Horizontal stress is twice the circumferential stress.So the shell must not be weakened more than necessary along longitudinal axis we keep longitudinal axis as minor and circumferential axis as major

Can you take out a circular door from another circular hole? Its very hectic since they will stuck, Even though some of manhole doors are Circular but mostly are Elliptical in Shape. Agreed, But consider the minor axis of manhole door to be parallel to Longitudinal axis if boiler since Longitudinal seam being twice that acting upon the circumferential seam. Hence the boiler shell must not be made weakened along Longitudinal axis..so we have put minimum or minor axis along Longitudinal axis.. Remember the values of both hoop stress and Longitudinal stress. Do not get confused by only hoop stress or P=F/A.
