Blu ray is great. It has great video and the same audio as most 4k's. A blu ray even is more scratch resistant then a 4k disc and most of the time way cheaper. That said, i always buy the 4k with a blu ray included. Best of both worlds imo.

I only own 1 blu ray (the thing) all other 600 discs are dvd and couldn't be happier. Picked most up in thrift stores ridiculously cheap. As someone from the VHS era I've always found dvds more than acceptable

Thank you for this one Jamie. I just started collecting blu rays and affordable 4ks. I had a 4k tv since 2016 but never watched many blu rays in them until I got a 75” tv recently. Blu rays show and sound so good. I don’t make it a must have o get 4ks due to me trying to have the most fun spending not so much money all the time. Only time in getting 4ks is if they’re known to show way better than the blu rays I don’t have or if they’re on sale.

Blu ray rules! a big bang for your buck on many movies, patience is key there are always great deals 50-80% original prices. I accept streaming as a great service to some movie watchers but I'm not a big fan, it does not deliver the quality and extras etc. I like when enjoying a movies. thanks for the video!

Recently I feel more and more that I already have all the films I want to own. I bought about ten Blu-Rays in total in 2024. Mind you, I bought about 250 CDs. Music is more important to me than movies lately. As for prices, I'll pay top dollar for something I really want. There aren't many of those left. I have an ever-dwindling list of highly sought-after titles. These are in the category of "don't even look at the price, just buy when they become available". Elusive cult titles like The Wizard of Speed and Time, or Get Crazy, which finally came out in 2022. Obviously I'd rather they be cheaper, but I'd rather spend $50 for something I REALLY want than spend $5 on a film that's okay. Physical media is my only vice.

I think you are profoundly correct when you talk about the collecting of physical media being important due to the issues and sensibilities of modern society. Revisionist history and censorship is a terrible blight on the world. We deserve to know and experience the truth for what it is and what it was in different periods. It is why i jumped into collecting physical media myself. Also more often than not, the tampered versions of our entertainment is worse than the intended originals. Great job!

Sick of paying such high prices for 4K. I've moved back to blu-ray and find I really don't miss 4K for films that have a good blu-ray release. Saves me TONS of money!
@toggraham847814 күн бұрын
Some corrections Jamie. VHS would only be able to resolve around 240 vertical scan lines on a good quality player and a decent quality tape. Over the air analogue broadcast tv in Australia was around 330 scan lines so both a lot less than laserdisc, hiband video tape formats and DVD. The cheapest I’ve seen blurays at thrift stores in Melbourne is four dollars at pawn shops they are typically $5-$7. When they have too many some times you can get them a bit cheaper.

Jamie G'day from England/ uk. a top video, don't get me wrong. Wouldn't this 'good enough for most people' be better directed to DVD, since streaming is very popular and as I understand it DVD is similair. I go out of my way to avoid DVD, at the very least, PAL movies are very likely to sound wrong

I had a huge Blu-ray and DVD collection(granted still do, but less). I didn't jump on the 4K wagon right away. I was gifted a 4K player for a holiday when they first came out, bit had none, so started upgrading from there. My point is if that doesn't happen when it did I probably wouldn't have started upgrading as soon.

Since South Park for example is only available as DVDs (in nice box sets) here in germany, I bought them a few days ago. And even tho I enjoy watching them, Bluray would be a godsend there. Bluray honestly is enough to me, I dont need everything in 4K. Im also big into Full HD and QHD

Blue ray is my favorite format, I'll only get 4k if it comes with a blue ray of a film I can't find in blue ray alone, 4k makes me dizzy and the price is another turn off, otherwise its blue ray and DVD for me, DVD because it's cheap and still a lot of films not available past that format.

My biggest gripe with Blu-ray so to speak is studios putting TV series I love which are niche mostly only to DVD and not Blu-ray or even SD on Blu-ray so I can save shelf space and have it on a more durable scratch resistant disc.

I collect blu rays, because for me they are still the best format in relation to quality/price/contents inculded on a single disc. Yes 4K might got even an higher definition, but the contents inside are less (in many cases non existent) and most of the times the extra contents are on a separated standard blu ray inside the 4k blu ray case. Which is really kinda annoying. I bought the 4k blu ray, because I want the 4k definition, what should I even do with the blu ray? To check that 4K is better? And the extra blu ray included, is something which even increase the price of 4Ks and it's a problem. 2nd thing, for example if I've got the whole Mad Max Saga on Blu Ray, why should I buy Furiosa on 4K? When it looks perfect on blu ray and the extra contents are on the blu ray. Even for a little question of linearity on the shelfs, you don't want a black case, in middle of a lot of blues. 3rd thing I think at this point, blu ray as a format, is kinda unbeatable as I said in terms of quality/price and contents inside most of them. Another thing most of the people buys things once and that's it. Upgrading is kinda pain in the ass. Because at that point what was the point of buying it in the first place? As the most important reason to buy a physical copy of something, is preservation. Blu Rays preserves the best in this case. Nice video 👌🏻

I mostly buy my movies (or TV shows) on Blu-ray, but I still do sometimes buy DVDs, since many TV-shows are only available to buy in that format. I do not really want to buy shows digitally. But I do also watch some stuff from Netflix, like for example, Korean dramas.

I love Blu-ray.. I still have a 22 inch 1080p monitor and a 42 inch 1080p Plasma TV and in a way I refuse 4k and HDR, because everything works just fine. However I have a 4k player and one 4k disc (Van Helsing). If a movie gets only remastered on 4k I can still watch it because 4k is backward compatible. I did a lot of testing and comparing the Blu-ray vs the remastered 4k version and yes there are differences. It is basically a new version. They changed black levels, colors, etc.. but they could have done all of this on normal Blu-ray too. But many remastered versions only get 4k releases. There are dedicated KZbin Channels out there that test 4k and Blu-ray releases and sometimes the Blu-ray gets the remastered version too and can sometimes look even better..

I think it depends on how you consume the content . A lot if not most of the movies being released today. The Atmos audio is locked to a 4k disc. There are some Blu-ray that have Atmos but nothing like 4k. I have a dedicated space to watch my movies and when properly set up, 4k is worth every penny

Despite your argument Blu ray value vs Streaming value I personally do not believe the General Public is seeing it like you and the cost of living Crisis is Changing Spending Habits in many sectors eg the decline in fast Food take away sales. For my absolute favorite films such as John Carpenter's The Thing, The Lost Boys, Fright Night and The Fly, the Bluray is completely sufficient. For other titles that I also like but don't necessarily need to watch in HD, the DVD is more than sufficient and I'm not the only one who shares this view. The 4K UHD format is only for home cinema enthusiasts, nothing more and nothing less. I know it's hard for the hardcore 4K community to believe but most people are really only interested in the film and not which format has the higher resolution and better sound.

This is an extremely esoteric interest. Most people still don't even know or care what aspect ratios are, let alone even be able to tell when a film isn't presented in the correct one.

Blurays on OLED even LED compared to LCD with Deep Color and Full Range RGB is so different from what we knew back then 4K discs that are BD-100 do not play on One X/S, Series X and PS5, ridiculous. It looks barely different anyway and the best version of the LOTR extended trilogy is the Bluray one NEVER buy a 4K copy that does not have the regular Bluray version included Keep your PS3s too, they do 3D Blurays as well and can be region unlocked once it goes under custom firmware
