The gaskets are the weak point, and labor the same, regardless. What a pain, upgraded gaskets, better rubber/silicon, should come from the factory.

Also, plastic does stop the heat, it slows it. Thermal Conductivity is lower, but it will reach the same equilibrium... and in fact the aluminum should respond to cooling and heating better, the question is what did the engineers assume when they designed flow.... plastic of course.

I didn’t have any cracks on my plastic oil housing but had a nice oil buildup at the bottom of the filter as you described on yours. I had 165k miles before it went

Just finished doing this job myself on my 2017 m240i with 120k miles. I did use the whole housing and oil cooler that it came with so we’ll see how it goes, I also upgraded the coolant fitting to the left of the housing because that is also a common failure point due to (you guessed it, plastic piece)
@ericocampo702810 ай бұрын
Another great video sir. I guess were now waiting for owners to start hitting higher mileage to determine how widespread of a problem this can be. Given this looks like more of a BMW design issue rather than plastic usage one, do you think that overall, the B58 is still a highly reliable engine? Things like tracking the car would accelerate the failure of the OFHG?
@basicsay290910 ай бұрын
I think as a whole the b58 is still a very reliable engine, but like most bmw tubo i6 engines, all the plastic around it just starts to get old and brittle. I definitely would say its a plastic usage issue, especially because bmw engines run warmer than other engines

My M440i started leaking coolant and I believe its this oil housing BMW design failure. Thank you for your videos on the help to replace it. Seems like a large job but wow BMW engineers need stop using so much freaking plastic specially with such tight engine compartments with all the heat. Wish me luck with the replacement. Thanks again
@roy43595 ай бұрын
I don't want to defend these engineers but i think it could be precisely because of such tight engine compartments that they used plastic. too much heat dissipation would be good for the part itself but maybe not for all the electronics around it. I don't know.
@ExtremDIY5 ай бұрын
@@roy4359 I picked up the aluminum oil housing aftermarket BMW wanted $600 and also replacing the coolant fitting next to it that suppose to go bad all the time. At BMW they told me the heat issue with the plastics in the south Florida is way more common than upper states. They dont sell as much up there he told me. For the coolant fitting coming out of the engine they sell 2 to 3 per day he told me of how bad they leak. There are so many hoses it ridiculous. If BMW is going to use plastic make it a bit thicker.

Looks like Rein has started marketing an aluminum housing for the b46/48 engine. Not sure if it’s better quality than the ones coming directly out of China. Probably a good chance for a b58 version to come out in the future. (Edit: according to FCP Euro, these ones are made in turkey)

Hi kern, I just bought an m140i and I have error codes 120308 120408 (air pressure) and 180001 catalyst performance too low. The car had a powertrain problem warning light on the dashboard. I just bought it and it takes 10 seconds to get up to 60MPH. However, the engine runs well, no audible air leaks, no smoke from the exhaust, no excess consumption. No oil leaks, no unstable rpm idling. The only thing is that by sending a pressure setpoint of 2 bars (load test) the sensor only measured 1 bar. We manage to activate the wastegate on the computer. Do you have a little idea? BMW suggests that we change the plastic hose which is just after the MAF flow meter which goes to the turbo because it is not waterproof. However, we exchanged it for 30 minutes with that of a friend and no difference. Thank you so much

There is a common issue with b58's where the coolant cap will be causing an issue with coolant getting through and evaporating over time. Look for some white dust looking stuff inside and where the cap goes, this will be an indicator that you need to replace the cap. Look it up yourself as well. Cheers!

Aluminum, Aluminium, doesn't matter which way you spell it or pronounce it, the guy who coined the word first called it aluminum: English chemist Sir Humphry Davy named the metal, deriving the name from the mineral called alumina. This name was taken from the French, who had based it on alum, a white mineral that had been used since ancient times for dyeing and tanning. The only reason it's different now is because all the dictionaries were made by the Britain's and they couldn't even figure out which way to spell it. So we had like 4 different dictionaries all saying different things for the same word.
