traumatic experience of sacrificing herself in a firy pit while an Alienqueen bursts out of her. Ripleys death if anything freed the franchise that was bound to a character who whose arc was not only over, she made the plot borderline ridiculous. The company is trying everything to get it's hands on a single Alien. These things are so rare and so hard to find that it takes decades for another opportunity to ship one to earth. Yet having e close encounter with them is like every fortnight for this woman. He could have explored inj any direction he pleased, but nope. Blomkamp wanted his awesome OCs (please don't steal) to meetup with Ripley and Hicks. Everything about this has the attitude of an arrogant fanfic writer. I am awesome, my opinion is awesome, i'll retcon whatever the fuck i want to have my fanfic happen the way i want to. I hate Alien 4 with a passion. But that movie has it's fans. Quite a few of them. Where's the respect towards them? Nowhere. A good author does what he can with what he is given. And even rancid shit can be turned into something great. Tkae Ouja 2 for example. First one is one of the worst most cliche ridden horror movies in existence.Second one takes the first movie into account and yet is still an amazing movie. Bad authors just take something and bend and break it however they need to make it work for them. Bye bye Blomkamps Alien, good riddance.

Huge mistakes we made after the first two movies. The intergrity of characters has sort of been lost. I would love a x-rated TV series or something well written. It surprises me no one has thought about doing a film dedicated to LV426! The film studio wouldn't have to use Ripley or Hicks. It could be truly terrifying standalone movie. I think at its heart the films are horror action movies and that doesn't require a reinvention of the wheel. Let the old characters go and concentrate on a well written story..

David met white jesus, stole his black jizm, murdered a peaceful populace, murdered his waifu, experimented on her ovaries, then hijacked a shuttle and regurgitated him and his waifus babies. Sound's like a great movie! Ridley! Make it happen in two... wait... no six movies! People are so hungry for shit they will pay out the nose for this nose gold. Alien 3 could only end one way, high action. And that high action ends in either the colonial marines on two fronts destroying the engineer home world and destroying WY for good... or some weird shitty cult spreading the eggs across the universe because they think they are gods creatures. Maybe a hybrid of both, it'd make a good trilogy, but that's the only place the franchise literally has to go in a legit fashion, horror, to horror/action, to pure action ending in either evil winning or good winning and I for one would find it shitty and cliche to go the alien breeds across the cosmos cult wins. Alien was done... it was done. I'll watch Alien... same way I'll watch Aliens or Godfather 1/2. It was done. Like Scarface or Ghostbusters. It was done, it was amazing, I had fun. I was there opening day and the popcorn was delicious! DELICIOUS!

I'm sure people would have loved it and people would have hated it. Covenant wasn't bad but really fell victim to the fans and internet trying to dictate it. Everyone wanted the Xenomorph and it was a massive disappointment. I felt Billy Cruddups character Oram should have been the main protagonist instead of Daniels. Having all these female hero characters in Alien prequels kind of takes away what was so special about Ripley.

International Art Projects: It may look like it if you focus on that part. You yourself, reviews and others have mentioned other things. Like "why should we care about these characters" have been mentioned by some reviews and how the last supper clip that wasn't in the movie would at least have told us more about them. Some wished that the characters had explored and reacted more to the Engineer city. I watched the movie thinking how unhappy Prometheus fans were going to be with the engineers part. The clip of David and Elisabeth Shaw released on KZbin gave the impression that a movie was missing between Prometheus and Covenant. Covenant had a shorter version as a flashback. Those that don't care as much about Prometheus and Alien will likely have a higher opinion about Covenant.

