I just rescued a border collie mix that's about 8 months old. She's about 10 lbs under weight and after just a couple days with a full belly and being able to sleep instead of scavenge, she's like a jet doing aerobatics after the pilot shoved some crack in the fuel tank and sent the plane on its way without him. I didn't know what she was when she came up begging for food other than she was skinny, not aggressive, and sweet personality. A friend texts back that she looks like a border collie mixed. After some research, I realized that I may have made a mistake. Gonna need a longer leash. 2 leaps and she's at the end of 16'. I believe the bouncing 4' in the air. She likes to hunt crickets and spiders on walks and will jump, turn 180 in the air, and pounce on the thing. Her normal trot is a hard run for me. This is with her being malnourished! Watching this video has me a tad intimidated about a fully healthy version of her. Fortunately, she doesn't pull on the leash walking unless she wants to investigate something while on free or explore walk and only enough to let me know she wants to go that way. If I don't give in, she returns and sits and we start walking again.

@@Texas240how's that going? Have you realised your fences are a waste of time and effort yet? We had a male one that lived until it was seventeen. After the local dog catchers inspected our fence after repeatedly catching him, found it to be flawless, then watched him get out a few minutes later, they were good enough to stop making us be regular donors and just quietly pop in back in our yard when they caught him. Didn't hurt that the little bugger charmed them when they came in.
@oscillis28 күн бұрын
@@bobs_toys Have you realized yet that the issue was you and not the fence? :) If you don't have the time to take them out on a leash and exercise with them enough to where you don't abandon them outside for long periods of time with "a wasteful fence", you should not have had a border collie. You neglected him and ALLOWED him to escape and possibly get into serious harm. You knew that fences didn't work yet you still kept him outside without a leash. Then never bothered to fix the issues, and it feels like you didn't even care when he escaped. Sounds like pure neglect. Almost as worse as those cat owners that have ""outdoor cats"". You are just abandoning your pet to face the wild and unpredictable nature of other animals and humans.

I would commend the Husky owner, because this kind of obedience training goes completely against what the Husky was trained to do - make independent decisions while pulling a sled on ice. The fact that he was obedient at all, is a huge accomplishment. Huskies are notoriously hard to train for obedience. They are semi wild dogs with strong natural instincts. Their job is to guide a sled thru snow and ice and decide which path to follow since the owner is 25 feet behind them in a dog sled pack. It is the lead husky who determines the route forward. The sled driver sits too far behind to see any cracks in the ice. So, bravo for the Husky Lobo!! The Husky is more stocky, has more stamina for winter conditions and a more robust muscular body to endure chilled conditions and pull loads. Border Collies by contrast, live to follow orders, as they are bred to work with human handlers to guide and corral livestock. They are super obedient, quick to follow orders and almost an extension of the human. Also, the body is flexible and nimble to make rapid turns and weave between animals or jump onto them. They don't pull loads, so don't need those heavier muscles. They run all day same as the Husky, so they have energy and stamina, but much more agility as we saw on the weaves. If you had a Border Collie pull a sled on the snow long distance, you would not get much performance out of them. Wrong dog for that. So beautiful to see each dog do its thing, what they were bred to do. Dogs are magnificent companions in every way.
@RobertMorgan Жыл бұрын
And a 'bridge' between those two would be something like a working dog, a GSD or Malinois, a mix between strong and heavy, and light/fast/agile. Obedience, but also a bit of independence. Hey, if the perfect dog for everything existed, there'd only be one breed of dog, that one lol.

They’re both literally based on the same event, which is the diphtheria outbreak that threatened to wipe out all the children in a Nome, Alaska. While Balto is very loosely based on it, Togo is more historically accurate. Though Balto was one of the sled dogs that drove the last leg of the race to Nome with the cure, Togo was the lead sled dog that took on the longest and most dangerous part of the journey with their trainer and owner, Leonhard Seppala, who credits Togo for saving them from life-threatening situations like ice that was literally cracking under their feet as they crossed frozen over waters to get to Nome in time.

Its a difference between breeds. Have any of you had a Border Collie? A bored Border Collie is a flat out nightmare, because believe it or not they are a LOT brighter than a Husky. Border Collies were bred to herd sheep in the Welsh/English Borders, hence the name. Rough terrain, sheep are actually pretty damned agile (they are descended from mountain sheep after all), you need a dog that is quick, agile and intelligent to herd sheep in those areas. Huskies are bred for endurance and a more or less 'placid' temperament, Border Collies are bred for speed, agility and intelligence. They need a stupendous amount of exercise a day, and regular challenges, or they simply get bored. And f you were to give me a choice between dealing with a bored Husky r a Bored Border Collie, I will go the Husky every time, its MUCH easier dealing with a bred husky than a bored border collie....

