The problem in the industry nowadays they no female characters are written which can connect or impress wider audience. Even female oriented movies are urban based multiplex kind of movies ex- Dear Zindagi, Thappad, Mardani, Haseen Dilruba, Pink, Queen, Tanu weds Manu I don't say they are bad films but these movies are restricted to city audience. Heroines are not getting characters like Madhuri Dixit (Beta, Dil, Hum Apke hai koun), Karishma Kapoor(Raja hindustani), Sridevi(Nagina, Chalbaaz, Mr India), Vyjayantimala(Madhumati, Sangam, Ganga Jamuna, Sadhana) which can male centric films but has strong female characters which can connect to larger section of audience from North to south, east to west.

Your analysis is wrong, first of all male stars are dominating since 1940's even before madhumati, mother india released Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor were already superstars. No one refused Nargis dutt to be tagged SUPERSTAR she left industry after marrying Sunil Dutt. During 50's There was Meena Kumari whose films use to run because of her stardom she did movies like Sharda, Miss Mary, Phool aur Pathar, Parineeta, Pakeezah where she completely overshadowed male stars. Before Sridevi, They heroines like Meena Kumari, Vyjayantimala, Hema Malini, Mumtaz who were immensely popular as Male stars and Sridevi also did typical heroine roles in her entire career with exceptions like Nagina, Mr India, Chandni, Chalbaaz why are you elevating her??

But admin may be wanted to tell that sridevi was first female superstar, because superstar status is something else. Just like rajesh khanna is called first superstar, doesn't mean that were no actors before him who did impactful roles, definately there were actors but superstar status was earned by rajesh khanna.