As someone cursed with an awful attention span, even before the internet rotted my brain, alien absolutely holds up. There was not a single point through the whole thing where i just wanted them to skip something and get to the point (maybe the cat scene but that's just because the guy was being dumb XD). I can not say the same thing about Prometheus. The intro section before the horror was boring as hell because i didn't feel like i got any exposition, i didn't get to know any characters and it was just asking questions that do not resonate with me. Then when the horror started, it was all just a bunch of nonsense. Why did the mealworms become vagina snakes? Why did the black cum make octopus baby? Why did octopus baby become a face hugger? Why did a wierd alien come out of the elden ring character's chest? This was meant to be a prequel to answer questions you may have had from the original but it only made more questions that i honestly didn't care to get an answer for because i didn't care about any of the characters. I forgot where i was going with this but i hope i made a point

The problem with all 3 those movies is they all have the same elements - some type of injustice, and a main character who becomes a "convert" to the cause of good after being a "bad person". Yes, there are some flipped elements and genders, but they are pretty much the same story over and over.

I just don't get the hate people give Resurrection. Cheesy band of outlaws doing shady deals for scientist doing genetic experiments on a military ship in uncharted space. Throw in a bit of bad acting with cheesy lines. Aliens. A mutant Alien. Some guns. A bit of horror. The odd punchline. Like, what's wrong with it? I think it's pretty good. They even brought Weaver back in a somewhat tasteful way. Shit, you could make Alien 5 after it. They land on earth and guess what!? Juggernaught ship! People should let "Aliens" go. James Cameron decided he'd rather direct "Titanic" than "Aliens 2", because boats are way better than aliens. According to James Cameron. If you care that much about the first 2 films, don't ever watch "Alien 3: Fincher Got Himself a Jobby-Job" all the way through to "Alien: Covenant with Danny McBride's Stupid Fucking Hat" ever, ever, EVER AGAIN. If you feel that strongly about it, live it. From what I could tell, "Aliens" was supposed to the REAL end of the series any-damn-way. But Fincher was working his way towards "Edward Norton's Character is Homicidal So He Needed An Imaginary Friend". Everybody's gotta start somewhere, right?

Sorry, Looks like Neil Blomkamp's "Alien 5" would've been "Jurassic Park", only, with aliens. Let "Aliens" go! "Terminator 2" made more money than all the "Alien" movies combined. Arnold Schwarzeneggar got paid with a JET. Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn got paid with money. You know you've hit the big time in Hollywood when you're a director and you start paying people with aircraft!

district9 is cool, but I don't think blomfeld can read ridley scotts mind. the "juggernaut" has always been THE thing in alien. the horror-creature-plot was just a distraction and I think it was always conceived like that. the REAL story always was the JUGGERNAUT. I'm happy blomfeld didn't do any "alien5". the original "alien" is NOT about the xenomorphs and has never been. the sequels were just stupid money making. admittedly the first sequel was cool. but the rest is plain derailed crap.blomfeld is the type of guy who ruined the vision by focusing on stupid effects and primitive horror. at best a collage of "unexpected plot twists" like star wars 8 totally ignoring the original vision and "addressing a younger audience". nope. stay where you are, blomfeld, and don't do damage to any more visions of other people. do a sequel of distriuct9 and get lost in insignificance.

I can't say I cared for either District 9 or Chappie. Elysium was okay though. I like the idea of an Alien film that takes place where Covenant left off, or some time after. But no, I don't need one squished in-between Prometheus and Covenant. All that's there to see, really, is the ship's journey, David being repaired, and then David showing his thanks buy murdering Elizabeth Shaw...and we pretty much got the gist of all that from the Covenant trailer and the film Covenant itself. As for having the aliens reach Earth, we've seen the 2-dimensional formulaic shoot-em'-up movie *that* leads to already. Remember? Not one, but 2 equally stupid AVP movies. The *last* thing I'd want is any more of that, yes even without the predator aliens. And I *certainly* would *never* buy into either Ripley or Hicks helping Weyland-Yutani to do that kind of thing! Only to destroy it. What I'd *really* like to see is a film that shows us a world totally dominated, not by the Engineers, but by the Xenos. A world in all its gothic Gigeresque glory. We've seen what those creatures can do with an atmosphere processing station. Imagine the Alienscapes we would be darkly treated to across the expanse of an entire planet!