That's it. Lobo and his breed were designed to pull a sled in snow, and that's what they like best. A border collie, on the other hand, wants to be busy doing something, anything. When I was showing my Shetland sheepdog in obedience trials I was beaten way more by border collies than by huskies.

@@ralphschraven339 Rightly put. That’s why Northern breeds aren’t for the faint hearted. They’re the closest you’ll get to their wolf ancestors without being a wolfdog. They’re incredibly independent, challenging to train, high energy, high prey drive which unfortunately leads to these dogs ending up in shelters. I used to own a border collie. She was a rescue from a cattle farm and the owner of the farm would to beat/kick her because she would herd the cattle in the wrong direction. I saw what was happening and asked to take the dog, and the owner was very happy to give her away, in fact he was on the verge of "Taking her out back and shooting her" in his own words.. I named her Sugar because she was so sweet. She never stopped herding. Any time we would play fetch with other dogs, sugar would herd the dogs like her life depended on it. She would also try to herd my cats around the house, so the cats were not fond of sugar LOL. She was incredibly fast, but what struck me the most was her pure agility. She could not only run faster than all the other dogs, but also for significantly longer. Sugar passed away of old age last year, but she will forever live on in my heart, and always be a reminder of the magic of this breed.

I feel like this really shows how these dogs are bred for different things. Yes huskys are bred to run, but it’s running over a very long distance so it’s more about endurance rather than speed. Although yes I do agree, the sports merits of each breeds isnt what's being shown here. This video is much more a reflection on personality in my opinion
@lumindoesvideos3 жыл бұрын
Personality and what it was bred for are kinda on display. Huskies don't need to go super fast for what they were originally bred for, and they don't need the level of focus that the border collie needs. Border collies on the other hand are agile herding dogs that know how to concentrate when it's needed. In this kind of setting, they are in it to win it and they know they can if they try.
@rotor77263 жыл бұрын
Something to note is that border collies are actually expected to run all day like that (though they're definitely not pulling anything behind them)
@dr.angerous3 жыл бұрын
The reason behind this is just before his round begins, another dog owner show him treat in her hand and refuses to give him, he also went back there to check the treat again in the middle of the round and she used the paper to cover it up. It's actually not fair play.
@toomanyhobbies20112 жыл бұрын
BCs are bred to work sheep on their own over many miles and several days at a time. Endurance, agility and intelligence is what a BC is. Husky's are basically the same, but much stronger, and I don't think they act independently like a BC. Now, in agility I'm sure huskys can be competitive with BCs, I've just never seen one.

We had a collie that was mind-blowingly intelligent but really self-willed. Understood almost every word in a conversation but had selective hearing as the saying goes. Like pretending he didn't understand what "go and get your lead" meant because he didn't want to be on the lead, trotting happily acting like he didn't have a clue. So eventually realising the game i said (bluffing) to the family "he must not want to go for walkies today, let's go and sit back down again".... and suddenly he goes and gets his lead! 😂 He was always playing mind games, wanted to be in charge and do his own thing. Was still obedient enough most of the time though.

that Husky is more than capable of matching the Border Collie on pace. It just doesnt want to
@itstruethough6042 жыл бұрын
yeah, and that’s the point. that’s why competitions have winners and losers. most dogs are capable of being agile, but they aren’t interested enough on being obedient and whatever the people on the comments are using to feel better about themselves won’t change the fact disobedience in a dog is not considered a favorable trait. also, do remember breeds like the french bulldog exist and they can’t even fly planes because of their physical limitations. surely intelligence and obedience aren’t important for the people on the comments who raise dogs solely for company, but for people who breed dogs for company AND function, especially service dogs, obedience is just as important as physical prowess. blind people don’t have dogs just because they feel lonely, service dogs are their best option for functioning independently. a dog that is predisposed for disobedience is not going to make the disabled person’s life easier, but harder and more frustrating. the only scenario someone who needs a service dog would choose a husky over any herding breed is if they are on a wheelchair and want to be pulled… not a single person in this comment section has a sled and needs sled dogs, they just can’t cope with the fact their dog breed isn’t known for being useful nowadays. i much prefer the look of huskies and really wish they were the top most obedient breed, they’re cheaper where i live too. but i need a service animal, and there is no reason for me to pull the trigger and get a husky if my Collie is going to be a good companion and loves working. And they do love working.
@Пинагод2 жыл бұрын
@@itstruethough604 I'm glad someone pointed out how...against, they are for a dog that's clearly having fun and has been well-cared by their owner. Just because a dog looks obedient doesn't mean that's all to them - They're clearly following the instructions since it personally brings them joy, and I'm really pumped up seeing a dog do what it loves. And border collies in particular _should_ get this much exercise anyway, so this whole 'being obedient for the authority' is practically false. It's within their instinct to be this active, the owners just gave the dog the opportunity to have it.