There are millions of scripts floating around Hollywood. Probably thousands of good ones. I love ALIEN 1-3. Resurrection started the downward trend. We went off into comic book territory with Predator VS. Aliens, or Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy type territory. Alien is dead period. For fuck's sake... let Alien die. Make new stuff. Some will suck, some will be great. No more Alien, no more Michael Myers, Leatherface, Freddy, Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones. Your childhood is over. It's not coming back.

It is certainly a disappointment that we didn't get to see Neil's vision of the Alien sequel following in the footsteps of the original characters from Aliens. Maybe that might change in the future. Who knows? If the studio sees the potential for a hit film, they'd certainly be quick to jump on it. I think that what Ridley Scott brought about in the way of the prequels was pretty interesting and introduced a whole other dynamic to the story with the David and Walter characters. The engineers add an interesting element and tie the prequels into the real world mythos of the Annunaki (cleverly tapping the wallets and market of pseudo religious movie viewers). Its an interesting story and adds a lot to the whole Alien universe and gives us a few more films that come before the classic Alien. For the most part I've found that some of the prequels have been pretty good (especially Rogue One, Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Prometheus). There's still many classics that could benefit from this treatment as well. What about the movie Outland (a *High Noon* sci-fi movie)? What about Logan's Run? (a story that is certainly very relevant today). Look at West World and Future World (both created by legend Dr. Michael Crichton). A remake or prequel to Escape From New York? A remake, prequel or sequel of Big Trouble In Little China? Both by John Carpenter. There are so many places to go and so many directions that revive a lot of us forty somethings' nostalgia (I'm 49 and counting). For most people its about seeing their favorite characters in a story line that brings them back and connects them to the next generation without blatantly and so obviously "passing the torch" or cramping the creative style and ambition of the following generation (hint hint Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The next generation will get older too and the same thing will happen with them and they'll expect the next generation to make room for the characters they grew up with to find their closure. They'll add their own story to the fold and the narrative becomes more about the sense of family created by the story telling medium and the characters it brings to life which are essentially a metaphorical mirror of our society, our challenges, our fears, and our dreams considering that all started for humanity around campfires perhaps a hundred millennia ago. Im still dying to see Alien: Covenant (I didn't get to see it at the movies but am looking forward to it). I get this feeling that I'm really going to enjoy it. There's something about the cast that seems to really gel and despite the spoilers and rants I've heard about the movie, I'll wait and see it for myself. There's something about Katherine Waterston that is simply amazing and I'm quite interested to find out more about her performance of Daniels (seeing as she's rumored to be Ellen Ripley's Mother). She seems a very versatile Actress and she certainly has that incredible quality that has no description but that you know it when you experience it. Not to mention Michael Fassbender's performance as the Weyland-Yutani flagship Androids David and Walter seeing as he brings credibility to any character he performs. He could play the lead in a live action adaption of Gumby and most people would come away thinking they'd seen an adaption of a Shakespearean play. He'd probably get an Oscar for it too. :-P Alien and Aliens were my favorite movies of the Alien franchise for certain. So why not another sequel beyond Aliens?Blomkamp's vision might yet see the darkness of LV-426 and where ever else it was slated to take us. There's so many places to go...
@Barada73
@Barada73 7 жыл бұрын
The story that Ridley Scott is telling with these prequels is a story that didn't really need to be told, IMO. After one viewing of Alien, the question of what happened to the derelict ship and the space jockey pretty much writes itself: ancient aliens were attacked and wiped out by the xenomorphs and crash landed on LV-426 as a result. We didn't need a trilogy of prequel films to overcomplicate and convolute that simple story. I've been a fan of the Alien franchise since the 1980s and I have NEVER been interested in the origins of the space jockey or the derelict ship. Never. Now that it's been revealed that the space jockey is actually tied to the origins of human life, then that human life created androids, which in turn created the xenomorph... I'm even less interested in this story. I don't believe that Blomkamp's idea is completely dead, especially since Covenant seems to have flopped at the box office. I think Scott saying that Alien 5 is dead was just to keep from drawing attention away from his current movie. Similar to how George Lucas claimed that there were only ever going to be six Star Wars movies, when Episode 3 came out, while sitting on story treatments for Episodes 7-9.
